Abstract

The research aims to examine the effects of google word coach game and vocabulary mastery on students' speaking skills. This quasi-experimental study uses a 2x2 nonequivalent control group design with a factorial design carried out in four parallel classes, namely class XI IPS 1, XI IPS 2, XI IPS 3 and XI IPS 4 MA Negeri 1 Serang. Learning outcome data are obtained through pretest and posttest activities. The samples are 80 students randomly taken by adjusting to the condition and aim of the research. The results show a significant difference between the posttest of the experimental group and that of the control group. FO value is 5.225 and Sig. is 0.025 < 0.05. Thus, it shows that the null hypothesis is rejected, and the research hypothesis is accepted. It also means that there is a difference between the interaction effect of Google Word Coach game and that of vocabulary mastery on students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

In this research, the writers make research of consumptive behavior and its impacts. “The Joneses” film represents the impacts of consumptive behavior in American society in many aspects of life. The objective of this paper is to describe and find the impacts of consumptive behavior toward American society, as reflected in the film "The Joneses." In analyzing data, the writers use a qualitative method by gathering the data qualitatively. The result reveals kinds of consumptive behavior, factors of consumptive behavior, impacts of consumptive behavior, and things that influence consumptive behavior. Some of them are environment and internal motivation.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the translation strategies in “The Boss Baby: Back in Business” series from the application called Netflix. This research uses descriptive qualitative method in which the data is collected in the form of words or pictures rather than numbers. The analysis of this research focuses on the translation strategies used in the web television series on Netflix. This research applies strategies of translation theory by Gottlieb to analyze the subtitle of the series. The result of this research shows that there are six strategies in the web television series entitled “The Boss Baby: Back in Business,” namely transfer strategy, decimation strategy, deletion strategy, paraphrase strategy, imitation strategy, and transcription strategy.

Abstract

Punk constitutes a subculture that is perceived as an androgyny community in which there is no clear difference between men and women. However, this androgyny matter is questioned by the sexism that occurred through hegemonic masculinity. This study aims to see how the femininity of punk women intertwined with the hegemonic masculinity and to see the resistance to the hegemony in Kuehnert's I Want to Be Your Joey Ramone and Castellucci's Beige novel. The method used is descriptive analysis with the theory of hegemony masculinity. The results of this study indicate that hegemonic masculinity in punk is constructed through social structure and rock music. The resistance of women gets a rejection from both punk men and women themselves. The masculinity of punk women then raises the ambiguity of their position and role in the community.

Abstract

Relative clauses (RC), in whatever the languages, are essential for investigation especially on how noun phrases as nuclear and oblique relations are workable in Keenan & Comrie’s (1977) Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy. In this paper, Relativization Strategies of Sasak Ngeno-Ngene Dialect in Lombok is presented with the aims are (1) describing the ability of these relations in direct relativization, (2) analyzing the strategies used when indirect relativization occurs, and (3) formulating the right orderings of these relations in the hierarchy. The data on relativization strategies were taken by elicitations, an interview with some informants and documentation of the previous related studies. Then, a careful analysis was made with reference to common linguistic typological approach. The results of this study showed that: (1) gap strategy underlines direct relativization for S (subject) of SVO, O (object) of OVS and OBL of destination, (2) case-coding strategy is preferred by OBL of locative, and (3) passivization strategy is suitable for all indirect relativizations for O (object) of SVO and OBL of benefactive, recipient, and instrumental. The hierarchy of nuclear and oblique relations were formulated: S (SVO) > O (OVS) > OBL (DES > LOC) in direct relativization. Conversely, the hierarchy of O (SVO) > OBL (BEN > RECIP > INST) is shown in indirect relativization.

