Abstract

This study explores how ethnography of communication in the movie Green Book (2018) reflects social roles through the characters’ dialogue. Using Dell Hymes’ SPEAKING framework, it examines how the characters’ communication reveals cultural values and navigates social dynamics between Dr. Don Shirley, an African-American pianist, and Tony Lip, his Italian-American driver, during their road trip through racially segregated America in the 1960s. A content analysis method is employed to analyze key dialogues, focusing on elements like Setting, Participants, Ends, Act Sequence, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms, and Genre. The findings show that differences in social roles based on race, class, and power are constructed and negotiated through language use in the conversation. Dr. Shirley used formal and polite language to assert his authority while dealing with being treated unfairly in society. On the other hand, Tony’s casual and resistant way of speaking reflected his working-class background. These differences in how they communicate highlight the power struggles and cultural tensions in their social roles. These insights reveal how the film uses language to portray the complexities of communication across cultures, allowing viewers to better understand the interplay of social roles, race, and class in interpersonal relationships.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the language functions in the visual novel Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney by Shu Takumi using Jakobson's (1960) theory of language functions. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method to examine the data. Based on the analysis, the researchers identified four of the six language functions proposed by Jakobson within the visual novel. The most dominant language function found is the conative function, with the highest percentage of 24 instances (36.4%). The second most frequent is the referential function, which appears in 19 instances (28.8%). The emotive function ranks third, with 14 instances (21.2%). Lastly, the phatic function appears the least, with 9 instances (13.6%). These findings indicate that the conative function plays a central role in the visual novel, highlighting its focus on influencing the listener's actions or responses. The presence of other functions, such as referential, emotive, and phatic, also reflects the dynamic and interactive nature of the dialogue in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Abstract

The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, commonly referred to as Industry 4.0, has ushered in significant technological advancements and disruptions across industries, including education. The teaching of English as a second language has been particularly impacted, with digital tools, artificial intelligence, and online platforms reshaping traditional pedagogical approaches. This paper explores the challenges faced by English teachers in adapting to these changes, as well as the innovative teaching methodologies enabled by Industry 4.0 technologies. We discuss the role of technology in enhancing learner engagement, the need for teacher upskilling, and the potential implications for English language proficiency in a globalized economy. Using case studies from various educational contexts, we propose strategies to successfully integrate Industry 4.0 technologies into English language teaching while preserving the human element of education. The findings suggest that while technology enhances learning efficiency, teacher adaptability and continuous professional development remain key to leveraging the benefits of the 4.0 era.

Abstract

This study explores the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English learning, examining its advantages, challenges, and future opportunities. Through a systematic literature review (SLR) of 20 studies published between 2020 and 2024, the findings reveal that AI tools such as chatbots, grammar checkers, and speech recognition systems have significantly enhanced language acquisition by enabling personalized learning, immediate feedback, and engaging educational experiences. However, challenges persist, including limited accessibility in underdeveloped regions, cultural biases in AI systems, and ethical concerns about data privacy. Moreover, the lack of teacher training and disparities in AI adoption further hinder its effectiveness. This study highlights future opportunities such as hybrid learning models and immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), which offer authentic simulations for language practice. By addressing these challenges and leveraging opportunities, AI can revolutionize English learning globally, making it more inclusive, accessible, and effective for learners of diverse backgrounds.

Abstract

The immense development of AI, particularly for writing tools, has made it unavoidable for students to become familiar with these technologies. The study investigates using AI writing tools, specifically Canva Magic Write, Quillbot, and Grammarly, in collaborative writing tasks. Eight third-semester students from the English Department at the Faculty of Letters, University of Persada Bunda Indonesia, were selected using a purposeful sampling technique since they have used AI writing tools, including Canva Magic Write, Quillbot, and Grammarly, in Advanced English Grammar and Essay Writing class in the academic 2024-2025 previously. The study employed mixed methods with an explanatory sequential mixed method design, which involved a two-phase data collection process beginning with quantitative data (Questionnaire) and followed by qualitative data (semi-structured interview). The results showed that three AI writing tools - Grammarly, Quillbot, and Canva Magic Write - significantly impact students' collaborative writing experiences. Grammarly improved writing quality, Quillbot enhanced confidence, and Canva Magic Write proved beneficial for idea generation. However, students faced challenges such as restricted access to premium features, issues with source accuracy, irrelevant suggestions, and technical difficulties. Despite these challenges, students expressed satisfaction with Grammarly and Quillbot, while Canva Magic Write received less favorable feedback due to slower performance and outdated sources. The study highlights the importance of understanding students' perceptions and attitudes toward using AI tools for collaborative writing.
