Abstract

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive global issue that transcends cultural, social, and economic boundaries. Rooted in unequal power dynamics, it manifests in various forms, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse. In conflict-affected regions such as Borno State in Northeastern Nigeria, the prevalence and impact of GBV are particularly alarming. Decades of insurgency and terrorism by groups such as Boko Haram have not only caused widespread displacement but have also exacerbated existing gender inequalities, leading to increased vulnerability of women and girls to various forms of violence. This study examines the prevalence, factors, impacts, and strategies to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. Theoretically, the Ecological Model was used. Findings reveal that domestic violence (34.1%) is the most common form of GBV, followed by sexual violence (25.4%), human trafficking (24.2%), and harmful traditional practices (16.3%). Key drivers of GBV include forced marriages (54.2%), influenced by religious practices, cultural norms (26.1%), conflict (24.2%), and poverty (22.0%). The study highlights the multifaceted impacts of GBV, including educational disruption (30.7%), physical and mental health issues, family breakdowns, and increased vulnerabilities. Alarmingly, 59.5% of respondents reported a lack of access to essential support services. To address GBV, the study recommends the implementation community-wide educational programs to challenge harmful cultural practices, gender norms, and societal attitudes that perpetuate GBV.

Abstract

When investing, investors really need certain indicators to assess the company whose shares will be purchased. These indicators are analysis of financial ratios such as Profitability Ratios where only two ratios are taken, namely Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). Apart from the Profitability Ratio, the Liquidity Ratio, namely the Current Ratio (CR) and the Solvency Ratio, namely the Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) as an indicator of the health of a company. In this research, the author uses panel data regression analysis which consists of time series data and also cross-section data, where the independent variable is regressed on the dependent variable, namely stock returns. The author chose the independent variables using Profitability Ratios where the author chose from these ratios for this research the Return on Assets (ROA) Ratio and the Return on Equity (ROE) Ratio. Meanwhile, for the Liquidity Ratio, the Current Ratio (CR) is chosen and for the Solvency Ratio, the Debt to Equity Ratio (DER). The independent variables consisting of ROA, ROE, and DER have a probability value greater than the significance level of 5% so this can be interpreted as meaning that the independent variables ROA, ROE, and DER have no influence on the dependent variable, namely stock returns. However, for CR, which is also an independent variable, the probability value is 0.0008, which is smaller than the 5% significance level, so it can be concluded that CR has an effect on the dependent variable.

Abstract

This study began with children who commit deviant acts often showing a bad attitude in the eyes of society and the government. They are often stigmatized as naughty children or perpetrators of criminal acts. Children who commit crimes must also be punished, but the punishment given is different from the punishment given to adults. The purpose of this study is to find out, understand, and analyze both in terms of regulations, forms and sanctions for children who commit repeated crimes. The research method used is normative legal research with a statutory approach, namely Law Number 1 of 1946 concerning the Criminal Code and Law Number 11 of 2012 concerning the Juvenile Criminal Justice System and a conceptual approach. The technique of collecting legal materials in this study uses literature studies while the legal material analysis technique used in this study is the descriptive analysis method. The results of this study indicate that in the SPPA Law concerning the imposition of sanctions on children who commit repeat crimes, there is a legal vacuum so that when judges handle cases of children who commit repeat crimes, the sanctions are returned to the Criminal Code, which sanctions are in the form of imprisonment that is heavier than before, namely plus one third. Therefore, the legislators in this case failed to formulate a norm in the formulation of the crime.

Abstract

This study investigates the intersection of biblical interpretations, philosophical thought, and gender theory to explore how the concept of human identity and gender roles has evolved. The purpose of this research is to analyze traditional religious and philosophical views on gender duality, focusing on interpretations of the Genesis creation narrative and philosophical ideas like Plato’s Symposium. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach, incorporating theological, historical, and logical analysis to assess various interpretations of gender identity. The findings reveal that while traditional religious perspectives emphasize gender complementarity, philosophical discourses present androgyny as a model for understanding human identity. This research highlights the need for a contemporary dialogue between theological institutions and modern gender theory to address issues of gender equality and identity formation. The conclusion recommends that religious institutions reconsider their stances on gender roles and engage with evolving social perspectives to promote a more inclusive view of human identity. Ultimately, the study advocates for inclusive theological reflection that respects traditional values and modern understandings of gender equality.

Abstract

This study examined the challenges to journalists’ safety in covering the Boko Haram insurgency in North East, Nigeria. The research sought to assess the nature of safety challenges journalists face, the level of safety they have, to identify the safety routine measures journalists adopted before fieldwork, and find out whether media organisations provide safety measures to their reporters. The Protection Motivation was reviewed and used as framework for the study. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative research approach was used as a means of getting valuable data. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was selected as the methods for gathering relevant information. A sample size of 41 participants was selected for the FGD using purposive sampling technique. Thematic analysis method was used in analysing the data generated, which was used in answering the research questions. The study found out that journalists who cover the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East adopt various local and international best safety practices laid down for journalists covering dangerous assignments. The data also revealed that the safety routine measures adopted by journalists before fieldwork reduced risk and improved safety. The findings further revealed that media organizations do not provide safety measures for journalists and that the safety of journalists covering the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East is solely their responsibility. The research concludes that the issue of safety and protection of journalists in Nigeria must be given due consideration by the government and media stakeholders. The way and manner journalists lose their lives in the process of discharging their duty is alarming. The study recommends that the safety and protection of journalists should be made part of journalists’ employment contracts, and there should be a national protection and safety protocol curriculum and training for journalists.
