Abstract

This article investigates matters of Americanization in the adaptation of Power Rangers superhero serials to be imbued with American values from its original Japanese version entitled Super Sentai. Even though transcultural serials are considered successful in the United States and worldwide, they are deemed culturally problematic. Through a qualitative method and an explorative approach, the analysis explores that Power Rangers’ adaptation is shadowed by gender, racial, and second character issues. For instance, the gender aspect is related to gender swap, pink rangers, and the wearing of skirts by female rangers. Racial issues cover matters of the idealized melting pot in the U.S. Second character issues include matters of child employment, demonized monsters, and the usage of armed weapons. In conclusion, while Power Rangers is commercially successful, its adaptation process selectively modifies cultural elements, presenting an idealized rather than an authentic reality.

Abstract

This study delves into how ex nihilo—a radical departure from the usual order—manifests in Seno Gumira Ajidarma’s short story “Keroncong Pembunuhan,” drawing on Slavoj Žižek’s theory. In this research, the authors conducted a detailed examination of the main character’s moments of crisis and rebellion, revealing that these disruptions transcend personal struggles. Rather, they emerge as significant acts of protest against the societal norms and regulations that exert influence over individual identity and behavior. The analysis does not stop at the story itself, as it also draws on Ajidarma’s background, highlighting parallels between the marksman’s crisis of conscience and the author’s real-life struggles with authority during Indonesia’s New Order Era. Unlike earlier studies that primarily examined inner conflicts or moral dilemmas, this research distinguishes itself by employing Žižek’s ideas to illustrate how radical subjectivity and novel forms of resistance emerge in a contemporary Indonesian novel. The findings demonstrate how ex nihilo becomes a tool for expressing agency and dissent, opening up new ways to consider the connections between literature, ideology, and politics. This study concludes by encouraging further research on Žižek’s theories in the context of Indonesian writing, suggesting how stories can challenge power and envision new forms of subjectivity in the aftermath of authoritarianism.

Abstract

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine after October 7 exacerbates, currently becoming the world’s most alarming issue. In the United States, which has an intimate relationship with Israel for providing arms and funds, American pro-Palestinian citizens march to the streets to chastise the government’s stance that bestows the wrong side. The endless action prompted Biden to consider the Palestinians entering the United States, which triggered the Republicans and Democrats to take sides, either to humiliate or support Biden’s manoeuvre. The political polarization related to Biden’s breakthrough became an enthralling topic delivered by politicians in their press releases, debates, or interviews. This study examines the contradictory ideological framing of the Republican and Democratic Senators toward the Palestinian immigration plan. The authors analyzed the interviews of Republican Senator Mitch McConnell and Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, taken from YouTube, using a CDA approach. The transcribed interviews were observed to unveil the stylistic, syntactic, and semantic elements aimed at uncovering these senators’ ideological biases. The study, which focuses merely on van Dijk’s micro-textual structures, shows that McConnell rarely utilized stylistic and syntactic elements but heavily relied on actor description and evidentiality. In contrast, Sanders heavily applied dysphemism and example/illustration strategies.

Abstract

The growing intersection of political communication and ideological persuasion raises concerns about how language is used to legitimize state violence. Although previous research has addressed themes of populism and nationalistic rhetoric, limited attention has been given to how wartime speeches function as discursive practices that construct moral legitimacy for military intervention. Addressing this gap, this study investigates how Donald Trump’s June 2025 Iran speech constructs the enemy, moralizes war, and normalizes pre-emptive military violence. Using qualitative critical discourse analysis, the study examines both the transcript and delivery of the speech through Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of discourse, focusing on the ideological square and micro-level strategies such as actor description, metaphor, hyperbole, euphemism, presupposition, religious authority, victimization, and lexicalization. The findings show that the speech constructs a polarized moral framework in which the United States and its allies are represented as morally virtuous and divinely sanctioned, while Iran is framed as an irrational and existential threat. Military aggression is legitimized through hyperbolic glorification, religious invocation, euphemistic framing of destruction, and the strategic omission of civilian suffering, presenting war as a moral necessity rather than a political choice. While limited to a single case and not supported by corpus-based analysis, the study contributes to the literature on wartime political discourse by extending Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model to contemporary conflict rhetoric and identifying a morally framed adaptation of the burden argument, shifting from economic to security and ethical justification. These findings underscore the ideological power of political language in shaping public consent for military action and highlight the need for sustained critical scrutiny of wartime political communication.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code-mixing in digital mystical content demonstrates a shift in the role of language from a communication tool to a technique for establishing spiritual authority and social legitimacy. Although there has been a lot of research on code-mixing in education, entertainment, and general media, there have been few studies that emphasize this technique in the world of digital mysticism. This research will look at how Sara Wijayanto uses code-mixing in her three mystical YouTube videos to negotiate identity and establish spiritual authority in front of a digital audience. The study material consisted of three movies totaling 150 minutes in length, which were transcribed and analyzed using Muysken's code-mixing typology to identify linguistic forms and Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis to evaluate ideological and social aspects. The study's findings demonstrate that English vocabulary terms such as "energy," "possessed," and "safe zone" are purposefully used during spiritual interactions to project a professional image and scientific legitimacy. In the digital domain, code-mixing represents cosmopolitan identity and spiritual power.
