Abstract

This research aims to determine the influence of the use of English as a language of daily communication on the erosion of Indonesian as a lingua franca, by considering various sociolinguistic and cultural factors. Indonesian is the national language used by Indonesian people to this day. However, the use of Indonesian seems to be starting to be eroded by the use of English which is recently frequently used, especially by teenagers. This raises growing concerns about its potential impact on the erosion of Indonesian, the lingua franca. This study involves the theory of extensive utilization of the English language in various fields and its current status as a global or international language. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Qualitative data were collected through surveys, online forms, and focus group discussions with individuals representing different linguistic backgrounds and levels of English proficiency. The results of this research showed that 96.2% of respondents always use English as their daily language in communication. Apart from that, the use of English had an impact on the use of Indonesian when having a conversation. Researchers also found that even though respondents knew Indonesian as a lingua franca, in fact they used English more by 51.9%. Therefore, this research also seeks to provide input for language planning and language policy making which aims to maintain the national language and preserve the role of Indonesian as an important communication tool in Indonesian society.

Abstract

Violation of language norms committed by an individual can result in sanctions or punishment. The penalties imposed in cases of hate speech may include fines or imprisonment. In the case of Bahar bin Smith and Yulianus Paonganan, there were language violations, particularly in the form of insults, defamation, and tarnishing the reputation of President Joko Widodo. Bahar bin Smith was sentenced to six months and fifteen days, while Yulianus Paonganan was sentenced to one year of imprisonment. Interestingly, in the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Bahar bin Smith’s case, there is no information regarding language violations. This raises questions about how a punishment for language-related crimes can be decided without linguistic evidence. This research is descriptive and qualitative, using a semantic approach to identify forms of hate speech. The linguistic forensic research results highlight the forms, types, and grammatical meanings of hate speech. Furthermore, the research findings indicate that the Supreme Court, in issuing decisions, is not always professional, lacks transparency, and exhibits negligence and carelessness, as evidenced by the issuance of a verdict without linguistic violation evidence.

Abstract

Semiotics studies exist as a reading of the existence of signifier and signified which are currently called signs. Barthes in his method divides the significance of meaning into three stages, namely the denotation stage, the connotation stage, and the myth. These signs also can be found in film posters. The film poster that will be discussed in this research is Budi Pekerti (2023), directed and written by Wregas Bhanuteja. This research uses qualitative research methods. Qualitative methods aim to understand social phenomena seen from the participant’s perspective. The signifier and signified present in the Budi Pekerti film poster certainly produce connotation and denotation meanings that are in line with Barthes’s thinking.

Abstract

This article examines women's identity in marriage culture through the short story Ganti Lapik (GL) by A.A. Navis—an analytical framework using Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism approach. Through analyzing the narratives in literary works, this article explores how cultural norms and women's roles make the other or shape women's identities. The study limit in this research is only on a female character named Dahniar. The stages of this research use qualitative descriptive methods with reading and note-taking techniques. The result of reading and analyzing the work obtained from this research is that Dahniar's character shows a strong woman and a fighter. Dahniar became her person while living in the city. The events that Dahniar went through to reach the peak of her freedom and independent life went through a long process in the social community. Through reading and studying GL's short stories, it can provide an understanding of the struggle of a woman who struggles independently. Literary representations of cultural and women's issues are a treasure that sparks discussion among the general public. This article invites readers to interpret Beauvoir's thoughts in literary works as a means to raise awareness of feminist issues.

Abstract

Jamu made from processed herbal plants has become an alternative treatment option for the Javanese people to prevent and alleviate disease symptoms. Attractive packaging of herbal products can create a positive visual impression, encouraging consumers to try them. This study examines eight jamu packages incorporating elements of Javanese culture, interpreting the meanings they convey. Examples of the analyzed names include Sri Putih, Sari Asih, Sari Asmara, Arum Bulan, Candra Dewi, Sepet Wangi, Super Semar Turmeric Powder, and Candik Ayu. The article also investigates the context behind the use of icons, symbols, and indexes on the packaging. The names of the jamu packages are derived from the Bausastra dictionary, considering the basic meanings used in naming these products. Ultimately, the study concludes that jamu packaging carries symbolic meanings based on Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic method, which suggests to potential consumers the benefits of the products. These symbolic meanings can influence consumers through the icons, symbols, and indices on the packaging.
