Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of sexual harassment cloaked in religious legitimacy through an analysis of the film Walid (2025), a cinematic work that critiques the abuse of religious authority. The background of cases of sexual violence in Lombok, especially in Islamic boarding schools and educational institutions, shows the existence of unequal power relations and a culture of silence that worsens the situation of victims. Walid’s film depicts charismatic religious leaders who manipulate sacred teachings to establish absolute power and commit symbolic and sexual violence. The main objectives of this study are to: (a) identify the forms of sexual harassment that are justified in the name of religion, (b) analyze the representation of religious power in films as social criticism, and (c) provide social reflections to encourage the reform of the protection system in the religious environment. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing the theories of Power and Symbolic Relations (Michel Foucault), Symbolic Violence (Pierre Bourdieu), and Feminist Critical Theology. The findings of the study show that Walid is not only a fictional representation, but also a reflective means that expose the oppressive power structures in religious institutions, as well as invite the public to build critical awareness, fight for justice for victims, and reject all forms of violence that take refuge behind religious symbols.

The findings indicate that there are six translation techniques. Among them, borrowing is dominantly used as a technique in translating the SL, with the highest use being 77 of 118 sentences that applied the technique. The interview results revealed that their main challenge in translating is preserving the intended meaning while adjusting for contextual and cultural variations and the lack of adequate knowledge about it.

Abstract

This research explores the portrayal of schizophrenia symptoms in the character Andrew Laeddis from the movie "Shutter Island". It examines how psychoanalysis and Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be applied to analyze his condition and coping mechanisms. The study aims to understand how Andrew deals with his schizophrenia and fulfils his needs as a person with a mental illness. The research adopts a psychological approach, using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method and content analysis techniques to analyze Andrew's character. The data for analysis and interpretation are derived from the film's script and related theories. The study combines qualitative methods and content analysis to provide a detailed portrayal of Andrew Laeddis' psychological makeup and character traits. The findings reveal that Andrew exhibits symptoms representing the three aspects of Freud's psychological structure: id, ego, and superego. The id is evident in his violent and impulsive behaviour driven by a desire for revenge. The ego is seen in his desire for control and mastery over his mind and body. The superego manifests as his respect for authority and social norms. Additionally, the analysis based on Maslow's theory shows that Andrew's behaviour reflects his struggle to fulfil his basic physiological needs and his higher-level needs for safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.

Abstract

The need for learning English as a foreign language is rising due to the interconnectedness of today's globe, where English is the universal language of academics, commerce, entertainment, and culture. This has raised interest in the automatic approach to evaluating spoken language competency. In this sense, learning grammar is one of the most important components of language competency. This study aims to analyze the grammatical speaking errors made by the second-year Universitas Bumigora students learning English as a foreign language in the Speaking 3 course. The methodology involves a qualitative research design using the surface strategy taxonomy to analyze and classify the data collected from 20 English literature students. The errors are categorized into omission, addition, disordering, and selection. The types of errors identified include plural and singular nouns, subject-verb agreement, part-of-speech word orders, regular and irregular verb usage, and word order. Data were obtained through two cycles; in the first cycle, the participants receive feedback on their errors, and their insight on the errors is also considered in cycle 2. Data analysis on both cycles reveals that there were significant errors in singular and plural pronoun usage of above 20%; the subject-verb agreement has an increasing percentage of errors (4.16%) after being given feedback on the first cycle; part of speech has significantly lower errors (8.03% and 1.09%); the usage of articles is similar to subject-verb agreement errors, there was slight increasing percentage of errors (1.8% and 0.20%). Thus, the data revealed that learners are significantly influenced by both the interference of their first language and the challenges inherent in acquiring a second language. Therefore, errors in spoken articulation still existed, though learners were able to comprehend the grammar in written text.

Abstract

The study's main purpose is to describe the types of adjective clauses. The method of this study was a descriptive qualitative method that focused on describing the types of adjective clauses. The method of data collection is by using the documentation method. The technique is collecting complex sentences that are found in the novel. There were some steps to do this analysis such as reading several textbooks and articles about English grammar, and seeking and learning information about adjective clauses, definitions, the types of adjective clauses, and then identifying and classifying the data of English adjective clauses in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Next, the data based on the types of adjective clauses were analyzed and then showed the frequency of types from each act of data in the novel, and finally drawing verification conclusions after finishing the analysis. King and Stanley (1996) describe that types of adjective clauses can be divided into four, they are full adjective clause, reduced adjective clause, marked adjective clause, and unmarked adjective clause. The result shows there were only two types of adjective clauses in the novel, 48 full adjective clauses equal to 98 percent, and 1 reduced adjective clause clauses equal to 2 percent. It is concluded that almost all types of adjective clauses are full adjective clauses in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. It means that the way the writer delivers conversation and narration on the text with full adjective clauses is to make it easier for readers to understand them.

Abstract

Collocations, or word co-occurrences, are typically studied based on written corpus data. In this paper, we used preliminary experimental data to explore the inherent association between a verb and certain nouns. We hypothesized that specific verbs would vary with respect to the nouns the verbs are associated with. To test this hypothesis, we developed an experiment using the Gorilla Experiment Builder to simulate the preference selection of nouns with each verb. The research was done with a sample size of 17 participants and each of them performed 35 trials inside the Gorilla software. The responses were compiled into a set of tables as the basis for generating bar plots, showing the frequency of nouns selected with each verb. The overall results show that the studied verbs have certain preferences towards specific nouns. Even though this research found initial support for the hypothesis, the findings are not conclusive due to the small sample size of participants, being far from the population size initially measured. We discuss a way to corroborate the findings using different methods.
