Abstract

Possibility of growth retardant application on tropical turfgrass to substitute or to reduce mowing intensities, while keeping the root growth, was studied. An experiment to study the effect of six level (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 kg/ha in 1,000 l solution/ha) of paclobutrazol application on shoot and root growth was set up.  The result showed that within 10 - 66 days after application paclobutrazol retarded shoot growth. A tolerable visual damage occurred on turfgrass treated with 0.5 - 1.0 kg paclobutrazol/ha and more severe ones occurred when treated with 2.0 or more kg paclobutrazol. One advantage of paclobutrazol application occurred in this experiment was that the root growth was not affected by this PGR application while the shoot growth was suppressed.  Paclobutrazol application changed turfgrass morphology and anatomy. Microscopic observation showed that increment of stem diameter might due to the increment in cell and pith size. Relative size (in diameter) of 10 cells around the pith of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 kg paclobutrazol/ha were 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 respectively.

Abstract

Peanut and kidney bean gave similar response to salt stress showing a more severe growth reduction, as compared to spinach, leaf beet, barley cultivars and wild barley. Calcium showed the protective effect on salt injury in all plants, the effect of which was more pronounced in spinach, leaf beet and both types of barley plant than that in bean and peanut. High concentration of NaCl decreased the content of K, Ca, and Mg in both shoot and root of all plants. Elevated Ca in the nutrient solution, however. Considerably alleviated the inhibition of K uptake due to NaCl. The result suggested that the maintenance of K / Na selectivity by Ca in plant might result in the enhancement of salt tolerance.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of plant growth regulator (Cycocel) and algifert in growth and bulb production of garlic (Allium sativum L.) cv. 'Lumbu Putih'. The experiment was set up randomized complete block design. Treatments were consisted of combination of algifert and cycocel applications. Algifert treatments consisted of spraying 0 (A0), 2 (A1), 4 (A2), 6 (A3) and 8 (A4) ml/l algifert solution on to garlic plants, while cycocel treatments consisted of spraying 0 (C0), 500 (C1), 1000 (C2) and 1500 (C3) Cycocel solution. Algifert spraying was conducted at 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 week after planting, while cycocel was at 8 week and 10 week after palnting. Result of the experiments indicated algifert and cycocel treatments did not significantly affect growth and bulb yield of garlic. However, interaction affect of algifert and cycocel significantly reduced total number of cloves of each garlic bulb. Comparation mean analyzis showed A2C3 (algifert 4 ml/l with cycocel 1500 mg/l) treatment resulted in significantly lower total number of cloves of each garlic bulb than A2C0 or A2C1 (algifert 4 ml/l with or with out cycocel 500 mg/l) treatments, respectively. Treatment combination A2C3 significantly reduced the total number of cloves each bulb. However, the reduction of total number of cloes was not followed by increased in the size of the cloves. The result of the experiment also indicated the presence of positive correlation among parameters recorded. The total weight of harvested biomass were positively correlated with diameter of the bulb, number of clove, dry weight of the bulb, and dry matter contain of the bulb, respectively.

Abstract

Weed constitute one the main problems encountered in urban parks, including those growing on paved park grounds, because in addition to impairing the beauty of the parks they also reduced their function and durability. By weed inventory on park grounds management actions can be planned and conducted Field observation were carried out for two months at the "Monumen Nasional" grounds in Jakarta. Two widely used types of pavement were selected, i.e. conblock and grassblock. The Dominance Value Summed Dominance Ratio were calculated using Tjitro Soedirdjo. Three groups of wide grew in this area, i.e. broad leaves weeds, grasses, and sedges. The species growing on both types of pavement and in both ecological condition are Cyperus rotundus, Eleusine indica, and Euphorbia thymyfolia. Eleven species were identified on shaded and on open conblock respectively. Of these species, nine species grew on both condition, but at varying level of dominance. These are Euphorbia thymifolia, Eleusine indica, Cyperus rotundus, Hedyotis corymbosa, Portulaca oleraceae, Axonopus compressus, Ricahardia brasiliensis, Bacopa procumbens, and Synedrella nodiflora. Eight species were found on shaded grassblock and nine species on open grassblock. Species were found in both condition, i.e. Cyperus rotundus, Eleusine indica, Euphorbia thymyfolia, Chrysopogon aciculatus, and Borreria repens.

