Abstract

Politeness is essential in interaction to avoid conflict between the speaker and the hearer. This article describes politeness by students and lecturers in academic interaction at the Japanese Program in Undiksha. This study is qualitatively approached using pragmatics design. The data were collected using the technique of observation by listening, writing notes, and participating. The data was then, analyzed using an interactive model from Miles & Huberman. The data were classi?ed according to the face theory of Brown & Levinson i.e. strategy of positive politeness and ?rategy of negative politeness. Data analysis reveals positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies students use in academic interaction at the Japanese Program in Undiksha. Both methods contained a constituent such as code-mixing. The reason for using code mixing in speech between lecturer and students is not only from speech situation but most part because of politeness factor. Using code-mixing of the Indonesian language and Japanese, made the speaker comfortable speaking because the code-mixing can make the utterance still in polite mode and formal form.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the problems of kanji learning difficulties and how to overcome them at three private universities in Bandung, namely Universitas Nasional Pasim, Universitas Kristen Maranatha, and Universitas Komputer Indonesia involving 125 students. The method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive method by distributing questionnaires to students as a research instrument via Google Forms. Then the data is processed in the form of a percentage to find students' responses or perceptions of the difficulties in learning kanji and efforts to overcome them. From the results of the study, it was found that third-semester students of the Japanese Literature Study Program from three private universities in Bandung had difficulty mastering basic kanji. The difficulties experienced by students in sequence were difficulty in understanding the meaning of kanji, difficulty in writing kanji, difficulty in understanding the number of kanji strokes, difficulty in understanding bushu, and difficulty in reading kanji. To overcome these difficulties, students prefer to ask lecturers outside of class hours and use the internet to learn kanji. However, not many students learn kanji independently. Therefore, to improve students' ability to master kanji, the use of collaborative learning methods or project-based learning is required.

Abstract

This research, entitled “PTSD And Self Defense Mechanism In The Main Character Of Minato Kanae’s Novel ‘Shokuzai’” This novel tells the death tragedy of their friends, Emily, fifteen years ago. Emily's death and the threats by Emily's mother triggered trauma for the main characters. Their childhood wounds before the incident also exacerbated their PTSD symptoms. Purpose of this research is to identify the symptoms of PTSD in the five main characters Akiko, Sae, Maki, Yuka, and Asako, and to explore the self defense mechanisms they use to cope with their trauma. The method used is descriptive analysis with a literary psychology approach. The theories underlying this research are Freud's self defense mechanism theory and the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). The first analysis showed that the five characters experienced 5 common symptoms of PTSD in DSM-5; traumatic events, intrusive symptoms, avoidance, negative cognitions and mood changes, and hyperarousal. The second analysis revealed that each character applied self defense mechanisms to avoid and cope with trauma. Akiko used three mechanisms, meanwhile the other four characters use four mechanisms. This research reveals that the complexity of psychological issues has varied and significant impacts on an individual’s condition.

Abstract

This study, titled "Disaster Management of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in Picture Books," aims to explore how disaster management and its impacts during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami are represented in picture books (ehon). The research uses a literature study to gather data from ehon and a descriptive analysis to interpret it, presented narratively. It draws on Wellek and Warren's literary sociology, Danesi’s semiotics (2010), and the Japanese Cabinet Office’s Disaster Management Report (2021). The study finds that Japanese disaster management includes three phases: (1) mitigation (pre-disaster) with education and preparedness, (2) response (during disaster) with emergency actions, and (3) recovery (post-disaster) with rehabilitation and reconstruction. These are depicted in the ehon’s narratives and illustrations, though not all books cover every phase. Positive impacts include successful evacuations, survival post-disaster, and restoration of life, while negative impacts include family separation and school relocations.

Abstract

A communication is formed from various utterances consisting of various meaningful sentences. When communicating, a person says an utterance that pragmatically will bring meaning not only lexically, grammatically, but also contextually. The utterance that is expressed contains a certain intention of the speaker so that it is called a speech act, and a speech act that performs the speaker's intention is called a performative speech act. Performative speech acts can be marked by the presence of performative verbs explicitly, or not marked by performative verbs, but in context can be understood as performative speech implicitly. The type of performative verb used is also adjusted to the purpose of the speech, which can be declarative, representative, directive, expressive, or commissive. This research discusses this, with data taken from Japanese children's stories, to find out the types of performative speech that often appear in Japanese children's stories, and the types of performative verbs that are often used. The theory used in this research is pragmatics theory, with descriptive qualitative research method, literature study research technique, which then the data is studied with distributional method and element sorting technique. The results of this study show that implicit performative speech acts are more common than explicit performative speech acts in Japanese children's stories. Furthermore, the implicit performative.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the different nuances produced in characters who use roujingo??? in anime and describe the differences between the use of roujingo??? in anime and reality. Japanese has a standardized language variety called hyoujungo???. Within hyoujungo???, there is another language variety called yakuwarigo??? which means role language. Kinsui (2017) divides yakuwarigo???into 6 types. The researcher is interested in examining one type of ???yakuwarigo based on the age of the language user, namely rounen??or roujingo???or the language of seniors. roujingo???is the language used by characters who are depicted with moustaches white hair and old faces. This research method is descriptive qualitative, which is research conducted to determine the value of independent variables, either one or more variables (independent) without making comparisons or connecting with other variables. The descriptive qualitative research method is used in this study to describe the existing facts of the use of roujingo in anime. The research data was taken from 8 anime published in the period 2000-2022. The data was analyzed by looking at the use of roujingo??? from anime characters with different social statuses. The conclusion of this study is that the author found two different functions of using roujingo??? . First, as a marker of parental nuance. Second, as a marker of grandeur and power, indicating high social status and power. Another finding of this study is that roujingo ??? is not used by old people suddenly. Japanese people do not change their language to that of their parents when they reach old age. Instead, the use of roujingo??? is limited to works such as anime and manga, used to portray old, regal, and powerful roles.
