Abstract

This study analyzes the passage of John 4:1–42 to explore how Christ transcends social, cultural, and religious boundaries through his encounter with the Samaritan woman. The phenomenon of exclusivity in the lives of believers that hinders the church's mission is the main background of this study. Using qualitative theological methods with exegetical and narrative hermeneutic approaches, the study aims to uncover the theological meaning of Christ's inclusive actions and their relevance for contemporary cross-cultural ministry. The results show that Jesus' interactions are a theological statement of God's transcendent and universal love, which transcends ethnic, gender, and doctrinal barriers. The novelty of this study lies in the interpretation of Christ as the "Reaper of Souls" who presents a pattern of transformative ministry for a pluralistic world. It concludes that the church is called to abandon social prejudice and become an open missionary community to realize the mission of salvation for all people.

Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the concept of salvation in the light of contemporary theology and relate it to the pastoral practice of the church today. The concept of salvation, which has often been understood in an individualistic and eschatological manner, has now been revised to be more inclusive, contextual, and transformative. Using a literature study method and a descriptive-analytical approach, this article reviews the development of the understanding of salvation from time to time, as well as its impact on pastoral thought patterns and actions. It is emphasized that salvation is not only a spiritual gift from God, but also a process that changes personal and social life. Therefore, the church needs to develop a pastoral practice that is adaptive, empathetic, and relevant in facing the challenges of the times. The emphasis on the aspects of forgiveness, repentance, justification, and peace is the foundation of service that touches all dimensions of the congregation's life.

Abstract

The integration of Christian religious education in efforts to address the mental health crisis faced by Generation Z in Indonesia is very important, with a focus on its contribution to realizing the Golden Indonesia 2045. Generation Z, born in the digital era, is exposed to significant mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation, which are further exacerbated by social pressures and digitalization. In this context, Christian religious education can serve as a vital source of moral and spiritual support in building mental resilience. Through Christian teachings that emphasize love, forgiveness, and hope, Generation Z can gain a strong foundation in facing various life challenges. This article adopts a qualitative approach, analyzing literature and the practice of Christian religious education in Indonesia to examine its impact on the mental health of adolescents. It was found that the integration of Christian religious education into the education system can have a positive impact on mental health by introducing values that encourage self-awareness, emotional control, and healthy social skills. In addition, Christian teachings can also facilitate the process of mental healing by fostering a more optimistic worldview based on strong beliefs. This article proposes that by more broadly integrating Christian religious education into the national education curriculum, Indonesia can create a Generation Z that is more resilient mentally, socially, and spiritually, and ready to welcome the Golden Indonesia 2045 as a highly competitive and noble-charactered nation.

Abstract

Pastoral ministry to the poor is a biblical mandate that continues consistently from the Old Testament to the New Testament and remains relevant to the mission of the church today. However, in GBI SSS Jember there exists a significant gap between theological understanding and the practical implementation of pastoral ministry toward the poor. Conceptually, the church acknowledges God’s love and concern for the poor, yet practically this ministry has not been well-integrated theologically nor prioritized in church practice. This study aims to establish a solid theological foundation for pastoral ministry to the poor so that the church may serve holistically—addressing physical, spiritual, and social dimensions—based on love and humanitarian values. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytic approach through structured and open interviews with church leaders and members of GBI SSS Jember to explore biblical-theological perspectives and their practical expressions in diaconal ministry. The findings reveal that the pastoral ministry to the poor in GBI SSS Jember remains sporadic and lacks integration between systematic theology and practical theology. As a result, the ministry has not yet addressed the root causes of poverty nor produced transformative impact within the congregation. The implication of this study is that the church must formulate a theologically grounded and contextually relevant model of pastoral ministry that embodies the prophetic and holistic example of Christ and the apostles, so that diaconal service moves beyond charity toward genuine spiritual and social transformation within the community of faith.

Abstract

This article argues that kenosis is the theological ground of Christian spirituality and a practicable ethic for communities today. Using a qualitative expository approach to Philippians 2:5–11, the study integrates textual criticism, form analysis, narrative–rhetorical mapping, and intertextual engagement with Isaiah 45:23. Close attention to key lexemes (morphē, harpagmos, ekenōsen, hyperypsōsen, Kyrios) clarifies that Christ’s self-emptying is not loss of divinity but the sovereign refusal to exploit privilege. Findings show that the hymn’s movement from preexistence to servanthood, obedience unto death, exaltation, and universal confession provides both a christological confession and a normative communal pattern. The novelty lies in bridging rigorous exegesis with a constructive spirituality of kenosis that critiques individualism, consumerism, power-obsession, and digital self-curation while grounding servant leadership and ecclesial unity. The study concludes that practicing kenosis self-giving love ordered to God’s glory reframes power as service and forms a credible public witness for the church.

