Abstract

Developing countries, especially those located in tropical and subtropical regions such as Indonesia, face serious public health challenges related to helminth infections. Hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale), Whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and Kremi worm (Enterobius vermicularis) are the most common types of worms found in children.  In Indonesia, the prevalence of worms reaches 30%-90% in some provinces, with a significant increase in infections among primary school students in rural areas. This study aimed to identify Enterobius vermicularis eggs in children in grades 1-2 at SDN 01 Mulyorejo, Kesesi sub-district, Pekalongan district and analyze the risk factors, given the lack of previous research in this location. This study is descriptive, sampling with total sampling. The sample was 21 students in grades 1 and 2 at SDN 01 Mulyorejo, Kesesi Subdistrict, Pekalongan Regency who met the inclusion criteria. Samples were examined using the selopan tape method to detect the presence of Enterobius vermicularis eggs and questionnaires and interviews to determine risk factors for Enterobius vermicularis infection. The results of the analysis of risk factors for helminthiasis showed that infected respondents did not apply good personal hygiene, such as not washing hands before eating, not cutting nails regularly, and having a habit of biting nails and sleeping together. Thus, it can be concluded that Enterobius vermicularis infection was found in grade 1 and 2 students at SDN 01 Mulyorejo, Kesesi sub-district due to lack of good hygiene. Abstract

Hypertension is one of the major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that causes serious damage to blood vessels and vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, and brain. The Indonesian Health Survey reported that the prevalence of hypertension among adolescents aged 15–24 years reached 9.3%. According to the Basic Priority Rating (BPR) from the Depok City Health Office, hypertension ranks as the top NCD priority with a score of 38.69%. Early detection is essential to prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment. One method that can be used for early detection of hypertension in adolescents is the Cold Pressure Test (CPT). This study aimed to determine changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure using the CPT method. This was an observational study with a cross-sectional design involving 43 medical students as participants. Blood pressure was measured at three stages: before hand immersion in ice water, after 30 seconds, and after 60 seconds. Data were analyzed using the Friedman test to assess differences across the three measurements. The results showed that systolic blood pressure increased from 117.35 mmHg to 132.12 mmHg at 60 seconds, while diastolic blood pressure increased from 79.07 mmHg to 88.74 mmHg. Statistical analysis revealed a p-value of 0.001 (< 0.005) for both systolic and diastolic pressure. The study concluded that there was a significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure after the CPT. This indicates that adolescent blood pressure is reactive to cold stimuli, and CPT may serve as an effective method for early detection of hypertension. Abstract

Physical activity encompasses all body movements carried out for work, play, or travel, while physical inactivity is characterized byminimal movement and low energy expenditure. Body Mass Index (BMI) and recovery heart rate are important indicators in assessingfitness levels and health risks. This study aims to determine whether there are differences in cardiovascular recovery time after physicalactivity based on BMI categories among medical students at Gunadarma University. The study employs a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling among FKUG students who meet the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using paired T-tests and One WayANOVA according to data distribution. The procedure consists of two stages: measuring blood pressure, heart rate, O₂ saturation, and BMI before and after a six-minute walk test, followed by measuring heart rate recovery time after approximately 20 minutes of rest. Most respondents were female (92.5%) from the 2019 cohort (77.4%), with an average age of 20.79 years. A significant increase was observedin systolic blood pressure and heart rate after training (p=0.001), but not in diastolic pressure (p=0.622). No significant difference wasfound in recovery time based on BMI category (p=0.516). Physical training significantly affected certain physiological parameters such as systolic pressure and heart rate, but BMI status did not significantly contribute to post-activity recovery speed.  Keywords:     Physical Activity, Body Mass Index, Medical Students, Cardiovascular Recovery,  Pulse Rate

Abstract

Malaria is both an acute and chronic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium with the clinical manifestation of fever, anemia and spleen enlarfication. People with malaria, which the plasmodium attacks, are red blood cells. Malaria infections destroy erythrocytes, which results in a change in hemoglobin levels far lower than normal value. This study aims to find out the hemoglobin level in malaria patients, knowing the distribution of the number of malaria patients and the hemoglobin levels based on gender, age, and type of Plasmodium sp. The study employed a secondary descriptive method of data analysis by calculating the distribution of hemoglobin levels presented in the form of tables and narratives, the data used by up to 116 samples of malaria patients. Data retrieval took place at rspad gatot soebroto lab with populations and samples from 2013- 2023. Obtained from a hemoglobin level check in malarial patients shows a value of min 7.0 gr/dl, Max 16.9 gr/dl, mean 12.6 gr/dl, low hemoglobin level 82 patients (70.7%), normal 31 patients (26.7%), 3 (2.6%), the highest distribution of the number of patients in 2022 (15.5 percent). With the largest abnormal measured measured in men by 75 patients (64.2%), the results of a lower level check at 19- 44 (adults), with 64 patients (55.2%), the most malaria patients suffer from plasmodium vivax with a lower percentage of 51 patients (44.0%). In conclusion, that the most malaria affected men, an age susceptible to 19-44 (adult) malaria, and most malaria patients have plasmodium vivax infected.  Keywords : Hemoglobin, gender, malaria, Plasmodium sp, age

