Abstract

Perception and attitude are linked with each other to influence second language learning. In local ESL context, perception and attitude of learners towards learning English language are heavily depending on their environment, economic status and experience.  The new National Education Blueprint (2013-2025) has outlined five system aspirations in achieving 50% of reduction in achievement gaps that include urban-rural, socioeconomic and gender. This calls for immediate attention to students from low economic status in effort to close the achievement gap and improve the teaching-learning strategies to cater their specific needs. This preliminary study investigates the underprivileged students from orphanages in the area of Selangor, Malaysia. A total of 30 respondents aged between 13 to 17 years old took part in this study. Data was collected via a questionnaire survey and interviews and was analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings suggest that students have positive attitude in ESL learning and they were aware of its importance. However, their interests in ESL learning are limited due to poor access of resources. Hence, these students have little opportunities to learn the language. Some recommendations are made for future policy and practice.

This led to the inception of the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) smartphone device. The purpose of this study therefore was to determine the right instrument to measure the FoMO smartphone by analyzing response points obtained from respondents. The study sample consisted of three groups of test subjects, from large city, small town and villages with n values of 226, 248, and 55 respectively. The data in this study were obtained using the 5-point Likert scale politomy data from a Fear of Missing out scale instrument, distributed online. The research data were analyzed using the Rasch model by testing rating scale analysis through Threshold. The results showed that the rating scale answered choices turned into a 3-point Likert scale with those not right, less right, and very right.

This study use a single subject design with multiple baseline across subject models. The subjects of this study are eight (8) high school students in 10th grade. The data collection instruments in this study are the recording frequency of career exploration (sub components narrowing choices, specifies a vocational choice, and deciding an action implementation), career exploration skill instruments, and treatment instruments in the form of career guidance group guidebooks. The results shows that mind-mapping can be implemented to enhance the students career exploration skill, that is the all subjects’ first sub component exploration skills (narrowing choices) in group data shows average baseline 13.27 increased to 30.86; the second sub component (specifies a vocational choice) shows average baseline 9.67 increased to 22.18; and the third sub component (deciding an action implementation) shows average baseline 13.42 increased to 20.26. Abstract

Self-preparation in dealing with physical changes is a necessity for young women, and lack of preparation will lead to several problems such as; anxiety, fear, timidity, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, and disruption of adult development. Self-preparation can be improved through information services provided by counselors using appropriate media and materials. The ADDIE model was used in this research and six experts were employed as subjects to validate service guidelines based on the display of laid down principles. Three counselors were on standby to test the use of the guidelines, and a total of thirty students were tested. The descriptive and inferential analysis with the Kendall coefficient (W) test were used to perform the examination. Therefore the result of the study shows that the prototype information service module can be used to prepare young women for physical changes during puberty.
