Abstract

It is undeniable fact that English strengthens its role as international language day by day. In the response to this phenomenon, the Indonesian Ministry of Education has been trying to increase the quality of the education system since years ago; one of them is the changes of curriculum and its teaching approaches. Among many curricula that had been adapted in Indonesia, it is believed that communicative approach or communicative language teaching has mostly adapted in more than two changes of curricula. Therefore, the English teachers of Indonesia are assumed to be familiar with this teaching approach. The research had been done to 18 English teachers of junior high school level in Mempawah Hilir. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to review the results of an investigation about their perceptions in relation to their understanding on CLT principles, and their challenges in implementing CLT. Teachers’ perceptions itself is considered important because it reflects teachers classroom practices. By using cross-sectional descriptive survey research design, the data were derived from questionnaire and classroom observation checklist. It showed that, theoretically, the teachers had good understanding on the CLT principles. Unfortunately, in contrast, it did not reflect in their teaching practices. This phenomenon was caused mostly by some challenges identified from the questionnaire, for instance, big class size and student’s low English proficiency. In short, based on the results, it is hoped that this result can be one of references in making education/curriculum policy in the future.

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills used to measure the level of academic success. There is a mutual relationship between reading skills and academic success. Students from a variety of backgrounds struggle with reading skill. The purpose of this study was to investigate how graphic organizers can be used in enhancing reading comprehension. Graphic organizers (GOs) facilitate the reading comprehension by providing clear visualizations of ideas and facilitating student reflection. This study constitutes an attempt to elaborate the research evidence regarding the usefulness of GOs on text learning and the various types of graphic organizers, which use different conventions to communicate information and are classified in various ways. It also summarizes research findings and issues on the use of GOs in text types namely narrative, descriptive, recount, procedure and report. The result showed that in using graphic organizers in reading comprehension, students were successful in identifying the structures and elements of the text types. By using the graphic organizers, the students were able to understand the reading concepts. In utilizing literacy strategies like graphic organizers, student learning and independence is increased and they are more prepared to practice these skills independently.

Abstract

Speech is the primary means by which humans communicate with each other. When we listen to someone speaking we generally focus on understanding their meaning. We are trying to interpret what does the speaker want to tell us by generating the ideas of the language she/he produces. Since the language is series of sound that has meaning, the perception of speech involves the recognition of patterns in the acoustic signal in both time and frequency. It is much easier to get the meaning of a conversation if both the speaker and the listener has same language. But, if both of them has different language it will take time to get the clear meaning of a conversation. This paper is trying to examine the basic issues in speech perception that human beings face everyday consciously or unconsciously.

Abstract

Teaching English Grammar is not easy because there are several factors causing the lack of motivation and concentration of the learner in acquiring the grammar-based inputs of the English language in the classroom. In language teaching, teachers need to understand how to make the classroom as a place of learning and not just a classroom for the students to learn during the teaching process. With the rapid growth of technology language teachers can select the tools that appropriate with the teaching objective. The application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), particularly educational software, to facilitate the learning and teaching process has become a more and more popular trend among teachers. Therefore, this study attempts to highlight teaching passive voice in the EFL Classroom through the implementation of ICT in teaching and learning process.

Through the three novels, one title is in the form of trilogy, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, George R. R. Martin’s Fevre Dream, and Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain Trilogy, the writer found out that the vampires in the novels are portrayed as masters who literally suck the blood from the victims, the slaves, or those who have the characteristics of being ones. The master and slave relationship describes the theory of Marx’s Vampire

Abstract

Heroism is a noble deed full of courage and bravery to protect the weak and the oppressed. The heroes have been known throughout the centuries, through the history records, artworks and literary works. Heroes have been de- scribed as having perfect physical appearance and strength. However, there are also depictions that a hero has a dilemma when he has the half-blood descendant of both the people he fights for and the enemy he fights to. In this research, the writer analyzes the half-blood hero in Y. B. Mangunwijaya’s novel, Ikan- IkanHiu, Ido, Homa and compares it to James Cameron’s movie, Avatar. The writer uses Structuralism and Semiotics approaches to find the heroic symbols and signs, compare them and find the particular structure. The result can be found that the half-blood heroes both in the novel and movie have the prominent physical appearance of superiority and strength compared to others. They also deal with the dilemma in status and position in the society as the half-blood or mixed-blood heroes, and they hold the heroic principles such as bravery and the ideal of protecting the weak and fight for the oppressed.
