Abstract. Debate is one of the means that can be utilized by each presidential candidate to convey the vision and mission. Debates are part of the public's attention to find out the quality of the nation's prospective leaders. The success of conveying the vision and mission and attracting public attention is highly dependent on the language strategies used. This research aims to identify politeness strategies used by presidential candidates in debates and to assess the role of politeness strategies in maintaining the quality of debates and relationships between presidential candidates. The type of research used is qualitative research. The researcher acts as the main instrument and observation guidelines is as supporting instrument in collecting data in this research. The result of study reveals that in the 2024 presidential debate there are three politeness strategies used: positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald on record. However, there are two most dominant politeness strategies used in the debate; positive politeness and bald on record. The both politeness strategies show that all candidates still uphold the principles of politeness in debating, being respectful and harmonious, trying to keep face of their debate opponents and maintaining the quality of clarity and accuracy of opinions conveyed.  The both politeness strategies have a very effective role in in attracting public attention, delivering vision and mission, and maintaining relationship. Keywords: Politeness, Communication, Presidential Candidate Debate

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to investigate culture representation through visual images in a Korean as a foreign language textbook for Indonesian students. It specifically exhibits how cultures are represented through visual images and how they are implicated to KFL learning. Culture and language are closely related, and understanding the cultural values underlying the target language can greatly affect the effectiveness of the learning process. Even though this topic has been the subject of substantial prior research, many have not been explored in the context of Korean textbooks as learning foreign languages. The method used in this study was qualitative using a multimodal discourse analysis. The data were analyzed using the image representation mode of Kress van Leeuwen (KvL). The data were collected from visual images showing cultural identities such as gender roles and ideology, contained in each chapter of the Korea Foundation Level 1 textbook, focused on the speaking (Malhagi) and cultural sections. The results of the data analysis show that cultural representation is dominated by Korean culture in both animated and non-animated images. However, the social role of people's lives represented in the picture corresponds to Indonesia and some pictures are found to be relevant to Indonesia, as the religion of the majority of Indonesians is depicted in the book. Almost all images are illustrated with animated visuals. Male gender is more heavily highlighted than female gender, rendering gender bias. This is related to the Confucian principles that exist in South Korea. Apart from the ulterior motives, the existence of Korean language learning textbooks for Indonesians provides benefits as a multimodal learning medium and helps teachers and students as a support medium for teaching and learning purposes. Keywords: Visual Language, Representation Mode, Multimodal Discourse, Culture

Abstract

Abstract. This study, titled Translation Shifts in The Crown Netflix Series, aims to identify various types of translation shifts and assess the functional equivalence of these shifts within the context of the Netflix series The Crown. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing ten episodes from one season as the primary data. Data collection focused on examining the translated texts accompanying each episode. The analysis is grounded in Catford's theory of translation shifts, which categorizes shifts into two main types: level and category shifts, further subdivided into structure, unit, class, and intra-system shifts. Additionally, the study applies Nida and Taber's functional equivalence theory, distinguishing between formal and dynamic equivalence. The findings reveal 100 level shifts and a significant occurrence of category shifts, with 120 structure shifts, 40 class shifts, 100 unit shifts, and 60 intra-system shifts. Formal equivalence emerged as the most frequently identified type among the translation shifts. The results provide critical global implications for translation practices in media, particularly highlighting the balance between preserving original meanings and adapting content for target audiences across different cultural and linguistic contexts. This research underscores the need for nuanced translation strategies in globally distributed media content. Keywords: Functional equivalence, Qualitative analysis, Translation shifts

Abstract

Abstract. This research investigates Indonesian students' attitudes in EFL classrooms where bilingual focused curriculum is used to teach English to Indonesian EFL students. This study utilized subjective methodology as a fundamental structure of study with a contextual analysis technique. The subject of this investigation were fifty students of Indonesian EFL classroom. The data from poll were examined upheld Likert scale to explore understudies' demeanor and semi-organized meeting to find out the advantages of instructor's bilingual based guidance in educating English. This research demonstrates that understudies have a positive attitude about the instructor's bilingual language work as a language instruction in their English classroom; for workforce students studying English, there are six benefits to the instructor's bilingual language use, including finding it easy to understand what the educator explains in English exercise, feeling comfortable through the classification, and being simple to get a grip on what the educator clarify in English exercise. The results could, in theory, contribute significantly to the development of lone classroom language guidance, which may be used by a teacher in an English learning study hall, especially for showing understudies with a low level of English competence and where English is spoken as a foreign language (EFL). Keywords: Bilingual, Attitude, Teaching English, EFL classroom

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to discuss the symbolic components in Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and their significance in depicting mob mentality. The study examines symbols such as the black box, stones, and lottery ritual to illustrate how they reflect the townspeople's collective psyche as well as Jackson's indictment of societal conformity and blind tradition. Literary analysis approaches and symbolic interpretation frameworks serve as the key tools for this study.  Using semiotic and Jungian psychoanalysis, the study investigates the characters' behaviors and the villagers' subconscious within the context of primordialism. According to the research, conformity, peer pressure, and violence are key to mob mentality, which is motivated by a strong sense of tradition. These findings imply that valuing group identification and tradition over individual morality might result in detrimental practices around the world. Keywords: Mob Mentality, Jungian Psychoanalysis, Semiotics, Primordialism, Psychoanalysis

Abstract

Abstract. Music, as the name suggests, is a cultural product that intersects with human creativity in the realm of entertainment industry. As popular culture and local wisdom collide, music can better portray a particular indigenous society’s characteristics due to the amalgamation of current trends and sacred local values. This study aims to examine the songs of “Lathi” and “Wonderland Indonesia,” interpreting the implicit meanings of any semiotic symbols they contain. The data were obtained from the songs’ music videos published on their official YouTube channels and credible journal articles, utilizing a qualitative-descriptive method and semiotic theory by Roland Barthes. In order to accentuate clarity, this study broke down and mapped out three (3) notable processes such as data collection, data analysis, and data interpretation. The result shows that both “Lathi” and “Wonderland Indonesia” songs’ semiotic signs tend to integrate Indonesian traditional culture with western popular culture. Some evidence include the Indonesian traditional arts (gamelan, wayang kulit, stuffed horse, etc.) and Electronic Dance Music (EDM). In a global context, the songs are intended to embody acculturation between two exceptionally distinct cultures. Despite the widespread of popular culture phenomenon, Indonesians stay committed to upholding nationalism and local wisdom. Let alone the global citizens are more likely to be exposed to Indonesian traditional culture. Keywords: Popular Culture, Local Wisdom, Semiotic, Music, Electronic Dance Music (EDM)