Abstract

Neutral Buffer Formalin 10% is commonly used to fix tissue whose structure will be observed. The observation is carried out to diagnose the disease. Poor fixation results will affect further tissue processing. The right concentration and fixation time will also produce quality tissue preparations and the right diagnosis. This study determined the quality of the hematoxylin-eosin staining results in the mouse kidney fixation process with variations in NBF concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. This research method is observational by fixing the mouse kidney organ in NBF with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% for 24 hours at room temperature. The results of the study are in the form of scores, which are then processed using the Kruskal-Wallis Test. Based on the total scoring results, NBF 10% is the best concentration. The result of the Kruskal-Wallis test is p ≤ 0.05, which means there is a significant difference, and the Posthoc test result is that the NBF concentration of 15% is a concentration that has no significant difference with the control. While NBF 5% and 20% have significant differences from the NBF 10% control. Thus, NBF 10% is the best concentration, and NBF 15% has better assessment results than NBF 5% and 20%. Abstract

Chronic Kidney Failure (CKD) can be defined as a decrease in the Kidney Filtration Rate (GFR) for ≥ 3 months which can later cause fluids, electrolytes and waste to accumulate in the body and cause various complications. One high-risk complication that can worsen the manifestations is Anemia. When the kidneys are damaged, the production of erythropoietin (the hormone that regulates erythrocyte production) will decrease, where if erythrocyte production is reduced then anemia occurs. Under normal circumstances, phosphate and calcium are in balance with a reciprocal relationship (pathonomonics). When GFR decreases, the concentration of phosphate in the plasma will increase, which will later combine with calcium to form calcium phosphate, so that the calcium concentration will decrease (Hypocalcemia). The aim of this study was to determine the description of calcium levels in CKD patients with Anemia and non-Anemia at the Bio Medika Kedoya Clinical Laboratory. This research was carried out descriptively using 202 secondary data from CKD patients suffering from anemia and non anemia taken from January 2022 - December 2023. The results of the study showed that 140 patients (69.3%) experienced hypocalcemia with the result of hypocalcemia in CKD patients who also suffered from anemia. many, namely 102 patients (50.5%) with an average calcium level of 8.37 mg/dL. The prevalence of male CKD patients was higher at 121 patients (59.9%) compared to female patients at 81 patients (40.1%). And based on age group, the highest percentage was found in elderly aged ≥ 60 years) as many as 172 patients (85.1%). From this research it can be concluded that it is important to carry out laboratory examinations for CKD diseases such as GFR because new symptoms can be felt when the condition gets worse and it is important to check for complications that may occur such as anemia and hypocalcemia which will later cause osteomalacia, osteoporosis and ectopic calcification. Abstract

Candida albicans is a type of pathogen fungus that can cause opprtunistic infections, especially in individuals with low immune systems. The gold standard for Candida albicans identification is culture examination using Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media, but this is relatively media are needed that are more economical, easily available, and able to support optimal fungal growth. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of soybean (Glycine max) concentration as an alternative media to replace SDA for the growth of Candida albicans. This research was conducted experimentally with a quantitative approach, using a variet of soybean concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) which were tested for growth macrocopically, microscopically (KOH 10% and LPCB), calcualtion of the number of colonies and concentration effectiveness. The results showed that soybean media supported the growth of Candida albicans, with 20%concentration giving effective results resembling growth on SDA media. Based on these results, soybean has the potential as an alternative medium with an economical price for Candida albicans fungal culture in microbiology laboratories.   Keywords: Candida albicans, soybean, alternative media, Sabouraud Dextrose Agar.

Abstract

Histotechnics aims to identify tissue structure through a staining process, one of which uses eosin which has dangerous side effects and is expensive. The purpose of this study was to test the stability of dragon fruit extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) as a substitute for eosin staining in mouse liver tissue (Mus musculus) with varying storage times of 10 days and 15 days. This research method used a quasi-experimental with a descriptive approach. Staining was carried out on 12 preparations divided into three groups: control (eosin), 10-day extract, and 15-day extract. The results showed that the best staining was obtained in the control group for total scoring 60, while the 10-day extract group produced a fairly good total scoring staining quality 31, and the 15-day group showed a decrease in total scoring staining quality 23. The results of this study revealed that dragon fruit extract has the potential as an alternative eosin staining, especially after 10 days of storage, but its effectiveness decreased after 15 days of storage. Further research recommendations include optimizing extract stability to extend the shelf life of natural dyes.  Keywords: Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus), Eosin, Histology..
