Abstract

Family, in anthropological studies, is understood as a social institution where roles, values, and identities are constructed through everyday interactions. In this context, birth order is often associated with psychological approaches, particularly the concept of middle child syndrome, yet studies that examine it within socio-cultural family dynamics remain limited. This study aims to analyze how birth order shapes the position, roles, and experiences of middle children within family relations in Desa Sayang, Jatinangor. This research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, involving five middle children aged 14–25 years from families with three children, as well as seven family members as supporting informants selected using a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation, and analyzed thematically through stages of data selection based on the research focus, coding, categorization into themes, and interpretation to identify patterns of experiences and relational dynamics within the family. The findings reveal that the position of middle children is not solely determined by biological birth order, but is constructed through the negotiation of roles, communication patterns, and the distribution of attention in everyday family life. In this process, middle children develop adaptive strategies by positioning themselves as relational balancers within the family. Although some experiences resemble characteristics commonly associated with the middle child syndrome, such as feeling less prioritized, these experiences are better understood as part of the social dynamics of family relationships rather than as an independent psychological condition. This study concludes that birth order functions as a relational structure embedded in socio-cultural family practices, which contextually shapes the identity and experiences of middle children.

Abstract

Urban farming in urban areas has emerged as a response to the increasing limitation of space caused by rapid urbanization, which has led to land-use conversion and various environmental problems. In addition to serving as an effort to fulfill food needs, urban farming has also become part of the community's eco-social life pattern through the integration of social activities and environmental awareness. This study aims to analyze urban farming and eco-social life patterns among the Women Farmers Group in Surabaya Village, Bandar Lampung City. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an ecological approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed according to the research objectives. The results show that urban farming not only functions as a means of meeting food needs but also shapes the community's eco-social life patterns. This practice strengthens cooperation, increases social interaction, and fosters collective awareness of environmental conservation. These eco-social life patterns are reflected in the productive use of land, active participation of group members, and collective efforts to preserve the environment. Urban farming serves as a social space that integrates human activities with ecological concerns in urban community life. The study concludes that urban farming plays an important role in enhancing solidarity, mutual cooperation, and environmental awareness, while also encouraging environmental conservation practices to achieve a better and more sustainable quality of life.

Abstract

Marriage during the month of Molod (Rabiul Awal) is consistently avoided by the majority of the Kacongan community in Sumenep, Madura, despite the absence of explicit Islamic sharia prohibitions. This study examines how these taboos are formed as social realities, maintained as living law, and dialectically conflict with normative Islamic law. The research method used is qualitative with a sociological legal approach and field research, through observation, interviews, and documentation, supplemented by marriage statistics at the Religious Affairs Office (KUA) in Sumenep City District from 2023–2025. The findings indicate that the taboos are formed through historical-religious narratives, myths, and the Javanese-Madurese primbon knowledge system. Public perceptions are diverse; traditional leaders support them culturally and empirically, religious leaders reject them theologically and normatively, while the general public tends to comply pragmatically. KUA data confirms that the marriage rate in the month of Molod (Rabiul Awal) is consistently below 4% compared to the month of Dzulhijjah, which reaches more than 20% annually. Analyzed through the theory of the Social Construction of Reality by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann and the concept of Living Law by Eugen Ehrlich, these taboos constitute a socially constructed and binding legal reality outside the formal legal system. The dialectic between customary living law and Islamic law occurs in a real conflict. However, this conflict does not become an open conflict between communities, but rather a dynamic dialectic in which the two normative systems confront each other without either completely displacing the other.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ perceptions of the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) at SD Negeri 005 Samarinda Seberang. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving students as research subjects selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of the MBG program had generally been carried out well according to procedures, starting from food distribution, organoleptic testing, eating activities, and waste management. Students mostly gave positive perceptions because the program helped them obtain nutritious food, increased learning enthusiasm, and fostered healthy eating habits. Students’ perceptions were influenced by physiological factors, attention, interest, needs, experiences, mood, stimulus, and situational factors. In addition, the program also had positive impacts on health, learning concentration, social interaction, and students’ psychological conditions. Therefore, the MBG program is considered beneficial in supporting students’ health and learning processes.
