Abstract

The phenomenon of androgyny in Korean pop culture (Hallyu) has garnered significant attention in Indonesia, particularly within the K-Pop Dance Cover community, which evidently incorporates the androgynous trend into cross-cover activities or imitations of K-Pop idols through cross-dressing actions. This research aims to explore how Glacies Crew, a K-Pop Dance Cover cross-dresser community based in Malang, East Java, understands and interprets gender fluidity through the androgynous trend in its performative concept, specifically in the medium of cross-dressing. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with deep interview data collection techniques, participatory observation, and document analysis. The selection of the Glacies Crew community as the research target is determined through purposive sampling. The research findings reveal that Glacies Crew members actively engage in androgynous performativity and express gender fluidity in their daily lives. Through preparation, practice, and performance processes, community members simultaneously adopt and internalize feminine and masculine characteristics, creating diverse and dynamic gender identities. The research findings also highlight the challenges faced by community members in negotiating their gender identities within a broader society. However, the support and solidarity within the community empower members to confront these challenges. This research contributes to academic discourse on gender fluidity and non-normative gender identities in the context of Indonesian popular culture. The study underscores the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces for individuals and developing effective interventions to reduce stigma and discrimination against individuals with non-normative gender identities.

Abstract

The middle class was born from the dichotomy of conflict between capitalists and workers. This middle class is faced with the fact that they are faced with vertical and horizontal class interests. On the one hand, they are faced with pressure from capitalist groups, while on the other hand, they are faced with proletarian class competition. In addition, the middle class is prone to stuttering transformation between the sacred (religion) and profane (industry) areas. This study reads a phenomenon of inequality in the transformation of a religious-industrial middle class group in Penampon Village, Pasuruan. This study aims to provide a theoretical interpretation of the social phenomena that occur. While as a practical goal, this study attempts to provide a scientific explanation to be used as reading material for the general public to become a reflective value. The type of data method used is observational and qualitative data description. Data sources were obtained through interviews with several informants. From this study, several conclusions were found, First, conflict must arise from interests, both vertical (bourgeois-proletarian) and horizontal (between bourgeois groups and between proletarians). Second, the religious-industrial middle class thinks about two separate latent problems, namely the problem of slow religious transformation and the rapid industrialization project. Third, the power can be born from the truth project. The truth project is latent and produced by the power holders who are based on their superior capital.

Abstract

The advent of modernization has led to the gradual neglect of local traditions, as people today are more focused on technological advancements and modern lifestyles, which are considered more practical and efficient. The Jamasan tradition in Dawuhan Village, Banyumas Regency, is a significant part of the local community's life, where villagers gather to clean sacred heirlooms and preserve ancestral values. However, with the passage of time, villagers spend more time with technology and other modern activities, causing cultural heritage like Jamasan to be sidelined. This research aims to identify how revitalization and strategies are applied to ensure the sustainability of the Jamasan tradition so that it remains relevant in the modern era. The researcher applied purposive sampling techniques to select informants who met the research criteria. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and literature studies to gain a comprehensive understanding. The research findings reveal efforts to increase community participation in the Jamasan tradition through a series of events called Kalibening Culture Heritage. These activities include various traditional art performances, such as stage performances and religious events, which encourage active community participation. The strategy to enliven this event includes promotion on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As we know, people are inseparable from their gadgets, making social media dissemination an appropriate strategy. These activities have increased the interest of the younger generation and village residents in appreciating and preserving their cultural heritage

Abstract

The Tea Pai procession has become one of the 13 essential wedding ceremonies in the Thiong Hua ethnic group, considered significant and irreplaceable despite the evolving times. This ceremony involves the immediate and extended families of the bride and groom, where respect, gifts, and well-wishes for the marriage are always present in the Tea Pai. This research delves deeper into the meaning behind this procession in terms of values, symbols, and communication. These three aspects are examined from the perspective of basic human values developed by Schwartz. The study employs a literature review method covering at least the past 10 years, integrating findings and perspectives from various empirical studies conducted previously.

Abstract

The concept of soft masculinity presents a new dimension of male masculinity with feminine characteristics, often associated with women. This research examines the phenomenon of soft masculinity in the music video Candy by NCT Dream. The music video represents a different concept of masculinity compared to traditional masculinity, showcasing male characters with delicate gestures and various attributes typically associated with women. For adherents of traditional masculinity, such as those in Indonesian society, this is often perceived as a violation of social norms. The Candy music video, as a medium of communication and entertainment, is considered capable of influencing the cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of society in accepting this unconventional portrayal of masculinity. Through a qualitative approach using Stuart Hall's reception analysis method, this study focuses on the reception of male NCT Dream fans toward this new cultural phenomenon. The findings indicate that informants who accept soft masculinity in their daily lives are influenced by their cultural and social environment, particularly regarding exposure to K-Pop culture. Meanwhile, rejection of the message adaptation is largely driven by the entrenched social norms within society, requiring men to negotiate the meaning of the message or even reject it outright
