Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the ripple vocal ornamentation technique in the "Ciawian" kepesinden composition as a manifestation of conventional vocal art in Sundanese gamelan music. Ripple vocal ornamentation is a unique sound decoration and is a distinctive characteristic that distinguishes the Sundanese vocal tradition from other cultural vocal systems. Research method: The research approach applied is a qualitative descriptive methodology with an ethnomusicological perspective, including direct observation, intensive dialogue with gamelan artists, and a study of audio-visual materials for the "Ciawian" kepesinden performance. Results and discussion: The study findings indicate that the ripple vocal ornamentation in the "Ciawian" composition displays a characteristic in the form of soft and directed sound vibrations, which act as melodic decoration to beautify musical expressions. This ornamentation is implemented in specific segments in the song structure, especially at the end of the melodic sentence and parts that require emotional accentuation. Mastering ripple ornamentation requires consistent practice and a deep appreciation of Sundanese musical aesthetics, coupled with the skill of controlling the breathing system and adequate vocal resonance. Implication: This research contributes to the efforts of documenting and conserving traditional Sundanese vocal ornamentation, especially in the realm of kepesinden which is an important element of Sundanese karawitan. The results of this study can be used as a reference for artists, art teachers, and academics who are interested in the development of traditional Indonesian vocal techniques.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to interpret the characteristics of scales and rhythmic patterns found in three rituals of the Rambu Solo’ ceremony, namely Ma’lambuk, Ma’marakka, and Ma’badong, into the musical composition “Sadness and Happiness.” The problem addressed is how each ritual forms its musical identity through tone structures and rhythms. Method: The method used is qualitative research with an interpretative approach. Data collection was conducted through observation of documentary videos, literature review, and audio analysis of musical elements from each ritual. The data were then verified and analyzed to identify rhythmic patterns, tone structure forms, and tempos, which were subsequently transformed into a combo mix format with a progressive rock genre. Result and Discussion: The results show that the Ma’lambuk ritual is dominated by complex polyrhythmic patterns utilizing phasing and tension and release techniques, performed improvisationally by several participants. Implication: The Ma’marakka ritual features a minor scale with an added raised third (III#) tone, accompanied by vocal and suling lembang improvisations that evoke a sorrowful lament. The Ma’badong ritual presents song lyrics in a simple minor scale with emphasis on the first (i) and second (ii) scale degrees.

Abstract

Purpose: This study analyzes the experiences of the independent band AidoAudio in utilizing the digital music distribution platform Believe Backstage. The purpose is to examine how digital accessibility and digital literacy affect the band's ability to manage releases, interpret analytics, and implement promotional strategies. This focus aims to uncover the challenges and opportunities faced by Indonesian independent musicians in the digital music ecosystem. Method: This study employs a qualitative method with an instrumental case study strategy. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with band members, supported by documentation including dashboard screenshots, official tutorials, and pitching forms. Data analysis used thematic coding to identify patterns related to accessibility and digital literacy. Triangulation and member checking ensured data credibility. Result and Discussion: The analysis shows that AidoAudio has strong operational-technical literacy, allowing smooth release uploads and compliance with metadata standards. However, interpretative and strategic literacy, including analytics use and editorial pitching, remains limited. Administrative barriers at the early access stage require attention but do not directly block platform use. The interplay between accessibility and literacy indicates that effective digital distribution depends not only on platform availability but also on the band’s internal capacity to build legitimacy, manage informal channels, and leverage social networks. Implication: This study highlights the importance of multidimensional digital literacy for independent musicians, emphasizing that access without literacy results in partial utilization, whereas literacy without formal access does not ensure effective distribution. The findings provide a model for optimizing digital music distribution strategies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the role of Griya Musika Sukawati Cressendo as a music education institution in building a local music arts ecosystem in Gianyar, Bali. Method: This research uses a qualitative research method with data collection through observation, interviews, and document studies. The results of the study show that Griya Musika Sukawati Cressendo has a significant role in the local music arts ecosystem in Gianyar. They not only provide quality music education, but are also active in developing the talents of local musicians, preserving traditional Balinese music, and creating a space of expression for musicians to work and collaborate. Result and Discussion: A SWOT analysis revealed that the institution's strengths lie in its comprehensive curriculum and qualified teaching staff. However, its weaknesses may lie in limited accessibility for underprivileged communities. Significant opportunities are seen in potential collaborations with the tourism industry and arts festivals in Bali, as well as the growing interest in music among the younger generation. Meanwhile, threats come from the globalization of music, which could shift preferences or the lack of clear career paths for graduates. Implication: The implications of this research emphasize that local music education institutions have great potential as a main pillar in the sustainability and revitalization of the arts and culture ecosystem, and provide strategic guidance for the development of similar models in other regions to balance cultural preservation with artistic innovation.

