Abstract

Pronunciation has regained its existence in the investigative attempts in the areas of TESOL, Sociolinguistics, and Intercultural Communication. This burgeoning growth has proven the importance of pronunciation teaching and learning, notable in this technology-based language learning era. However, little attention has been given to the description of how the participant learned English pronunciation through internet-based video lessons (IBVL). Hence, this study addressed the void. Avril (a senior high school student in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia) was recruited as the investigative participant. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed with Thematic Analysis. The findings reported that she learned English pronunciation by imitating the English tutor of the MmmEnglish channel. Abstract

The path to be an educator can be filled with difficulties, particularly for pre-service teachers enrolled in programs such as Asistensi Mengajar. The Asistensi Mengajar program, as a first step toward a teaching career, is critical in preparing undergraduate students from the Faculty of Teaching and Training for the demands and rigors of the educational landscape. This journey, however, is not without its challenges. Additionally, comprehensive studies investigating the challenges encountered by EFL pre-service teachers during the program are limited, considering the relatively new modifications implemented within the segment of the curriculum. These changes reflect broader trends in teacher education, which place a greater emphasis on practical experience, mentorship, and classroom management skills development. The result shows that there are four major area of the problems: 1) writing lesson plan 2) classroom management 3) preparedness and anxiety 4) positive working relationship with mentor teachers and peers. These challenges developed since they did not have much experience and teaching time as they were beginners. The results highlight the need for continual support, mentorship, and training to address these challenges and better prepare for the demands of the teaching profession. Additionally, to guarantee the comprehensive development of teaching abilities and competencies, a more comprehensive provisioning phase is required. Educational institutions and stakeholders should work to establish a supportive learning environment that fosters the growth and development of future educators.

The data collection revealed that the highest score was 78 and the lowest was 63. Out of the 25 pupils, 15 scored above 68, with an average score 68.6. Good curriculum alignment has been found to have a positive effect on exam scores. The majority of students’ assessed that the material taught was appropriate to the exam format and helped them understand the concept being tested. Abstract

Language variation defined as a language use according the users, which differs based on the topic being discussed, the relationship between the speaker, the interlocutor, as well as the media of communication. This research focus on language variation used by the EFL students on social media. This research aimed to investigate the variation of language on social media specifically on Instagram and Facebook used by the EFL students. The design of this research was a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection was gained from observation, and documentation. The validity of the data used in this study was triangulation of sources, methods, and theory. The data analysis was gained by using Miles and Huberman theories. The result showed that there are some language variation used by the students on social media in term of dialect, colloquial language, gender, code, slang, code switching, and code mixing. The students are commonly applying a variety of unexpected language variations in the forms of acronyms, familiar phrases, and the use of local languages (sumbawanese) combined with the national language, English, even Arabic. Some might use English creatively, while others may struggle with grammar or vocabulary, leading to unique forms of expression that blend their English skills with local linguistic patterns. In addition, the EFL students use a wide range of languages on social media platforms especially Facebook and Instagram. Thus, the occurrence of language diversity is not only caused by non homogeneous speakers but also caused by the wide range of social interactions the speaker engage in.

Abstract

A key component of learning a language is listening, which is necessary for the growth of receptive and productive language skills. Extensive Listening (EL), which involves engaging with a wide range of audio materials in the target language, has emerged as a significant pedagogical tool for enhancing listening skills. This study investigates the effectiveness of EL in improving language proficiency through a 13-week program involving three undergraduate students in an English language course. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study explores students' perceptions of the benefits, challenges, and overall impact of EL on their English language skills. The findings indicate that students perceive EL as beneficial for vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and listening comprehension. However, challenges such as difficulties in finding relevant content and understanding diverse accents were also identified. The study provides valuable insights into optimizing EL programs, emphasizing the need for curated content and structured syllabi to better support learners. These results contribute to the existing literature on EL by highlighting its role in language learning and offering practical recommendations for educators to enhance instructional practices. The study underscores the importance of fostering an effective learning environment tailored to the needs and preferences of language learners. Future research is suggested to see the influence of various listening materials, the effectiveness of certain techniques, and to examine the long-term impact of EL across a broader learner demographic to further validate its effectiveness as a language acquisition tool.
