Abstract

Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is a concept that is being promoted to be applied to businesses. TBL prioritizes the balance of people, planet and profit in business. No exception for batik craftsmen. Batik crafts in their production process involve a coloring process, which is dangerous for the health of their employees and a washing process that risks disrupting soil fertility. This is the background to this research, so it was carried out at Batik Bambu Kenanga craftsmen, Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The research was carried out using a qualitative approach, with data obtained from observations and interviews. The results of the study found that Batik Bambu Kenanga is run with simple management, although not written and recorded every procedure and business process, Batik Bambu Kenanga has implemented TBL. Such as maintaining the health and safety of its employees when producing batik (implementing people), implementing adequate waste management (implementing planet), and establishing good relationships with village officials, local governments and other parties that influence its production process. These results show that Batik Bambu Kenanga, which has implemented TBL, finally gets convenience in running its business which is correlated with profit achievement. The existence of employee support, support from local residents and support from the government. All of that can guarantee the sustainability of the Batik Bambu Kenanga business and to gain competitive advantage in the midst of batik craft competition.

Abstract

In the global development agenda context, particularly the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the media are positioned as key actors capable of shaping public discourse, influencing policy, and raising awareness on critical issues. Hence, to examine the role of journalism and media in promoting sustainable development in Nigeria, this paper aimed to assess whether journalism and media have effectively contributed to sustainable development across Nigeria; investigate the extent to which media in Nigeria have supported national sustainable development initiatives, and identify the challenges they face in this endeavour. The study was guided by the Media Development Theory, which emphasises the role of the press in advancing national development priorities. The findings were that journalism and media have partially contributed to sustainable development across Nigeria, and, that, the media in Nigeria, to some extent, have not been adequately supporting national sustainable development initiatives in Nigeria. The study also revealed that the media face different types of challenges in the cause of performing their duties as agents of sustainable development, particularly in developing nations like Nigeria. The study recommended that there should be an enabling environment that allows the media to function effectively as catalysts for sustainable development. Besides, the study recommended that there should be a collaborative effort between media organisations, governments, and civil society so as to overcome the structural and institutional barriers that limit media's contribution to development. Lastly, journalism and media must be empowered to operate freely, independently, and with the resources necessary to engage with complex development issues so as to fulfill their role in promoting sustainable development, particularly in Nigeria.

Abstract

In Burkina Faso, more than three out of four private health facilities are located in urban areas, 90% of them in Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso. In terms of economic profitability, a private health service is more profitable in urban than in rural areas. And yet, private health facilities have been set up in rural areas, notably in Béguédo and Ouarégou in Burkina Faso. What explains private health provision in rural areas? A qualitative method was adopted to answer this research question. As in urban areas, profitability is the driving force behind the choice of rural areas by promoters, but promoters also cite reasons other than economic ones: altruism, reciprocity, awareness of saturation and increased competition in urban areas. These logics allow us to deconstruct the macroeconomic analysis of poverty, which does not take into account the specificity of each rural locality.

Abstract

The digital divide connotes the gap between those who have access to modern information and communication technologies (ICT) and those who do not, due to various factors like income, education, geographic location, or infrastructure. In the context of Nigeria, this divide has profound implications for economic, social, and political development, particularly in the realm of media. The media dimension of the digital divide explores the unequal access to digital platforms, content, and technologies, which influences the dissemination of information, civic engagement, and media consumption. The postulation of Diffusion of Innovation Theory was employed to achieve the goal of this paper. The paper argues that digital literacy, which includes the ability to use digital devices and navigate online platforms, is still a challenge in Nigeria. Although there has been a surge in mobile phone ownership, a large portion of the population, particularly older generations and those in remote areas, lack the necessary skills to fully benefit from digital media platforms. This lack of digital literacy hampers the capacity of citizens to engage with online news, education, and government services. The paper concludes that the digital divide in Nigeria, particularly in the media dimension, has significant implications for access to information, political participation, social inclusion, and education. While efforts to bridge this divide are underway, much work remains to be done. By addressing the infrastructure, economic, and digital literacy challenges, Nigeria can begin to close the digital divide and ensure that all its citizens can participate fully in the digital age.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the vortex beams' interaction with ionized media this work centers on the kinetics of the beam's propagation and its ionization efficiency. The spatial distribution of the intensity of the vortex beam propagating through plasma, paying special attention to the energy transfer and beam waist evolution processes. It was discovered that the ionization rate was roughly 1.0 ×10-6, indicating a low ionization efficiency at the specified energy levels. Furthermore, to understand the mechanisms governing the interaction between the vortex beam and the plasma break, down the electromagnetic fields into external and induced components. The findings suggest that optimizing the beam's parameters, such as intensity and polarization, can enhance ionization efficiency and improve applications in plasma-assisted communication and advanced particle manipulation. Furthermore, understanding how the medium's properties affect vortex beam propagation is crucial for developing more efficient systems. The study highlights the importance of considering plasma characteristics when applying vortex beams to practical problems and offers recommendations for improving ionization efficiency and beam stability in ionized environments.