Abstract

Intercropping of Maize, Rice and Cassava is commonly practiced by subsistent farmers on upland agriculture in Indonesia. In general, grain yield of rice under intercropping is very much lower than under monoculture crop. This due to the fact that the variety of rice planted under intercrop was breed and selected under elite, monoculture crop condition. Field experiment to screen rice breeding materials planted in association with maize and cassava were carried out in Pekalongan (Lampung), October 1993 - November 1994. Three out of 29 entries of rice were selected, EO2 (B6136-Tb-0-1-5), E20 (Tb47h-Mr-17) and E22 (Tb154c-Tb-1). Performance test on grain yield relative stability for selected materials have to be done, before practicing any form of improvement by means of selection.

Abstract

Two AI-tolerant genotypes (KB 44001 and Genjah Jepang) and two AI-sensitive genotypes of soybean (Kedelai Lumut and KB 46015) were subjected to Al concentration (1.50 mM Al with pH 4.0) in hydroculture for 3 weeks; the growth and their physiological responses were identified by measuring the changes of pH media, NO3ˉ /NH4+ uptake, ion absorption and organic acid content in the tissues. The result revealed that Al-tolerant genotypes soybean show a much better growth than the sensitive genotypes. Moreover, the tolerant genotypes showed the different responses to Al stress; they changed the pH media more significantly, accumulated less Al in the roots and accumulated more oxalate acid than the sensitive genotypes. Both the tolerant and sensitive genotypes had similar pattern n in N03ˉ /NH4+ uptake and other cation uptake. The results suggested that tolerance of soybean genotypes to Al toxicity is associated with their ability in the exclusion AI.

Abstract

The experiment were carried out to determine the effect of N and K on growth, yield and quality of Temanggung tobacco grown intercropped with cabbage at Pujon, Malang. The factorial design with randomized block in five replications were used. Cabbage were planted from February-May, 1992 where as tobacco intercropped in April-September 1993. Three levels of nitrogen from Ammonium Sulphate namely 30 kg N/ha (N1), 60 (N2) and 90 kg N/ha (N3), while Potassium from Potassium Sulphate of 0, 50 and 100 kg K2O/ha were the treatment. Cabbage were fertilization at the rate of 390 kg N/ha and 780 kg P2O5/ha without K fertilization. The first tobacco fertilizations were done at a day after cabbage harvest when tobacco at 16 days old, the half dosages of N and full dosages of K were applied. Other half of N were applied when tobacco at 30 days old. The nitrogen did increase top leaf length, 10 leaf width, fresh yield and N content of Temanggung tobacco of variety of Genjah Kemloko. The potassium did increase quality index and crop index significantly. The N and K interactions is likewise influenced significantly the quality and crop indexes. The maximum leaf length and leaf width were obtained from 90 kg N/ha treatment, whereas highest quality and crop indexes obtained from 30 kg N/ha (N1) and 100 kg K2O/ha (K1) treatments. Highest N content of 3.707% were detected from 90 kg N/ha treatments.

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effect of Si on the growth and ions uptake (K, Na, Ca, and Mg) in rice, bean and barley plants grown in saline conditions. Rice and bean plants were subjected to 0 and 30 mM NaCI in the nutrient solution with and without Si, whilst for barley plants 0 and 40 mM NaCI were used. In this investigation, 2.0 mM Si was used as silicilic acid. The results revealed that Si had the protective effect on salt injury only for rice plants. This alleviating effect of Si appeared to be associated with the interference of Si on the upward Na transport by reducing the content of Na in the shoots and retaining it in the roots. Generally, addition of Si did not affect the content of K in all plants tested. Except for rice, Si had no or less effect on Ca and Mg uptake in bean and barley plants.
