Abstract

Background: The elderly population continues to grow with increased life expectancy, but healthcare services remain insufficient. As a result, many older adults face balance disorders and a higher risk of falls, worsened by limited access to physiotherapy. This community service program aims to train elderly people in efforts to improve their knowledge and skills in managing fall risks using gaze stability exercises taught by physiotherapists. Methods: Participants’ understanding of age-related balance problems improved markedly, with correct responses increasing from 18.3% pre-education to 86.7% post-intervention (a 68.4-point improvement). All participants successfully performed the main gaze stability exercises, although some needed assistance with vergencies. They also reported greater confidence during standing and walking and showed strong motivation to continue the exercises independently at home. Results: Participants’ understanding of age-related balance problems improved substantially, with the average level of correct responses increasing from 18.3% before the education session to 86.7% after the intervention, representing an average improvement of 68.4 percentage points. In addition, all participants were able to perform the main gaze stability exercise components correctly, although several required assistances with vergence movements. Participants reported increased confidence during standing and walking activities and expressed strong motivation to continue the exercises independently at home.  Conclusion: Gaze stability exercise education is a feasible and beneficial community-based physiotherapy approach to enhance balance awareness, confidence, and self-management among older adults. The program is recommended for routine implementation in elderly community health services with support from physiotherapists and local health cadres.

Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains a significant public healt issue, especially in communities with limited acces to early detection and prevention services. In Ciangir Village, low health literacy and limited utilization of health cadres contribute to delayed identification of CKD risk. The aim of the initiative is to empower health workers to enhance their knowledge and skills in the prevention of chronic kidney disease through a smartphone-based educational app, thereby supporting public education and the early detection of risk factors. Methods: The implementation methods include program dissemination, health cadre training, application of the Suster Kita application as an educational medium, as well as mentoring and evaluation. The target of this activity was health cadres in Ciangir Village, Legok District, Tangerang Regency, who then provided education to beneficiary households in their area. The activity was evaluated by measuring knowledge levels using pre-tests and post-tests and assessing the cadres' ability to use the application as an educational medium. Results: The total knowledge score increased from 238 (pre-test) to 256 (post-test), indicating an improvement of 18 points. In addition, cadres demonstrated improved ability to deliver structured health education using digital thechnology. Conclusion: Empowering health cadres through smartphone-based applications shows potential as an effective strategy to improve knowledge and support CKD prevention at the community level. However, further evaluation is needed to assess long-term impact.

Abstract

Background: Food safety is a critical issue in the tourism sector, as handling unsafe food can lead to foodborne diseases and negatively affect public health and tourist satisfaction. Food handlers play an important role in maintaining food safety; however, their knowledge and practice are often still inadequate. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge of food handlers regarding food safety management at Negeri Kahyangan Tourism. Methods: This activity was conducted on November 21, 2025, in Negeri Kahyangan Torism, Wonolelo Village, Sawangan District, Magelang Regency, involving 24 food handlers. This community service included educational sessions and hands-on practice on food safety management, covering personal hygiene, cross-contamination prevention, temperature control, and proper food handling. Evaluation was conducted using pretest and posttest questionnaires consisting of 15 items. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 67.5 (pretest) to 79.72 (post test). The proportion of participants with good knowledge increased from 25% to 54.2%, while those with poor knowledge decreased from 20.6% to 0%. Statistical analysis indicated a significant improvement (p=0.002). However, some misconceptions remained, particularly regarding food handling during illness (66.7% incorrect), waste management (41.7%), and microbial contamination (37.5%). Conclusion: The community service program was effective in improving food handlers’ knowledge of food safety management. However, continuous education and practical reinforcement are needed, especially on critical aspects such as personal hygiene, waste management, and contamination prevention, to ensure safer food handling practices in tourism settings.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus, or ‘sugar diabetes’, is a chronic, lifelong condition. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is caused by genetic factors, insulin resistance, and environmental factors such as obesity, an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, stress and ageing. Therefore, the purpose of this community service activity is to provide physiotherapy counselling in cases of Type II Diabetes Mellitus through physical exercise programs for the elderly at the Elderly Posyandu in Colomadu District. Methods: This community service activity applied an educational and exercise training approach for elderly Posyandu cadres in Colomadu District, Karanganyar Regency, from April to October 2025. The program included health education on Type II Diabetes Mellitus and diabetes exercise training consisting of warm-up, core, and cool-down sessions. Evaluation was conducted through observation of participants’ understanding and exercise performance. Results: The community service project demonstrated a clear transition in participant outcomes. While the initial assessment showed a low level,  post-intervention results showed improved knowledge and practical skills among posyandu cadres regarding diabetes prevention through physical activity, with correct performance of diabetes exercise increasing from 21.4% (3/14 cadres) before training to 92.9% (13/14 cadres) after training.  Conclusion: Diabetes exercise education improved participants’ knowledge and skills in performing appropriate physical activity for managing Type II Diabetes Mellitus. Regular exercise may help control blood glucose levels and improve physical fitness among elderly individuals.