Abstract

The generational gap between parents and children in the digital era presents new challenges in the transmission of Christian values. This study was conducted in response to differences in worldview, communication styles, ways of thinking, and levels of digital competence that may weaken the family’s function as the primary context for faith formation. The aim of this research is to formulate strategies to bridge the parent-child generational gap so that the transmission of Christian values remains relevant and effective in the digital age. This study employs a qualitative method through a literature review of reputable academic sources. The findings propose an integrative strategy that includes strengthening relational communication within the family, optimizing and regulating the use of digital media, as well as providing digital literacy training for parents in order to reduce the knowledge and skill gap with their children. Discipleship, parenting training, and pastoral counseling also emerge as essential components that can be implemented complementarily to support the faith formation process within the family. Overall, the study indicates that transmitting Christian values in the digital era requires creative, dialogical, and contextually grounded approaches, while maintaining collaborative partnership between the family and the church. Through such efforts, Christian values can be passed down in a continuous and meaningful manner across generations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to critically analyse Paul's contextualization of evangelism based on 1 Corinthians 9:20. This purpose is motivated by the diverse approaches to contextualization that have developed widely in the postmodern era. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach. The results of the study show that: First, Paul's contextualization is still relevant in the postmodern era. Second, Paul's contextualization always has biblical limitations. Third, Paul's contextualization is oriented towards the salvation of souls. A comprehensive and holistic understanding of Paul's contextual evangelism enables evangelists to implement it within biblical boundaries in their evangelistic ministry so that the Gospel message can be conveyed and win as many people as possible in the postmodern era.

Abstract

This article aims to provide a comprehensive and theological understanding of the phenomenon of dreams within the context of pastoral ministry, particularly from a faith perspective grounded in the authority of Scripture. The author seeks to examine how dreams are portrayed and utilized in biblical narratives as a means of divine revelation, and how these principles can be applied wisely in pastoral care. Additionally, this study intends to construct a biblically and theologically sound framework for evaluating dream experiences, so that church leaders may guide congregants responsibly and avoid misleading or speculative interpretations. Using a qualitative method and a biblical-theological approach, this study analyzes key texts such as Genesis 28, Daniel 2, and Matthew 1, and compares them with theological principles concerning revelation and the authority of Scripture. Theories of general and special revelation are employed to distinguish between dreams as a medium of divine communication and those originating from human psychological processes. The main findings indicate that while dreams may serve as a channel of revelation, their interpretation must be tested against Scripture and accompanied by pastoral wisdom. Therefore, this article offers a theologically grounded and pastorally responsible framework for church leaders to navigate the phenomenon of dreams without falling into spiritual speculation, subjective experience, or cultural syncretism.

Abstract

This study examines the theological congruence between the modern concept of preferential option for the poor and the narrative of Luke's Gospel. Amidst the pressing challenges of global socio-economic injustice, the Church's social teaching offers an ethical framework that is deeply rooted in biblical tradition. This study argues that the Gospel of Luke not only contains themes of concern for the poor, but also systematically presents a narrative theology that anticipates and provides a solid biblical foundation for this principle of partiality. Using qualitative research methods that integrate exegetical, narrative, and historical-critical analysis, this study analyzes five key passages: the Nazareth Manifesto (Luke 4:18-19), the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), the Sermon on the Plain (Luke 6:20-26), The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), and the story of Zacchaeus' conversion (Luke 19:1-10). The results of the analysis show that Luke consistently describes Jesus' mission and the nature of the Kingdom of God through the lens of social reversal, in which God actively sides with the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized. The results obtained from this study show that in Luke's theology, siding with the poor is not merely an ethical choice, but a structural principle inherent in God's work of salvation.

Abstract

The transfiguration of Jesus in Mark 9:2-8 is a crucial moment in the Gospels that affirms Jesus' divine identity as the glorified Son of God and the redeemer of mankind. The importance of this study is motivated by the frequent historical-theological misunderstandings regarding the transfiguration, where some parties overemphasize His human nature, while others focus too much on His divine nature, resulting in an unbalanced teaching. The main objective of this study is to analyze the text of Mark 9:2-8 exegetically to uncover the deep theological meaning behind the event and its relevant implications for the lives of believers today. This study uses a qualitative method with an exegetical analysis approach. The study shows that the transfiguration was a revelation of Christ's glory before His suffering on the cross, serving as a confirmation of the disciples' faith. The presence of Moses and Elijah symbolized the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets' Prophecies in Jesus. The voice of God the Father from the cloud affirmed Jesus' divine authority and demanded absolute obedience to Him. Implicatively, the transfiguration calls believers today to listen to and obey Christ, live a faith centered on His cross and resurrection, and hold fast to the hope of future glory. This event serves as a powerful invitation to strengthen faith and direct all aspects of life toward the glory of Christ amidst the challenges of our times.
