Abstract

In the health sector, the use of polyurethane (PU) as a basic material for medical devices still causes problems related to local and systemic infections. One of the most appropriate ways to overcome this problem is to synthesize PU biopolymer with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. The use of nano-shaped materials in this synthesis has many advantages, including being easier to synthesize and being antibacterial. Meanwhile, starch is the result of isolation from banana weevils, where banana weevils are agricultural waste that has not been utilized properly. Particle size and the use of agricultural waste are a form of modification and innovation in PU synthesis, as well as a novelty in the development of this research. In PU synthesis, several characterization techniques are carried out, including polymer tests, namely strain and stress, functional group analysis using (Fourier Transform Infra-Red), and antibacterial tests. Based on the results of the FTIR test analysis, it show that at a wave number of 1724.36 cm-1, the N-H functional group is visible, and the absorption of urethane and TiO2 groups is in the range of 513.07 cm-1. The mechanical properties test shows the strain (28.92 - 21.88% GL) and young's modulus in the interval (5.484-3.268 MPa). The antibacterial test showed that the inhibitory power of test samples A1 and A4 with diameters of 8 mm and 8 mm proved to be very effective in killing E. Coli bacteria, while test samples A1¹, A2¹, A3¹, and A4 were not able to kill E. Coli bacteria. S. Aureus. bacteria. The characterization results show that PU biopolymer can be used as a basic material for making bacterial decontaminant medical devices.

Abstract

Various cases of accidents and occupational diseases, as well as other health problems are often caused by unqualified work environment factors, Workers in a hot environment are one of the causes of workers experiencing occupational diseases. Heat strain is an acute or chronic impact caused by exposure to heat stress experienced by a person from physical and mental aspects. The physical impact caused by heat strain ranges from mild complaints such as skin rashes to fainting to life-threatening situations when there is a cessation of sweating and heat stroke. Tofu making is one of the hot working environments. This study uses a quantitative method with a sampling technique using a purposive sampling technique. The sample in this study is 44 tofu makers. The data collection technique uses questionnaires and pulse measurement. Data analysis uses the Spearman Rank test. The results showed that there was a relationship between drinking water consumption and heat strain activity with a value (p = 0.000), there was no relationship between BMI (p = 0.113) and there was a relationship between workload and heat strain incidence (p = 0.000) and heat strain complaints in tofu factory workers. It is expected that workers consume >11 glasses of drinking water and use clothes that can reflect heat such as wearing thin clothes, wearing loose shirts and easily absorbing sweat.

Abstract

The development of bioplastic films is one of the efforts to reduce plastic waste. The polymer used as the basic material for making bioplastic films is starch. Potato peel waste can be repurposed by extracting its starch content. This research has the purpose to investigate the influence of adding glycerol and spirulina on the characteristics of bioplastic films made from potato peel starch, and to ascertain the optimum composition of raw materials. Bioplastics were produced by casting method from potato peel starch with variations of glycerol and spirulina. The bioplastic composition in this research includes K0 (0 ml glycerol and 0 grams spirulina), K1 (2.5 ml glycerol and 0.3 grams spirulina), K2 (1.25 ml glycerol and 0.3 grams spirulina), K3 (2.5 ml glycerol and 0.15 grams spirulina), and K4 (1.25 ml glycerol and 0.15 grams spirulina). The characteristics of bioplastic films include thickness testing, tensile strength, elongation at break, and degradation. The results from the characterization of bioplastic films indicate that the addition of glycerol and spirulina is inversely proportional to the tensile strength produced, meaning it decreases. However, the addition of glycerol and spirulina is directly proportional to the percentage of elongation produced, meaning it increases. The addition of spirulina has an impact on the degradation time of bioplastic films. The optimal raw material ratio in this research is found in sample K4, with a tensile strength value of 23.038 MPa, elongation at break of 4.385%, thickness of 0.1367 mm, and complete degradation occurring on the sixth day.