Abstract

This article aimed to describe, analyze, and explain the forms of speech acts of students after joining organizational education and regeneration program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Palopo. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that attempted to explain the speech acts that occur in the conversation. The subjects of this study were active students who had participated in the program. Data were taken from the results of observations, interviews, recording, and additional information in the field. The results of the research showed that the forms of the student speech act in the campus environment were (a) declarative, (b) imperative, and (c) interrogative.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to discover problems that Indonesian Vocational Students are having with the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) to improve TOEIC instruction. The participants were 18 students in school attending the TOEIC preparation course in the TOEIC course in October 2018. There were two steps in taking the data: (1) questionnaires on the listening and reading problems in the TOEIC test, and (2) interview on how they cope with the problems. The result shows that: 1) The majority of subjects had no experience in TOEIC and most of them did not have any preparation for the test; 2) Listening problems were at a high level in questionnaires 100% for the lack in vocabulary; 3) Reading problems were at a high level in questionnaires 100% for unknowing the meaning based on the context of the text; 4) The interview results showed that the students solve the problem in TOEIC test with learning by themselves, discuss with a partner and learning on the internet. The researchers recommend that the TOEIC course should include vocabulary building and be conducted frequently.

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate teacher`s belief about the implementation of curriculum 2013 in English language teaching. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative involving four teachers of junior high schools as the subjects. The data were collected using open-ended interview as the instrument. The result of this research showed that there were many kinds of activities which were mostly done by all participants; (1) teachers’ beliefs about curriculum 2013 understanding, (2) teachers’ beliefs about reaction of the learners, and (3) teachers’ beliefs about assessment in curriculum 2013. The teachers believed that curriculum changes brought positive, innovative, and creative impacts on English for future education. Besides, changes in the current curriculum also give influence on the way teachers and students understand English learning from previously traditionally based learning to modern pedagogical dimension. Therefore, it can be concluded that teachers` belief about curriculum 2013 has an impact on its implementation in English language teaching.

Abstract

Personal journeys in teacher education programs are crucial in helping pre-service teachers to build “a strong and positive professional identity” (Ivanova & Skara-Mincne, 2016; Yuan & Lee, 2015). This study aimed to elaborate on critical incidents regarding beliefs and motivation to become teachers in shaping teacher professional identity. It involved pre-service teachers who major in a Master’s Program in English Education at a university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. As the methodology to collect data, critical incident techniques was used, which constitute five steps: 1) Establishing general aims; 2) Establishing plans and specifications (formulating frames of references and categories); 3) Collecting data; 4) Analyzing data; and 5) Interpreting, analyzing, and reporting data (Hughes, Williamson, & Lloyd, 2007). Some teachers may mix their experiences with blind judgments due to emotional reactions. Thus, critical incident technique enables pre-service teachers to revisit their incidents critically. The results of the study led to a conclusion that lack of personal connections between the participants and people who had taught them contributed to the participants’ neutral beliefs about teaching, which in turn contributed to their low intrinsic motivation to be teachers.

Abstract

The meaning that a communicator intends to make determines the choice of the lexemes that the individual employs. Thus, this study explored the textual choices of MTN advertisements; as such entities were utilised to generate meaning potential. Seven advertisements of MTN functioned as the objects of analysis. The application of Halliday’s Theme-Rheme theoretical lens permitted the processing of the MTN advertisements into various semiotic slots. Such conceptual procedure informed the calibration of the textual components into different frequencies, using the table and graph to demonstrate clearer pictures of the outcomes. Observations showed the kinds of MTN advertising textual choices in two distinct sequences. The first was the thematic choices in the form of marked (As Nigerians, we can weave…), unmarked (Friends are the reason…) and conjunctive logical (so, and, that) constructs. The second aspect was the clause choices available in the texts. These clause choices emanated as declarative (Love is a feeling…), imperative (So reach out) with predicated themes (Share the priceless gift of love), and interrogative (Are you in love?) elements. One could also acknowledge disjunctive grammar (A year of new challenges…) and minor clauses (Happy Valentine’s Day), operating in the communications. Contextually, the study might influence the MTN telecommunications operator to review the nature of textual choices of persuasion, having understood the structures available in the current analysis.
