Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of WebQuest-based writing learning on academic writing skills and critical thinking skills. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental method involving 250 high school students in grades 10–12. Participants were divided into two groups using random sampling techniques, namely the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received WebQuest-based writing instruction, while the control group received face-to-face classes. The instruments used were a critical thinking measurement scale to measure critical thinking skills and an academic writing skills assessment form. Data analysis used MANOVA and MANCOVA tests. The results showed that WebQuest-based writing learning was more effective in improving academic writing skills and critical thinking skills compared to traditional face-to-face writing learning. The improvement in academic writing skills showed significant improvements in all aspects, namely task achievement, cohesion and coherence, lexical accuracy, and grammatical accuracy. This improvement occurred because the WebQuest-based learning structure pattern was able to hone higher-order thinking skills, which included the introduction stage, task components, process components, conclusions, and evaluation components. Several aspects of critical thinking skills that showed significant improvement were analysis, evaluation, and deductive reasoning. However, inference and inductive reasoning skills showed less significant improvement. This is due to the deductive-inductive nature of online teaching. Therefore, WebQuest-based writing learning can improve writing and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse and compare the adaptation style in films, Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet!  and Dilan 1990. A qualitative method with a comparative descriptive approach is used. Data were collected through literature studies and audiovisual analysis, then analysed with a focus on adaptation strategies, visual styles, and production orientation. The result, Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet! Applying an interpretive-expressive style that transforms fragmentary texts into cinematic explorations based on social and psychological criticism. In contrast, Dilan 1990 uses direct transposition with high fidelity to the source novel to meet the expectations of a mass audience. In conclusion, the choice of adaptation style is a complex decision determined by the characteristics of the literary text, the production objectives, and the target audience.

Abstract

This study explores the forms of language and mechanisms of symbolic violence against Indonesian female politicians on social media. It employs a qualitative approach with a critical linguistics framework by analyzing Instagram comments on the accounts of Puan Maharani, Zita Anjani, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, and Mulan Jameela. Data were collected through documentation, observation, and note-taking techniques and analyzed from Bourdieu’s perspective. The findings reveal that symbolic violence manifests in three main forms: negative labeling, sexist language, and degrading or dismissive expressions. These practices operate through euphemization and censorship, which normalize violence within public discourse. The study highlights that language on social media functions as an instrument of power that perpetuates patriarchal dominance, undermines women’s professional legitimacy, and potentially hinders their political participation.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to map the characteristics of task-based language teaching (TBLT) design, the patterns of interaction it facilitates, its contribution to language learning improvement, and the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. The research employed a systematic literature review method with the PRISMA protocol, a mixed-method convergent integrated review design, and narrative-thematic synthesis of 16 empirical articles selected from Scopus, ERIC, and ScienceDirect. The results indicate that effective TBLT design is characterised by meaning-oriented tasks, collaborative work, authentic topics, teacher scaffolding, multimodal resources, and proportional integration of technology. The most dominant interaction pattern is learner–learner, while improvement in language learning appears in the linguistic, communicative, and affective domains. It is concluded that the success of TBLT is determined more by the quality

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of digital Project-Based Learning on students’ skills in writing anecdotal texts and to analyze the mediating role of digital literacy and critical thinking among high school students. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest control group model. Data were collected through writing tests, a digital literacy questionnaire, and a critical thinking instrument. Data analysis was conducted using comparative tests to compare learning outcomes between the experimental and control groups, as well as hierarchical multiple regression analysis to test the mediation model. The results of the study indicate that Digital PjBL is effective in improving anecdotal text-writing skills compared with conventional learning. Digital literacy and critical thinking act as partial mediators explaining how this learning model influences the quality of students’ writing. Theoretically, this study contributes by offering a mediation model that integrates digital learning environments with higher-order thinking processes in writing instruction. In practice, the findings of this study imply the need for the explicit integration of digital literacy and critical thinking into project-based learning designs to make writing instruction more effective and meaningful.

Abstract

The Brothers Grimm's Cinderella is a world classic that contains gender bias and patriarchal ideology, which require critical examination. This study aimed to analyse the narrative structure of Cinderella through Gérard Genette's narratological theory and to formulate a critical adaptation model based on Jack Zipes' framework. The study employed a qualitative approach using Genette's narratological theoretical framework, consisting of five categories: order, duration, frequency, mood, and voice. The data analysis consisted of five stages: narrative mapping, structural analysis, ideological critique, critical adaptation, and pedagogical interpretation. The results suggest that the narrative features a progressive, linear plot and minimal temporal distortion, dynamic duration variation, diverse narrative frequencies, a didactic mood with dominant external focalization, and a heterodiegetic voice that emphasizes the moral and structural functions of the story. Comparatively, the Grimm's version presents passive characters, while the critical adaptation reconstructs active female agency, equal relationships, and the elimination of symbolic violence. The conclusion confirms that integrating the two approaches yields a transformative model for developing reading materials grounded in critical literacy and gender equality.

Abstract

This study analyzes the short story “Cerita Calon Koruptor” by Galang Gelar Taqwallah as a literary diagnosis of the social pathology of corruption in Indonesia. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a sociological literary approach. The primary data is the text of the short story “Cerita Calon Koruptor,” included in the anthology Merah pada Melati, while the secondary data consists of relevant literature. The analysis technique used is close reading across three stages: text reading, coding, and interpretation. This study found three main findings: corruption is depicted as an aspiration that is inherited and normalized across generations; the crisis of honesty is manifested through moral inversion and horizontal political brutality; and rationalization functions as a psychological mechanism that perpetuates the cycle of corruption. These findings underscore the importance of integrating the social pathology framework, which has been more widely used in sociological studies, into Indonesian literary studies as a more comprehensive analytical perspective compared to partial satirical or sociological approaches, and highlight the potential of short stories on corruption as teaching materials to build critical awareness of the normalization of corrupt values.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of screen inferiority on students' effective reading rate (KEM) through a between-subjects experimental design involving 80 students. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, Welch’s t-test with Cohen's d effect size, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression to assess differences, relationships, and the unique contributions of motivation, metacognition, and cognitive load to KEM. The results showed that the paper-media group achieved a mean KEM of 174.51 words per minute, while the digital-media group obtained 154.20 words per minute with an effect size of Cohen's d = 0.267. Intrinsic reading motivation and metacognitive strategy were significantly positively correlated with KEM in both conditions, whereas extraneous cognitive load was negatively correlated, particularly in the digital-media condition. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that motivation and metacognition explained 18.3% of the variance in KEM beyond the influence of media type. These findings indicate that the screen inferiority effect is moderated by individuals’ metacognitive capacity and intrinsic motivation, rather than uniformly affecting all readers.

Abstract

Thisstudy investigated the impact of a GenAI-synthesia-based guided reading model and cultural content on students' reading ability, motivation, and perspectives. The research method used in this study was a quasi-experiment involving 200 high school students. The instruments used included textual and inferential reading assessments, a reading motivation assessment scale, texts containing local cultural content, and GenAI-Synthesia. This study also collected qualitative data through interviews with several participants. Data analysis used descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, chi-square tests, and qualitative analysis of interview results. The research findings indicate that the GenAI-synthesia-based guided reading model can improve reading ability, motivation, and positive perspectives. The integration of cognitive and practical activities in supporting reading skills contributes significantly to reading competence. Positive perspectives on the intervention were evident in its role in enriching cultural knowledge, encouraging the sharing of understanding and experiences, and improving life skills in the community. This study suggests that integrating technology with texts containing local cultural content can significantly improve reading ability.
