Abstract

Over the last few decades, teaching English become a phenomenon in our country, especially for young learners. English is taught as a main subject in kindergarten and elementary schools. Like any other children, young learners accept new foreign languages easily, but they get bored very fast if the teacher is teaching them using the old conventional methods and techniques. This paper aims to prove that group work is an effective technique used for young learners' vocabulary acquisition. The study used a quantitative method, with a sample of fifth-grade students in SD Wojo Yogyakarta. The population consisted of 48 students, who were divided into a control class and an experimental class. The experimental class is a class that learns vocabulary through group work, while the control class is a class that conducts conventional methods. The collected data were analyzed using a T-test. The T-test score of 1.68 was found to be less than 0.05. This means that there are differences between learning in groups (group work) and traditional methods. Moreover, group work is more effective than traditional methods in improving young learners' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The importance of investigating novice English teachers' experiences cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges they encounter during their initial years of teaching. Past observations have highlighted support as a key strategy for overcoming the difficulties faced by novice English teachers. This study focuses on novice English teachers at a primary school and a language training center in Jakarta Barat area, selected based on their teaching experience of fewer than five years. The main objectives of this study are to identify the challenges they confronted and examine the support they received. The researcher employed reflective journals and interviews to collect information about various difficulties faced by novice English teachers. These challenges encompass aspects of student behavior, foreign language learning and teaching (the lack of learner proficiency in English, insufficient learner motivation and interest, and student parents’ expectations), a large number of students, and other challenges (self-condition, colleague-related, and students' school equipment). Additionally, the study indicates that novice English teachers do receive support during their early teaching years from co-workers, perceived efficacy, and school policy.

Abstract

Writing is the most difficult and complex skill for second language learners compared to other skills. Students need to practice and learn how to write. You can use error analysis to determine how well learners are learning a language. This study aims to identify the types of errors in the use of the future tense on students' writing assignments by the third semester of students Statistic Study Program 2022-2023 at Universitas Bina Bangsa Serang - Banten. This study observed 11 students and used a qualitative descriptive method. This research found that the students made three different types of errors based on Ellis' theory. The most frequent errors that students made were omission errors (24 data or 51%. The following were misformation errors (19 data or 42%) and the lowest were misordering errors (3 data or 7%). Abstract

The rapid technological change has affected education globally, ushering in both positive and negative consequences for teachers. This study focuses on the phenomenon of cyber fatigue among teachers, particularly in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). Hence, it aims to comprehensively investigate the factors contributing to technostress, its effects on the teachers’ performance, and the strategies employed to cope with it, while also exploring the relationships among these variables. A mixed-method approach was employed, encompassing quantitative data collection through an online survey and qualitative insights gathered through interviews. The study involved 34 Indonesian EFL teachers spanning various educational levels. Findings revealed that the absence of a technology-based Teacher Professional Development (TPD) program, coupled with the rapid evolution of technology, heightened anxiety among EFL teachers and significantly impacted their teaching performance. However, the resilience and determination of these educators drove them to employ various coping mechanisms, which helped alleviate technostress to varying degrees. Interestingly, the study discovered that not all variables exhibited positive correlations. Specifically, coping strategies did not appear to be correlated with the factors triggering technostress or its effects, suggesting a complex and nuanced relationship in the realm of technostress management among teachers.

Based on that problem, research was carried out to conduct a learning needs analysis for ESP English learners to determine appropriate learning design recommendations. This research uses a qualitative approach with interviews, observation, and closed-ended questionnaires as data collection techniques. This research shows the most appropriate English learning design for accounting students is to focus on speaking skill. It should be applied in active classes activity; students centered and the role of the lecturer as a facilitator. These elements aim to improve the self-quality of students and prepare them for future career.

Abstract

Framed in Design Based Research (DBR), the authors investigated the target needs and learning needs of the students in developing their English skills at a Marine Hotel Course Institution in Indonesia and developed the appropriate English learning materials for the students. The subjects of the research were 14 students of a Marine Hotel Course Institution in Indonesia. The instruments used in this study were Questionnaires, Field Notes, and Interview Guidelines. The data of this research were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The research findings show that the appropriate English learning materials for the students should be Authentic and consist of three parts: Introduction, Main Activities, and Reinforcement. It shows that the appropriate tasks for the students have six components: goals, input, activity, setting, student role, and teacher role. Based on the research findings, each unit consists of two cycles i.e. oral cycle for listening and speaking skills and written cycle for reading and writing skills. The materials provide language function in the oral cycle, grammar in the written cycle, and pronunciation and vocabulary lessons in both cycles. From the results of the materials evaluation, the mean values of the statements were 3.86 to 4.77. Based on the quantitative data conversion from 0-5, those ranges were in the good and very good categories. Those data were supported by the data from the interview and the observation. It can be concluded that the suggested materials were appropriate and the students were satisfied in using the designed materials.
