Abstract

The method of English learning has been developed a lot. This allows teachers to choose a suitable method to apply in class. Meanwhile, students’ characters and learning models differ from one another. Many teachers do not pay attention to this in classroom learning. This research aims to examine the Dictogloss method for Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic students as an optimization of English language learning. This mixed methods research uses questionnaires, tests, interviews, and observations. This research uses pre-tests and post-tests as a tool to measure student development before and after treatment which is assessed quantitatively. The questionnaire was used to determine the sample's learning style, while interviews and observations were used as further research to examine more deeply the use of dictogloss for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic students. From this research, it was found that the dictogloss method can be effectively applied to English language learning characterized by visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. It's just that several things need to be considered in its application, such as the use of videos, audio recordings, and products produced to facilitate students' learning characteristics. So from this research, it can be concluded that dictogloss can be applied to English language learning with the characteristics of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles.

Abstract

Critical literacy in English language education plays a role in developing reading and writing skills, while also integrating learning with everyday life. However, some researchers have found a lack of literacy activities in Indonesia, particularly at the higher education level. This study explores the application of a critical literacy approach in English language learning through the discourse analysis of Batak Angkola local wisdom. This classroom action research involves 8 EFL students. The study examines the development patterns of students' critical literacy, their change in perspective towards the values of local wisdom, and identifies the challenges and benefits of applying the critical literacy approach. The results show that the critical literacy approach improved students' analytical skills from 65 to 85, their understanding of philosophical values from 30% to 85%, and their awareness of cultural preservation from 40% to 95%. There were also improvements in English language skills and other competencies, such as leadership, presentation, collaboration, self-contribution, respect, critical thinking, and the broadening of perspectives through discussions. This study contributes to the development of English language teaching methods integrated with the preservation of local wisdom.

Abstract

This preliminary study is motivated by the role of pragmatic markers in both spoken and written communication, which reflects speaking fluency. It employs Beeching’s (2016) matched-guise methodology, utilizing online forms to engage participants from two different locations. The primary aim of this study is to investigate EFL learners’ preferences for using pragmatic markers in their utterances. To gather data, Google Forms were distributed to universities students in two different locations. A total of 39 participants completed the questionnaire, among them were 17 respondents from Central Java, 1 from Bali, 1 from West Java, and 20 from West Kalimantan. Notably, 21 participants identified English as their second language, while 18 reported it as their third language. Upon analysis, the data indicated that participants perceived utterances containing the pragmatic markers "well," "I mean," and "sort of" as embodying polite, direct, and friendly attitudes. While “like” tends to contribute to a sense of indirectness in communication, the utterances featuring "you know" and "just" had no significant impact on the directness of the statements. Future researchers should investigate the broader categories and contextual variations of these markers that were potentially overlooked in the current study.

Abstract

This research aims to explore management students' perceptions of translanguaging practices in the EFOC class within the management study program. Using qualitative research in the form of case study, the writer investigated the perception of students on translanguaging practice.  The data was obtained from the respondents’ response related to the translanguaging practice in EFOC class in understanding the instruction. An interview was conducted with the representative to clarify their perception related to translanguaging practice they have experienced in EFOC class. The data were reread to understand the situation and aligned it with the classroom situation. The result shows that Many students have limited exposure to English due to their educational and social backgrounds, having primarily learned the language in school with infrequent practice, while their community language prevails. However, students believe that the translanguaging practice has facilitated their understanding and enhanced their interactions with peers. They did not view translanguaging as a disrespectful or confusing strategy in the EFOC class. Conversely, they strongly agree that this practice has been beneficial in comprehending the lecturer's instructions and is vital for the EFOC class.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of podcast-based reading tasks in enhancing reading skills among fourth-semester English Department students at a private university in Malang. Using a qualitative case study approach, twelve intermediate-level students participated in podcast-based reading activities, followed by semi-structured interviews. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in students’ experiences. The findings reveal that students experienced improved reading comprehension when listening to podcasts before reading transcripts, particularly in initial text understanding, word recognition, attention to textual details, and active engagement with intentionally gapped transcripts. Despite minor challenges related to speech clarity, students reported increased reading confidence and expressed interest in continued use of this method. The integration of listening and reading through podcasts demonstrates potential for enhancing EFL students’ reading development and engagement with English texts.

Abstract

This study investigates Matthew McConaughey’s White House speech concerning the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, analyzing its persuasive strategies through the lens of Cicero’s five canons of rhetoric: Invention, Arrangement, Style, Memory, and Delivery. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach, the research analyze the speech transcript and video to identify artistic tools (ethos, pathos, logos), structural organization, stylistic choices, the speaker’s command of the material, and his physical presentation. Findings indicate the implementation of all five canons. McConaughey’s Invention features pathos through victim narratives, reinforced by his ethos as a Uvalde native and appeals to logos through proposed policy solutions. The speech’s Arrangement effectively utilizes a problem-solution structure, moving from emotional appeals to logical calls for action. Stylistically, the speech employs vivid imagery, repetition, and various rhetorical figures to amplify its message. While not relying on rote memorization, McConaughey’s Memory is evident in his internalization and authentic emotional connection to the content. Finally, his Delivery, characterized by empathetic vocal modulation, strategic pacing, purposeful gestures, and sincere facial expressions, significantly contributed to the message’s impact and authenticity. This research demonstrates the enduring relevance of classical rhetorical principles in contemporary public discourse, particularly in addressing sensitive national tragedies and advocating for policy change, suggesting the potential for further exploration into the long-term impact of such celebrity rhetoric.

Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical implications of integrating psycholinguistic principles into English language instruction through the strategic use of Learning Management Systems (LMS), specifically Google Drive, Google Classroom, and Zoom. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research was conducted with seven students enrolled in a psycholinguistics course within the English Literature program at Persada Bunda Indonesia University. Data collection involved triangulated methods, including classroom observations, reflective journals, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of student outputs. The findings reveal that embedding psycholinguistic concepts within LMS-based instruction significantly enhanced learners’ understanding of language processing mechanisms in the brain. Moreover, it fostered the development of metacognitive strategies and promoted learner autonomy in English language acquisition. Each LMS tool played a distinctive role in supporting psycholinguistic dimensions of learning: Zoom facilitated real-time language production and interaction; Google Classroom provided a platform for structured linguistic input and cognitive engagement; while Google Drive promoted collaborative construction of meaning and reflective learning practices. The study concludes that the integration of psycholinguistic theory with digital learning environments can enrich the quality of English language education. Such an approach aligns instructional practices with cognitive processes, thereby fostering more effective, engaging, and learner-centered pedagogy in higher education settings.
