Abstract

Gender equality in Hindu religious education requires learning practices that provide fair access, participation, control, and benefits for male and female sisya. This study analyzes the transformation of religious practices in Nonformal Pasraman in Mataram City. The study used descriptive qualitative research with a field approach. Primary data were obtained from pasraman administrators, mentors, acarya, and sisya, while secondary data were obtained from curriculum documents, activity schedules, photos, and activity notes. Informants were determined purposively based on direct involvement in pasraman activities. Data were collected through observation, in depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with source, method, and theory triangulation. The findings show that transformation occurred in learning patterns, ritual role distribution, and social awareness. Female sisya began to lead prayers and perform in religious spaces, while male sisya were also involved in supportive ritual skills. The transformation remains uneven because of limited gender literacy, acarya capacity, facilities, parental support, and social habits. Nonformal Pasraman can function as a strategic space for developing inclusive and gender responsive Hindu religious education.

Abstract

The development of globalization and information technology demands that Hindu Religious Education present contextual learning by integrating religious, ecological, and character education values based on local wisdom. The Kasada Ceremony in the Tengger Hindu community has the potential as a learning resource, but its utilization in formal learning has not been optimal. This study aims to analyze the religious, ecological, and character education values in the Kasada ceremony and formulate the Kasada ethnopedagogy model as an innovation in Hindu Religious Education learning. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study design in Ngadisari Village, Probolinggo Regency, East Java. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 informants, participatory observation, and documentation, then analyzed through data condensation, data presentation, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The results show that the Kasada ceremony contains religious values in the form of śraddhā, bhakti, yajña, and gratitude; ecological values in the form of respect for nature, environmental preservation, and ecological responsibility; and character values in the form of mutual cooperation, discipline, responsibility, tolerance, solidarity, and respect for ancestral traditions. The involvement of the younger generation in the Kasada series demonstrates that tradition serves as a space for experiential learning that contextualizes the values of Tri Hita Karana. These findings suggest that Kasada can be developed as a living curriculum that connects cultural experiences with Hindu Religious Education learning. The Kasada Ethnopedagogy model has the potential to strengthen students' religiosity, ecological awareness, character, and cultural identity. Thus, the integration of Kasada into learning is a contextual, holistic, and relevant innovation based on local wisdom that is relevant to the needs of 21st-century education.

Abstract

The transformation of digital communication has reshaped the ways intangible cultural heritage is communicated and represented to global audiences, including spiritual and healing practices rooted in Balinese local wisdom. This study aims to analyze the visual representation of Usada Tapa Brata, a traditional Balinese spiritual and healing practice, in the digital marketing communication of Bali Eling Spirit, and to explain how spiritual meanings are constructed through visual elements, narratives, cultural symbols, and digital experiences. The study employed a qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm using cyber media analysis. Data were collected through observations of Bali Eling Spirit’s digital content, digital documentation, and in-depth interviews with managers and practitioners. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, while the findings were interpreted based on Stuart Hall’s Representation Theory integrated with the concept of digital marketing communication. The findings reveal that the representation of Usada Tapa Brata is constructed through the integration of meditation imagery, Balinese natural landscapes, cultural symbols, reflective narratives, storytelling, and testimonials, which collectively convey meanings of holistic healing, self-discipline, consciousness transformation, and harmony among humans, nature, and the spiritual realm. The findings also demonstrate that digital marketing communication functions not only as a promotional medium but also as a form of cultural representation that translates Balinese Hindu values for broader audiences. This study contributes to the literature on culture-based digital marketing communication by demonstrating the relationship between visual representation, spiritual meaning, and communication strategies in shaping cultural identity within digital spaces.

Abstract

Multicultural communities require leadership capable of transforming religious values into inclusive social practices. This study aims to analyze the transformation of youth leadership based on Hindu values in strengthening multicultural education in Bugis Village, Buleleng, and to formulate a conceptual model explaining this process. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with five key informants, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings show that the internalization of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Tri Hita Karana, Mulat Sarira, and Tri Guna fosters inclusive, relational, reflective, and moral leadership. This transformation strengthens multicultural education through four mechanisms: leadership as a medium of experiential learning, expanded social inclusion, strengthened social capital and community cohesion, and the development of an inclusive religious identity. These findings indicate that Hindu values function not only as spiritual foundations but also as ethical resources and pedagogical mechanisms in a multireligious community. This study proposes Transformative Hindu Multicultural Leadership (THML) as a conceptual model grounded in the case findings that integrates Hindu values, youth participation, and interreligious collaboration to strengthen community-based multicultural education.

