Abstract

This research discusses the implementation of hypnoteaching in the teaching and learning process. This research is library research. The analysis shows several steps in implementing hypnoteaching: 1) Giving intentions and motivation. It is related to the teacher mastering the material and continuing to provide meaning to the things that are conveyed. 2) Pacing. Pacing is stepping/equalizing positions, gestures, language, and brain waves between teachers and students. 3) Leading. Leading is directing the class atmosphere to create a conducive and efficient manner, but still feel calm or relaxed. 4) Giving praise. Praise is a self-esteem boost and forms a person's self-concept so it is very important to provide sincere praise to students. 5) Modeling. Modeling is being a role model and setting an example through speech and behavior. Besides, teachers should consider using hypnoteaching including the teacher’s appearance, feeling of sympathy, empathic attitude, language use, demonstration, or issuing self-expression for the kinesthetic, and motivating learners. However, the teacher's proficiency in using hypnoteaching depends on the extent to which the teacher uses, applies, and practices their knowledge in the learning process. Hypnoteaching places more emphasis on the abilities of the subconscious brain than the student's conscious brain. By using hypnoteaching, teachers can create a variety of learning processes, the learning process will run dynamically, there is good interaction between teachers and students, students are more motivated to learn and understand the learning material, students enjoy learning activities, also there are positive suggestions for the subconscious language used by teachers.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to identify the types of conjunctions in abstracts of English and mathematics thesis written by undergraduate students at Universitas Qomaruddin's English and mathematics departments. It demonstrates the similarity of conjunction usage in abstracts. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design to look at 50 abstracts drawn from 25 English thesis abstracts and 25 mathematics thesis abstracts. By using the conjunction taxonomy developed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014), the conjunctions in the abstract are categorized and then analyzed. The analysis's findings displayed that all abstracts use the three types of conjunctions—elaboration, extension, and enhancement. In the English department, in elaboration type found 8-word items with 5 variants. Extension type found 214-word items with 7 variants. Enhancement type found 87 words with 14 variants. However, the elaboration type found 12-word items with 2 variants in the mathematics department and extension type 244-word items with 5 variants. Enhancement type found 69-word items with 14 variants. The use of conjunctions in abstract of English and mathematics thesis shows many similarities to the selection and the amount of its use. These abstracts contain a few specific conjunctions but none of the others. Extension conjunctions—particularly those that are positive additives and use the word item "and"—are frequently used in both types of abstracts. The use of conjunctions varies, according to the study's findings. The incorrect use of conjunctions demonstrates the difficulty with writing that EFL learners have. The use of conjunctions in both types of abstracts is similar, demonstrating that students are speaking the same language. For that reason, it is expected that students can apply more variations in their academic writing.

Abstract

The use of politeness by teachers and students in classroom interactions is one of the pragmatics subjects that have drawn a lot of attention. Although considered under-researched, politeness remains one of the most interesting topics, including in Indonesia. This study investigates the politeness strategies used by students from different countries during the learning process with a native Indonesian tutor. A mixed-method approach was used: qualitative method mainly described the politeness strategies, meanwhile a quantitative approach was used to determine the distribution of each type of strategy. The participant was one English teacher, an Indonesian native speaker, and nine students from three different countries, i.e., China, India, and Indonesia. Data collection was conducted using video recordings, followed by a structured process of analysis which involved transcription of the recorded interactions, coding key linguistic and behavioral elements, classifying them based on identified themes, and conducting a detailed analysis. The findings showed that only three politeness strategies were employed within the teacher-student interaction, i.e., Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, and Negative Politeness. Meanwhile, the Off-Record strategy was not used, possibly due to the need for direct and clear communication in the classroom setting, where avoiding ambiguity is crucial for effective instruction and language learning. The study suggests that teachers and students can use the study's findings as a reference to enhance their interactions.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to enhance students' oral proficiency through the use of the simulation technique. The research was conducted using classroom action research based on the Kemmis and Taggart model. The research participants were 30 English majors. This research demonstrates that integrating simulation into language teaching can yield measurable improvements in students' speaking proficiency, providing educators with a practical tool for enhancing oral communication skills. The findings revealed a substantial enhancement in their speaking abilities. The mean pre-test score rose from 58.1 to 67.8 (a 16.7% increase) in the first cycle and further improved to 85.2 (a 25.7% increase) in the second cycle, resulting in a total improvement of 46.6%. These results suggest that implementing the simulation technique can effectively enhance students' speaking skills, as demonstrated by the significant gains in mean scores and overall performance across the research cycles.

Abstract

This study analyzed students’ academic writing projects using thematic progression analysis. The investigation aimed to identify the thematic progression development patterns commonly used in students’ writing projects and to understand how these patterns relate to overall writing quality. Using the qualitative method, this study described the analysis of student’s writing projects from the thematic progression point of view. The data of the study were six writing projects, which were analyzed and categorized into some patterns so that the level of coherence could be seen. As the result, the data of writing projects showed that they used three dominant patterns, namely reiteration, multiple, and zig-zag. The second discovery found that all of the academic papers were categorized as less coherent, indicating that the respondent often introduced new themes in the middle of paragraphs, disrupting the flow of ideas and making it difficult for readers to follow the main argument. After conducting the research, researchers suggested that lecturers should strengthen students’ ability to develop coherent paragraphs by providing explicit instruction on thematic progression patterns, encouraging students to practice various patterns, and providing feedback on the coherence of their writing.

Abstract

This study examines the anxiety experienced by ESL teacher-interns in Indonesia, specifically those teaching English in primary and secondary schools, and how this anxiety impacts their teaching. As they are still in the process of learning to teach, many teacher-interns feel nervous using English in the classroom. This anxiety can hinder their ability to deliver lessons effectively and engage students. Using a qualitative research approach, the study collected data through interviews with four teacher-interns from different school levels. The findings reveal that anxiety stems from four key factors: lesson preparation, classroom conditions, lack of confidence, and physical health. Many teacher-interns struggle with managing students, planning lessons, and maintaining confidence in their English skills. Large class sizes and student behavior further contribute to their stress. Additionally, some interns fear making mistakes, and teaching becomes even more challenging when they are tired or unwell. The study underscores the importance of improved training, mentorship, and emotional support to help teacher-interns build confidence and enhance their teaching effectiveness.
