Abstract

This research addresses the need to enhance critical thinking skills in junior high school students through effective instructional design, particularly in the context of learning news texts. The study is based on the premise that problem-based learning (PBL) can significantly improve students' critical thinking by engaging them in real-world problem-solving scenarios. Given the growing emphasis on critical thinking as a core educational objective, it is essential to develop instructional models that not only teach content but also foster higher-order thinking skills. The primary aim of this research is to design an instructional model for teaching news texts in junior high school and to assess its validity and effectiveness. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, utilizing the ADDIE model, which involves five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Following the development of the instructional design, it underwent validation by both learning experts and practitioners. The validation process yielded high scores, with learning experts rating it at 95.83% and practitioners at 88.89%, resulting in an overall average validity score of 92.36%, categorizing the design as highly valid. In practice, the problem-based learning model was implemented in classrooms, and its impact on students' learning outcomes was evaluated. The students achieved an average learning score of 86%, indicating the instructional design's effectiveness in delivering content. Furthermore, the assessment of students' critical thinking skills showed an average score of 79%, placing it in the "good" category. These findings suggest that the PBL-based instructional design is effective in not only teaching news texts but also in enhancing students' critical thinking skills, making it a valuable approach for junior high school education.

Abstract

In the context of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, a new phenomenon has emerged among social media users: the creativity in making memes. These memes, which can take the form of text or images, address issues and events in an evocative style, becoming widely discussed due to their rapid dissemination and commentary on social media. This research aims to describe the signifiers and signifieds in memes related to the 2024 Indonesian presidential and vice-presidential candidates, elucidate the meanings contained in these memes, and explore the connection between memes on social media and the representation of public perception. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design by employing semiotic analysis. The markers in these memes include snippets of cartoon and film scenes. The allusions in the memes align with the reality of the Indonesian 2024 presidential and vice-presidential candidate debates. These memes convey statements that contain information and public perceptions regarding the behavior, attitudes, and outcomes of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates. The results indicate that public perceptions are represented in the memes of the 2024 presidential candidates, encompassing expressions, perceptions, criticisms, humor, and satire. Furthermore, signifiers and signifieds are identified in each meme. This study reveals that memes play a crucial role in reflecting and shaping public perceptions during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. Through creative expressions of humour, criticism, and satire, memes capture and communicate public sentiments about the candidates, highlighting their influence as a powerful tool in modern political discourse and public engagement.

Abstract

Writing skills are crucial to basic language skills. However, observations in the field indicate that students' descriptive text writing skills are still low, especially in the aspect of content or ideas. This limitation makes it difficult for students to develop ideas, so the text does not provide enough information and description of the object.  With this problem, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the virtual media field trip to Borobudur Temple, assisted by songs, in stimulating descriptive text writing skills. This quantitative research uses a quasi-experimental method and a nonequivalent (pretest-posttest) control group design. The research sample consisted of 52 students, with IV A as the experimental class and IV B as the control class, with each class totalling 26 students. The sampling technique used nonprobability sampling with saturated sampling. In the experimental class, special treatment was given, a virtual field trip to Borobudur Temple with the help of songs. In contrast, the control class only used conventional media such as pictures. Research data was collected using test techniques pretest and posttest. Then, the data analysis techniques using independent sample t-test, with the results in Sig. (2-tailed) 0.00<0,05 showing a significant influence of the virtual field trip media at Borobudur Temple assisted by songs on descriptive text-writing skills. This learning media is effective for stimulating descriptive text writing skills because it can inspire students to develop ideas based on virtual field trips and increase vocabulary through song lyrics to be translated into descriptive text.

Abstract

Think-pair-share is a collaborative learning strategy where students think individually about a topic, pair up to discuss their thoughts, and then share their ideas with the larger group. This model encourages active participation, critical thinking, and effective communication. One effective medium is audiovisual media, which combines both visual and auditory elements to create a more engaging learning experience. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of think-pair-share (TPS) learning model assisted by audiovidual media on speaking skills. To attain the research purposes, the study is designed in experimental study with using one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this research is class The sample in this research was class X E.2 students, totaling 35 people. The instruments of this research were speaking skills tests. To analyze this data, the researchers utilized SPSS software. To ascertain the significant impact of the learning model assisted by audiovisual media, the researchers employed the t-test analysis. Based on the data analysis, the mean score of students’ indonesian speaking skills assissted by audiovisual in pretest is 68.97 and in posttest is 84.16. The TPS learning model has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in enhancing students' speaking skills and overall language proficiency. The stages create a dynamic and supportive learning environment that fosters individual cognitive development and promotes active communication. By encouraging students to first reflect on their ideas, then discuss them with a peer, and finally articulate them in front of the larger group, TPS not only builds confidence in verbal expression but also reinforces essential language competencies such as fluency, active listening, and critical thinking.