Abstract

Dharma Tula at Pasar Intaran provides space and opportunities for the youth of North Bali to improve their social-emotional competencies. Thus, the youth of North Bali possess religious spiritual strength, self-control, personality, intelligence, noble character, and the necessary skills, as well as the development of Hindu educational literacy, which is the foundation of Balinese cultural customs. The aim of this research is to analyze and explain Hindu educational literacy and the process of Hindu educational literacy among the youth of North Bali through Dharma Tula at Pasar Intaran, Buleleng Regency. This research applies qualitative methods within the framework of a case study. The case study application at Pasar Intaran is conducted with the aim of understanding and analyzing the activities and construction of literacy based on Hindu religious education in North Bali. Dharma Tula at Pasar Intaran emerged as a response to the limited space for dialog in formal education and the gap between religious teachings and the realities of young people’s lives. This practice is not designed as an instructional or hierarchical learning activity, but rather as an open dialog space that allows for the equal exchange of ideas. The literacy process using the Dharma Tula format at Pasar Intaran takes place in a circular format. Dharma Tula participants sit in a circle without hierarchical position divisions. There is no single speaker who dominates the discussion; instead, the conversation develops alternately among the participants. The atmosphere of the dialog was relaxed yet reflective, with participants listening to each other before responding. In conclusion, Dharma Tula brings together various social actors in a relatively egalitarian and informal interaction atmosphere.

Abstract

The religious ritual practices of the Kaharingan Hindu community are inseparable from the role of Balian Bawo as spiritual religious practitioners. However, the continuity of Balian Bawo currently faces significant challenges due to the limited interest among younger generations in learning and assuming this role. This study aims to analyze the existence of Balian Bawo and the social actions of the Kaharingan Hindu community in maintaining religious rituals in Dusun Tengah District, East Barito Regency. Previous studies on Balian Bawo have primarily examined regeneration, traditional healing, or artistic aspects separately, whereas the present study focuses on the perspectives of existence and social action to understand the sustainability of Balian Bawo within community life. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that the existence of Balian Bawo is determined not only by the continuity of ritual practices but also by the process of becoming a Balian, community social actions, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. At the individual level, a Balian Bawo is formed through stages of learning, ritual experience, spiritual responsibility, and social recognition. At the community level, their existence is sustained through actions oriented toward values, goals, traditions, and emotional attachment to ritual practices. The primary challenge to the sustainability of Balian Bawo lies not in the disappearance of ritual practices but in the regeneration and transmission of knowledge, which requires direct experience, mentorship from Balian Tuha, and community legitimacy. Efforts to ensure the continuity of Balian Bawo therefore require a collaborative approach through synergy among Balian Tuha, Pasraman, the Kaharingan Hindu Council, Kedamangan, families, and the broader community as spaces for transmitting values, knowledge, and ritual practices.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers new possibilities for supporting learning preparation. In Hindu religious learning for early childhood education, however, its use requires attention to children’s developmental characteristics, cultural and religious contexts, and the teacher’s role. This study aims to analyze the perspectives of prospective Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers on the use of AI as a pedagogical assistant in Hindu religious learning. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through semi-structured interviews with eight prospective ECE teacher students at Institut Agama Hindu Negeri Gde Pudja Mataram, selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed through data collection, condensation, presentation, and conclusion drawing, supported by qualitative coding procedures. The findings show that participants perceived AI as useful for generating ideas and preparing RPPH, learning activities, stories, songs, games, and visual media. AI was also used to support Hindu religious learning related to bhakti, Tri Hita Karana, Tri Kaya Parisudha, and religious practices. However, participants did not directly adopt AI-generated outputs, instead, the outputs were selected, modified, simplified, and validated according to children’s characteristics, learning objectives, curriculum, cultural context, and Hindu religious values. Participants also expressed concerns about potential dependence on AI and reduced independence in developing learning ideas. The study concludes that AI is perceived as a supporting pedagogical resource rather than a replacement for teachers. Responsible use requires human judgment in selecting, adapting, and validating AI-generated content, while teachers remain essential in providing direct interaction, guidance, and exemplary behavior in Hindu religious learning.

Abstract

The phenomenon of performative morality and religiosity in the contemporary public sphere (moral and religious expressions intended for public consumption, rather than the manifestation of inner dispositions) highlights the need for a conceptual framework that distinguishes between ethical appearance and substance. This research develops a thematic-hermeneutic reading of the satya-māyā dialectic in the Mahābhārata, examining how Śakuni and Kṛṣṇa represent two opposing ethical orientations within the relationship between truth and power. This study of the philosophy of religion employs a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach to the dice-playing episode in the Sabhā Parva and selected ślokas from the Bhagavad Gītā, combined with a comparative analysis drawing on political realism. The results indicate that Śakuni represents the instrumentalisation of truth and morality as tools of power, whilst Kṛṣṇa articulates an ethic that subordinates power to satya and dharma through niṣkāma karma. Māyā is understood as an epistemological condition that enables the disjunction between appearance and essence, whilst sattva and lokasaṅgraha form the textual basis for leadership with integrity. Performative morality and religiosity are formulated as new analytical categories that bridge performativity theory with the conceptual structure of the Bhagavad Gītā, characterised by the gap between appearance and essence, the instrumentalisation of symbols, and visibility, accompanied by critical scrutiny of Kṛṣṇa’s controversial actions, without theological justification. The research concludes that the Mahābhārata offers a model of the ethics of power that positions truth as the foundation (rather than a tool) of leadership legitimacy; a thesis that holds internally within the text’s cosmology and is relevant by analogy (rather than empirically) to contemporary public ethical reflection.
