Abstract

The corona virus that we've been dealing with since December 2019 resulted in unexpected emergency online instruction. Schools and universities were shuttered, face-to-face teaching and learning activities were suspended, and an emergency online teaching policy was implemented. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to identify the strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities of EFL lecturers' implementation of E-learning in EFL online classes during the Covid-19 Pandemic. A questionnaire with open-ended questions was used to collect the data. As a result of E-learning implementation, EFL instructors have become more familiar with CALL, according to the study's findings. Considered to be the drawbacks of the E-learning implementation were an unstable internet connection, a lack of direct interaction between lecturers and students, and the inability of EFL teachers to control their students. In addition, EFL instructors were required to oversee, supervise, and direct the entire assessment procedure. On the other side, English online instruction through E-learning generated chances for EFL lecturers, such as supplying more creative media or making their own instructional video.

By using the pre-experimental method one class pre and post-test, the researcher collected the data by conducting tests before and after giving treatment graphic organizer. After collecting the data and computing the number by using SPSS 23 version, the result showed that: (1) The students' speaking score in storytelling from the pre-test is categorized as low and fair. The highest score is 68 with a mean of score 52.64. (2) The students' speaking score in storytelling from the post-test is good. The highest score is 86 with a mean of score 79.80. Abstract Learning about pronunciation is also learning about stress and intonation. They are aspects of suprasegmental. This research is conducted for the students of English Comprehension Program at Kresna English Institute who have learned about pronunciation in speech. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design because this research describes a setting, an object, or a particular event in detail and depth. The results of this research are: there are still many errors made by English Comprehension program students, especially in the pronunciation program out of a total of 10 students there are many misplaced that vary in each student and also 4 out of 10 students give an increased intonation of some words in sentences or even no intonation made by students or in this case students use flat intonation, thus creating the wrong pattern of contour intonation; and 2) that factors are involved in the production of English suprasegmental features by the students, one of which is the mother tongue of each student who is different, researchers also found that the influencing factor is the awareness of the students in learning this comes from within each student, and researchers also find as the third factor, namely the surrounding environment of students who can form a habit in terms of socializing and communicating; and 3) the method carried out by the teacher seems to be able to improve the ability of students both in terms of pronouncing their word stress and in terms of intonation imitating videos and examples given by the teacher.

Abstract

The rising or decreasing level of politeness impacts the intensity of human behavior. By using the theory of Brown and Levinson's model of politeness and civility theoretical model of Robin Lakoff, this paper aims to describe the Face Threatening Acts performed in public notices in Kediri. This study used the qualitative method because it focuses more on the analysis of written data rather than numbers. This study looks into public notices written by people in public places. The writer uses the theory of Relativism and politeness. The findings show that using more power, being forced, and playing with an adversary can create discomfort. An example can be seen from the public notice “Angel Ngeyel “JOTOS” (English translation: Those who are disobedient will get punched). People who read this notice will feel uncomfortable and it may potentially influence the readers to think and act rudely. It affects people's behavior. Another notice reads “Mlebu kene SETOR NYOWO”, which is about “Zona Rawan Pukul”. This means that people must not enter the village because of the pandemic Covid 19. If they insist to enter the village, they will die or lose their lives. Based on the theory of Robin Lakoff, the notice tends to have declined politeness. This phenomenon is a result of unbridled democracy so everyone feels entitled to talk about anything, the higher frequencies that do not use polite language in the mass media and electronic, and depletion of mutual respect between people. As a result, the behavior of this nation into insolent, and destructive, and the hostility between people are increasingly visible and tend to be light publicly.

This study attempts to find out the mispronounced English consonants and the most commonly mispronounced English consonants by final year English Department students of Jakarta International University. Qualitative descriptive was used in this research with a pronunciation test as the research instrument. In discovering the data, the researchers listened to the audio recording from the participants and transcribed the pronounced English words containing English consonants into IPA symbol systems. The result of this study shows that there are 12 English consonants mispronounced by the 10 students and four of them became the most frequently mispronounced consonants. This study is beneficial for the lecturers and students as a heads-up in being aware of English consonant sounds that tend to be mispronounced even by final year English Department students. This research is also expected to be a reference for future research to fill in the gaps in the research field of English mispronunciation.

Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated the great success of the use of song in teaching listening skills integrated with critical thinking skills. Myriad research has examined the role and the benefits of songs in ELT with monotonous activities. Therefore the study is conducted to bring new insights into it. Five English teachers with more than seven years of teaching experience and have completed teaching critical thinking trainees were selected as the research participants. Since an observational fieldnote was used to obtain the data this study employed a case study as the design. This study discussed the teaching steps of teaching listening skills which used the song as the main material integrated with critical thinking. Several ways revealed by the teacher to activate students’ critical thinking are providing critical questions related to the content of the song and stimulating students constantly to eager them to answer critically. Several strategies adopted by these teachers include: highlighting several words and asking about the meaning, connecting to students' real-world settings, assigning them to make a judgment, and examining the current situation and conditions, These five teachers applied a higher-order thinking style to their teaching and have effectively activated and guided students to think critically.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the benefits of using machine images in improving the writing skills of cadets. Quasi-experimental designed was used by the researcher because the subjects were not randomly assigned. The population was the Polytechnic Bumi Akpelni of Marine Mechanical Engineering Technology Cadets in 2022/2023 academic year. In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The samples consisted of the cadets of Batch 57 semester 3 consisting of two classes. At the beginning of data collection, the researcher prepared the data through a lesson plan, namely the instruction instrument for the writing test and statements for the questionnaire. The teaching phase was carried out to measure whether both were appropriate, pre-test to find cadets' initial abilities and post-the test tests whether the treatment is effective in learning descriptive text. Through data analysis used, namely the scoring system in the form of rubrics, then to see significant differences in scores through studies of normality and homogeneity. From the pre-test result, the average score obtained was 56.66 from the experimental group, while it was 57.77 from the control group. After getting the treatment, the post-test average score of experimental group was 77.77 and control group was 70.10. From the t-test analysis, it was found that t-count was greater than t-table (2.50> 1.55). It indicates that there is a significant difference of the scores from the two groups. Therefore, the researcher concluded that Learned Image Machine is very helpful in improving the ability to write Descriptive Text compared to ordinary teaching without this media.

Abstract

In language classrooms, the use of space has the same potential as language in shaping the pedagogical process. This study analyzes different types of classroom space and how they are used by two teachers to make different meanings. The analysis was carried out by focusing on the positioning of the teachers during lesson stages, namely Openings, Sequencing, and Closings based on the semantic categories of classroom space developed by Lim et al. (2012). The results explicated the use of four different types of space, namely authoritative space, personal space, supervisory space, and interactional space to create learning experience and how they are redefined by the teachers for specific reasons. The findings of this study are expected to provide insight as to how classroom space as one of the semiotic resources is crucial to the pedagogical process and therefore offers a way for teachers to evaluate and transform how they approach their teaching.