Abstract

Indonesian has become the official language of the UN. Many BIPA students want to learn Indonesian online. However, online learning creates obstacles such as time differences between teachers and BIPA students, internet connections, and providing less than optimal feedback. This research aims to develop m-learning with automatic feedback for BIPA level 2 learners. This research uses a 4D development model: define, design, develop and deploy. This study's instrument is  a questionnaire distributed to 2 validators and 18 BIPA learners. The results of this study are m-learning products that minimize internet connections; once installed, students only need to be connected to the internet when working on questions. In addition, m-learning is also equipped with automatic feedback that appears immediately after students answer questions. The results of the product trial show that students can use m-learning to learn anytime and anywhere, including in areas with minimal internet access. Automatic feedback in m-learning also helps students learn independently because they do not need to wait for feedback from teachers. The automatic feedback in M-learning is only for listening and reading questions while speaking and writing questions are still in the form of answer keywords or assessment rubrics that the teacher must correct. Based on expert validation and product trials with an average score of 88.8, we conclude that the development of m-learning is suitable for BIPA level 2 students.

Abstract

Encouraging students to repeatedly read and listen to resources can be challenging for language teachers. Although students understand that reading and listening are essential for language acquisition, few spend their free time engaging in these activitiesStudents often remain passive and hesitant to read or listen to English texts on their own due to a lack of understanding of the additional benefits, insufficient guidance on choosing appropriate texts for their proficiency level, and ingrained habits. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the impact of the Online Extensive Reading and Listening (OERL) program on students' reading and listening comprehension. Additionally, it sought to assess the variations in students' performance following exposure to the OERL intervention. This quasi-experimental research utilized a pretest-posttest design, involving sixty eleventh-grade students from a senior high school in Banjarbaru, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved administering reading and listening comprehension tests, and MANCOVA test was employed for data analysis. Results indicated a significant positive impact of the OERL program on enhancing students' reading and listening comprehension. Furthermore, noteworthy differences were observed in the reading and listening achievements of students exposed to the OERL program compared to those receiving intensive reading and listening with teacher-selected texts, with a significance level of 0.000. In essence, the OERL program proved valuable in improving students' reading and listening comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to interpret the effect of the application of the Cooperative learning model type Team Game Tournament assisted by Kahoot application and learning motivation on learning outcomes on the material of writing official letters and personal letters of SMP Negeri 02 Gunung Talang students. This research is classified as experimental research with a population of 355 students and a sample of 64 students. Data on learning outcomes were obtained through objective question tests on the material of writing official and personal letters, while learning motivation data were obtained from distributing learning motivation questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted manually and using the IBM SPSS Statistics 27 application. Based on the results of the analysis, the Team Game Tournament type Cooperative learning model assisted by Kahoot application was proven effective in improving student learning outcomes significantly compared to the Conventional learning model. This is evidenced by tcount> ttable (df = 62; α = 0.05), namely 8.444> 1.66980 and Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05 then H0 is rejected. These findings indicate that the application of the Team Game Tournament type Cooperative learning model assisted by the Kahoot application can significantly improve student learning outcomes. In addition, the results showed that students' learning motivation, both high and low, did not significantly affect learning outcomes in the context of using the Cooperative learning model of Team Game Tournament type assisted by Kahoot application. The analysis also showed no significant interaction between the learning model and students' learning motivation, with an interaction F value (FoA*B) = 0.013 and p-value = 0.908. Thus, the effectiveness of the Team Game Tournament type cooperative learning model assisted by Kahoot application was consistent across various levels of student learning motivation, both high and low. This finding indicates that the learning model is effective for all students regardless of their learning motivation level.
