Abstract

Infections caused by bacteria continue to pose a significant public health challenge, especially in developing nations. The excessive and improper use of synthetic antibiotics has greatly contributed to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is currently responsible for around 1.27 million deaths each year. This situation highlights the urgent need for safer and more sustainable alternative therapies, including the use of plant-based antimicrobials. One promising option is the leaf of Cinnamomum burmannii, which is packed with various bioactive compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and phenols. These compounds demonstrate multiple antibacterial mechanisms, such as disrupting bacterial cell membranes, inhibiting the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins, inactivating enzymes, and interfering with energy metabolism. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts of Cinnamomum burmannii leaves possess moderate to strong antibacterial activity against pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella Typhi. Besides its efficacy, the use of Cinnamomum burmannii leaf extract is considered safer, more economical, and less likely to induce resistance. However, the application of this extract in clinical settings remains limited due to the lack of in vivo and clinical studies addressing its safety, toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. Additional research is essential to fully investigate the therapeutic potential of Cinnamomum burmannii leaf extract as an evidence-based alternative antibacterial agent.

Abstract

Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a global health issue with a high disease burden and limited therapeutic success rates. Limitations of conventional methods, such as bacterial culture and rapid molecular tests, include long examination duration, low sensitivity, and failure to detect minor infections that cause resistance. A literature review discusses a precision biomolecular approach through the integration of circulating free DNA (cfDNA)-based liquid biopsy, genetic mapping, and CRISPR-RNAi technology. Liquid biopsy may be able to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis and resistance noninvasively, rapidly, and can be used for real-time therapy monitoring. Genetic mapping analysis is enhanced by the identification of specific mutations, which can then be targeted by the CRISPR-RNAi system. CRISPR-RNAi technology plays a role not only in highly sensitive diagnosis but also as a therapeutic strategy that inactivates resistance genes without disrupting the normal microbiota. The integration of these three approaches offers a new paradigm in MDR-TB management that is precise, personalized, and efficient, with the potential to shorten treatment duration, increase therapy effectiveness, and reduce the risk of further resistance.

Abstract

University students are vulnerable to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. However, there is still limited research examining factors associated with mental health help-seeking among educated populations. This study aims to identify factors associated with the intention to seek mental health help among undergraduate students at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (FKM UI). This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design with quota sampling (n=108). The dependent variable was intention to seek help from mental health professionals, while the independent variables were attitudes toward help-seeking, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Univariate analysis showed the mean score for intention was 2.64 (SD=0.53). The mean scores for attitudes toward behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were 3.22 (SD = 0.47), 2.91 (SD = 0.4), and 2.88 (SD = 0.41), respectively. Spearman’s correlation test results showed that only perceived behavioral control was positively associated with help-seeking intention (p < 0.001), while attitudes and subjective norms were not associated with intention (p = 0.094 and p = 0.284). Based on these findings, health promotion efforts to improve mental health help-seeking among FKM UI undergraduate students should place greater emphasis on strengthening perceived behavioral control.