Abstract

Purpose: This article examines compositional strategies in the creation of a narrative program music based on Qur’anic texts, interpreted through the musical idiom of thrash metal and integrated with choral ensemble elements. The primary objective of this study is to explore how the Qur’anic narrative of the creation of the outer space and the earth can be musically interpreted through an extreme genre and an unconventional mixed ensemble structure. Method: A qualitative-interpretative methodology was employed, involving semantic and theological analysis of carefully curated verses. Result and Discussion: The compositional outcome demonstrate that the fusion of aggresive thrash metal vocals with the harmonic textures of choral voices effectively conveys both musical tension and the cosmological narrative of the Qur’an. Implication: The implications of this work point toward the emergence of new spaces in the discourse of religious and extreme music, while also serving as a deconstructive effort to challenge stigmas surrounding metal music.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of K-Pop music from a cultural studies perspective, particularly in relation to consumer culture among fans. In this context, K-Pop music is not only positioned as entertainment, but also as a form of cultural construction that influences the consumption patterns and lifestyles of fans. Method: This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through literature review, semi-structured interviews, and the distribution of questionnaires to active students who follow K-Pop developments. Literature data was obtained from academic journals, reference books, and relevant and credible sources to strengthen the analytical framework. This study applies triangulation techniques as a method of processing the data obtained. Result and Discussion: The study shows that support for K-Pop music is an initial representation of fans' emotional loyalty, which gradually develops into consumption patterns that are ingrained in their identity, such as purchasing products released by K-Pop idols and adopting a Korean lifestyle. These findings reveal that the consumerist culture within the K-Pop fan community is not limited to economic aspects but also reflects social and symbolic dynamics among teenagers and young adults, particularly K-Pop fan students. Implication: In the era of globalization, technology is a necessity, including the need for musical artists or musicians to realize their works. The realization of musical works can be done through recording and performance activities. MIDI, as a technological product, can be a solution for composers and musicians in creating musical works. MIDI can make the process of recording and performing musical works effective and efficient.

Abstract

Purpose:Balinese karawitan is a cultural heritage characterized by its intricate musical structures and profound philosophical meanings. However, its conventional composition process, transmitted orally and through direct interaction among musicians, faces limitations in documentation, experimentation, and efficiency. This study aims to explore the potential of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) as an alternative medium for composing Balinese karawitan, while also examining the opportunities and challenges that arise from integrating digital technology with gamelan traditions.Method:This research employs a qualitative approach using literature study. Data were collected from academic journals, conference proceedings, and books relevant to the use of DAWs in traditional music, particularly Balinese gamelan. The analysis focused on the role of DAWs in timbral experimentation, rhythmic visualization, digital documentation, remote collaboration, and hybrid innovations, and compared these aspects with conventional practices of karawitan composition.Result and Discussion:The findings indicate that DAWs offer significant potential as tools for creative experimentation, long-term digital archiving, and cross-cultural collaboration. They also enable hybrid innovations that merge traditional gamelan instruments with modern electronic elements, thereby expanding the artistic spectrum of Balinese karawitan. Nonetheless, challenges persist, including the limited authenticity of digital sound reproduction, cultural conservatism, unequal technological literacy among traditional musicians, and intellectual property issues regarding gamelan sampling. Therefore, DAWs should be regarded as complementary rather than substitutive to conventional methods, ensuring that Balinese karawitan maintains its cultural authenticity while adapting to the dynamics of modern music technology.
