Abstract

The field of second language acquisition has grown enormously in the past decades. Many studies have been done on how learners acquire English as a second language; however, research on how visually impaired learners acquire English as a second or foreign language has been relatively scarce. It is even more difficult to find such studies in Vietnam. Based mainly on in-depth interviews with two visually impaired Vietnamese adults who have been successful in acquiring English, the present study seeks to answer two main questions: (1) How Vietnamese visually impaired learners acquire English as a second language; (2) What difficulties they have in learning English, and how they overcome their difficulties. The findings of the present study can contribute to the theory of second language acquisition and language teaching. The study can also provide strategies for practicing and learning a language not only for visually impaired learners but also for second language learners in general.

Abstract

Teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia faces several challenges not only from the teachers, students, facilities, teaching and learning process, but also how to assess the students. This present study purposed to investigate the English teachers’ views in conducting English assessments accordance in with 2013 curriculum. This study is a qualitative. The subject of this study is junior high school English teacher in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research data were collected through in-depth interview and observation. The results of the study suggested that before teaching, the teachers have prepared the lesson plans which included the rubric of the assessments in 2013 curriculum. English assessments that were used by the teachers were product, skill or knowledge assessment and attitude assessment. In product assessment, there were project and portfolio assessments, while skill or knowledge assessment consisted of writing, speaking, reading, and listening assessments. Thus, most of the teachers agreed with English assessment in 2013 curriculum because attitude assessment is separated from product, skill, and knowledge assessments. This study also revealed that the teachers encountered some problems in conducting the assessments dealing with student’s low motivation, lack of vocabulary, large amount of the student in the class, and shortage of teaching duration.

Abstract

Writing is the process of structuring ideas and sharpening intelligence. The students should understand and think about many things to produce good writing. This research addresses two research objectives: (1) what strategies the students use in learning writing skills, and (2) what problems the students have in learning the writing skill. The subjects of this study are 35 EFL students of English Departments in an Indonesian higher education institution. They were invited to complete a questionnaire of strategies in learning writing skills, and six of them were asked to have an interview about the problems during the learning process. The strategies are based on the stages of the writing process (planning, execution, and revision), which in this research were presented in three model factors (cognitive, metacognitive, and social strategies). The result showed that the average use for each strategy is as follows, 79% for metacognitive strategy, 74% for cognitive strategy, and 81% for social strategy. Regarding the second goal of this study, the problems that the students faced in learning writing include grammar and vocabulary issues.

The speaking ability increased in the post-test after using peer assessment. The peer assessment can improve the speaking ability of ESP students' performances. This study concludes that the implementation of peer-assessment improves the speaking ability performance of ESP students. Abstract

Punk constitutes a subculture that is perceived as an androgyny community in which there is no clear difference between men and women. However, this androgyny matter is questioned by the sexism that occurred through hegemonic masculinity. This study aims to see how the femininity of punk women intertwined with the hegemonic masculinity and to see the resistance to the hegemony in Kuehnert's I Want to Be Your Joey Ramone and Castellucci's Beige novel. The method used is descriptive analysis with the theory of hegemony masculinity. The results of this study indicate that hegemonic masculinity in punk is constructed through social structure and rock music. The resistance of women gets a rejection from both punk men and women themselves. The masculinity of punk women then raises the ambiguity of their position and role in the community.
