Abstract

This study aims to identify the grammar problems that undergraduate physics students have when writing research abstracts in English. The study uses a mix of methods with a sequential explanatory design. First, it collects numbers through a survey done with 50 students. Then, it does detailed interviews with two students who were picked for a more in-depth conversation. The findings reveal four primary areas of difficulty: tense and verb-phrase accuracy, complex-sentence construction, article and determiner usage, and prepositional collocation errors. Quantitative results show that students have the most difficulty choosing the correct verb phrase, forming relative clauses, determining articles for abstract scientific concepts, and applying technical collocations. Further analysis showed that these mistakes came from not knowing enough about English grammar rules, translating directly from Indonesian, and not being familiar with how academic writing is done in English. The study found that focusing on teaching English for academic purposes, especially in grammar related to specific subjects and how to write clearly and properly in academic style, is very important for helping physics students write better abstracts.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to enhance the pedagogical competence of pre-service English teachers by implementing a Peer-Collaborative Lesson Design (PCLD) strategy in the Learning and Teaching course. The study sought to: (1) analyze the improvement in the quality of Lesson Plans (RPP) developed by students, and (2) investigate the development of students' collaborative skills. Conducted over two cycles at FKIP Universitas Wahidiyah with 30 participants, the study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were derived from pre-test and post-test RPP scores assessed via a validated analytic rubric, while qualitative data were collected through participatory observation, student reflection journals, and focus group discussions. Findings revealed a statistically significant increase in RPP quality, accompanied by notable improvements in learning activity design and assessment alignment. Qualitative analysis revealed a significant shift in collaborative dynamics, from initial task division to sophisticated co-creation and constructive peer feedback. The study concludes that the structured PCLD strategy effectively bridges the theory-practice gap in lesson planning pedagogy and fosters essential collaborative competencies, offering a replicable model for similar educational contexts.

Abstract

The study explores common errors in the generic structure components of recount text in VII-B students at MTs Putra-Putri Lamongan using of 20 students a content analysis approach. The finding indicates the most frequent error is the lack of orientation information, which occurs in approximately 60% of texts, where the students fail to introduce who, when, or where appropriately. In approximately 15% of texts, there is partial orientation. Regarding event sequences, mistakes are standard; 50% of texts have events in the wrong order, and 45% do not use time connectives, which cause the sequence to be unclear. In the re-orientation component, 70% of students leave out the closing reflective comment, tending to finish their recount suddenly, and 10% include poor or general closings. These findings identify priority areas of instructional focus to improve student competency in recount text writing through the significance of well-defined contextual introductions, sequential logic, and reflective conclusions.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Effective customer complaint handling in English is a critical skill in the maritime and tourism industries, particularly in destinations like Labuan Bajo, which contribute up to 5% to Indonesia’s national GDP. This study examines the effectiveness of integrating the teaching factory model at Senja Eatery with traditional classroom learning to enhance the competencies of 15 third-semester Diploma III Hospitality students in the English for Handling Complaints course at Politeknik eLBajo Commodus. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 15 students, two lecturers, and three industry partners through 16 observation sessions, semi-structured interviews, and performance assessments using an ESP-based rubric. Thematic analysis, supported by NVivo, identified patterns of improvement in language fluency, cultural sensitivity, and conflict resolution skills. Findings reveal significant enhancements in students’ confidence and professionalism in the teaching factory setting (average score 4.2/5) compared to the classroom (3.8/5), despite challenges such as limited simulation facilities. The hybrid approach effectively bridges theoretical learning and practical application, preparing students for industry demands. Recommendations include investing in simulation infrastructure, providing lecturer training, and expanding industry partnerships to optimize vocational curricula. This study contributes to the development of responsive vocational education tailored to the needs of the maritime and tourism industries. Abstract

The study participants were 46 first-semester students of the Early Childhood Islamic Education (PIAUD), Islamic Elementary School Education (PGMI), and Islamic Religious Education (PAI) study programs at STIT INSIDA Jakarta who were taking general English courses in the first semester of 2024. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews following interviews with native English speakers. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on the Oxford classification of language learning strategies, including memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. The results showed that students faced several major obstacles, namely limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and low confidence when speaking. To overcome these obstacles, students most often used compensatory strategies, such as paraphrasing, using simple sentences, and body movements. In addition, cognitive and metacognitive strategies were also widely used in the form of question practice, answer planning, monitoring, and evaluating speaking performance. Affective strategies helped students manage anxiety, while social strategies supported learning through interactions with peers and native speakers. These findings suggest that interview sessions with native speakers encourage the use of a variety of language learning strategies that contribute to the improvement of vocabulary and speaking confidence of non- English Department students.
