Abstract

Hila Village, located in Leihitu District, has a historical record of a major tsunami event in 1674; however, the geological evidence of this event has not been comprehensively studied. This research aims to identify and characterize paleotsunami deposits in Hila Village and to distinguish them from modern beach deposits and other coastal sediments. The study employed field observations, megascopic fragment analysis, granulometric analysis, and laboratory identification of foraminiferal microfauna. The results indicate that the paleotsunami deposits are characterized by poorly sorted sediments with grain sizes ranging from fine sand to gravel and cobble, erosional basal contacts, mixed lithic fragments, and benthic foraminifera derived from inner to outer neritic environments. Fragment analysis shows dominance of disc and blade morphologies, low sphericity, angular to sub-rounded roundness, and floating clasts within a sandy matrix. The deposits consist of mixed materials, including igneous rock fragments, coral debris, and anthropogenic materials, reflecting rapid high-energy transport and sediment mixing from multiple source environments. These characteristics clearly differ from modern beach deposits, which are generally better sorted, clast-supported, and influenced by repetitive wave abrasion processes.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, strengthening cultural literacy has become an important goal of elementary education. However, cultural literacy learning remains suboptimal due to the limited use of innovative and interactive learning media. This study aimed to develop a cultural literacy-based Pop-Up Monopoly learning media and examine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving the cultural literacy of fifth-grade elementary school students. This Research and Development (R&D) study employed the ADDIE model, consisting of the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation phases. The participants were 55 fifth-grade students from SDN 5 Bendorejo, SDN 1 Kedunglurah, and SDN 2 Kedunglurah, Trenggalek Regency. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, questionnaires, validation sheets, and cultural literacy tests. The developed media obtained validation scores of 92% from material experts, 96% from language experts, 91% from media experts, and 95% from practitioner validators, with an overall average of 93%, indicating that it was highly valid. Teachers and students also provided very positive responses, demonstrating the media's practicality. The average student score improved from 57.4 on the pre-test to 84.5 on the post-test. Furthermore, the Paired Sample t-Test showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05), while the N-Gain value of 65% indicated that the media was effective in enhancing students' cultural literacy. Therefore, the cultural literacy-based Pop-Up Monopoly learning media is valid, practical, and effective for elementary school learning.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement in students' problem-solving skills and the effect of the inquiry learning model on these skills regarding the topic of work and energy in Grade XI at a public high school in Medan. Twenty-first century education requires student-centered learning to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, students' problem-solving abilities remain relatively low, as reflected in TIMSS and PISA results, while physics instruction is still predominantly teacher-centered and emphasizes memorization rather than inquiry and contextual problem solving. The study was motivated by students' low problem-solving abilities in physics lessons—which remain dominated by conventional methods—resulting in a lack of active student engagement in understanding concepts and solving problems systematically. A quasi-experimental method with a two-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The study population consisted of all Grade XI Science students at a public high school in Medan during the 2025/2026 academic year. The sample comprised two classes selected via cluster random sampling: an experimental class receiving inquiry-based instruction and a control class receiving conventional instruction. The research instrument was a problem-solving skills test based on Heller’s indicators: focusing on the problem, describing the physics, planning the solution, executing the plan, and evaluating the solution. Data analysis involved validity and reliability testing, prerequisite testing, and N-gain analysis. The results indicate that the inquiry learning model leads to greater improvement in problem-solving skills compared to conventional instruction. Implementing this model encourages students to be more active in the learning process and think critically, while also enabling them to connect physics concepts with problem-solving in real-life contexts.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the issue of low learning interest among third-grade students at SDN Pandian 1 in understanding the diversity of Indonesia, which is largely caused by conventional lecturing methods that lead to passive learning and boredom. This research aims to describe and analyze in depth the implementation of Indonesian diversity monopoly game media in enhancing students' learning interest. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study design was employed, involving 23 third-grade students at SDN Pandian 1 Sumenep. Data were collected through participatory observation during learning activities, semi-structured interviews with the classroom teacher and student representatives, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed through qualitative processing, descriptive analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings demonstrate that utilizing modified monopoly game media contextually integrated with Indonesian cultural topics significantly increases students' learning interest. This improvement is evidenced by the fulfillment of four key indicators of learning interest: expressions of enjoyment during learning, strong attraction toward visual media and game cards, sustained concentration, and active participation in group interactions. The incorporation of game elements—such as challenge cards, image guessing, and opportunity cards—not only simplifies complex theoretical concepts but also fosters character traits such as honesty, courage, and teamwork among students. Consequently, the modified monopoly game media proves to be an effective and interactive alternative for elementary school teachers to create a dynamic learning environment and elevate students' interest in cultural diversity topics.
