Abstract

This research analyzes the phenomenon of amelioration on concrete nouns in the novels Layar Terkembang by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana and Sitti Nurbaya by Marah Roesli. Amelioration is the process of changing the meaning of a word that leads to a more positive connotation. The purpose of this study is to identify the forms of amelioration, the positive connotations formed, and how these changes in meaning reflect the social and cultural context of colonial Indonesia. The research method used is corpus linguistics with documentation techniques through the KORTARA (Korpus Nusantara) application to identify frequency patterns and word collocation in literary texts. The results showed that there were 57 words undergoing amelioration that reflected changes in social views, culture, and religious values. For example, the word "khalikulalam" in Sitti Nurbaya's novel has undergone improvements, a shift in meaning that increases its value and respect; The word "virgin" in the novel Layar Terkembang carries a more subtle and respectful connotation, describing a young woman who is seen not only by her status but also associated with beauty, purity. The words not only have basic meanings, but also additional connotations that symbolize respect, sanctity, spiritual power, and cultural pride. The amelioration of these concrete nouns shows the changes in colonial society's perspective towards social roles and cultural values in daily life. The findings support the theory that amelioration is closely related to broader social dynamics, where words with high moral and cultural values tend to experience an increase in meaning. This research is expected to contribute to the study of Indonesian linguistics and semantic education, as well as add to the understanding of the interaction between language and social values in society.

Abstract

Research on speech acts has been extensively conducted by scholars; however, studies specifically focusing on prohibitive speech acts, especially regarding the forms and functions of local wisdom values within these acts, are still quite rare. This research is aimed at exploring the forms and functions of local wisdom values in the prohibitive speech acts of the Kerinci community. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method which involved ten informants from Pondok Tinggi Village and Sungai Penuh Village, Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province. The data were collected using observation, note-taking, and recording for two months. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using an interactive model. The results show that the forms of local wisdom values in the prohibitive speech acts of the Kerinci community were prohibitive speech acts with consequences and without consequences. These prohibitions encompass local wisdom values across moral, respectful behaviour, health, safety, social harmony, responsibility, ethics, and environmental stewardship. Moreover, the functions of local wisdom values in the prohibitive speech acts in the Kerinci community serve as a means of behaviour control and convey local wisdom values that support moral education and environmental preservation. Furthermore, the functions emphasize the importance of integrating local values into education to enhance community awareness of the environment and social relationships. Thus, integrating these local values into educational contexts could foster community awareness of environmental and social responsibilities, supporting cultural preservation and reinforcing the importance of these values for future generations.

Abstract

Translating news reports can hardly be free from subjectivity, especially in relation to a conflict, since the opposing ideology often creates friction that necessitates translators to assume complex and multifaceted roles. The concept of positioning refers to participants’ attitudes or stances toward the event or other participants in the event which significantly influences the interpretation of a text. The objective of this study is to examine the positioning regarding Hamas in a parallel corpus-based Israel-Palestine conflict. The corpus comprises 160 articles that have been translated from English to Indonesian. The researcher applied the evaluative model proposed by Pan and Liao (2020), that integrated CDA (Fairclough, 2013), Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005), and Narrative Theory (Baker, 2006). It was found that the translators intentionally and carefully (re)positioned of Hamas by implementing a discursive strategy called redacted labelling in their actual activities. This can be done by omitting, adding, softening, and even strengthening the word construction embedded in these elements. The activities were motivated by the political stance of the news organization as determined by its official identity, media discourse counterpoints, the situation of the political of Indonesia toward the conflict, and their expectations of the reaction of the target audience. Examining news translation using CDA adds to translation theory by providing a critical perspective on how non-linguistic elements like ideology, power, and culture influence the translation process. It provides a more in-depth understanding of the translator's position as an agent who translates meanings, values, and worldviews as well as words.

Abstract

A learner's EFL learning can be affected by various factors, one of which is socio-economic status (SES), with most Indonesians belonging to the middle SES. This study employs a case study approach and semi-structured interviews to explore the barriers faced by middle SES Indonesians in EFL learning and the potential support mechanisms. The findings reveal three key themes: support from surroundings, access to learning resources, and self-efficacy. Support from surroundings and resource access are interrelated external factors, highlighting the importance of ease of access in the learning environment. Conversely, self-efficacy reflects learners' internal beliefs in their ability to succeed in EFL. The study suggests several support mechanisms, such as providing equitable opportunities for practice, enhancing access to learning materials, and fostering a supportive educational environment. Resources like visual aids, culturally relevant materials, and free language platforms can significantly benefit not only middle SES learners but others as well. Despite these insights, the study has limitations, including reliance on interviews and a small participant pool of four graduates. Future research should utilize multiple instruments and larger, more diverse samples for stronger findings. The insights gained can inform policymakers, educators, and families in enhancing EFL implementation, emphasizing that support should also come from home. Implementing educational policies that address the needs of all socio-economic classes can make learning more relevant and engaging.

Abstract

This study explores the attitudes and valorization of languages among Indonesian engineering students at Cendikia Abditama University. Employing a qualitative research design, the study gathered data from 70 students through questionnaires, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 10 participants to gain richer perspectives. A descriptive analytical approach was used to interpret the findings, revealing a predominantly positive attitude toward English, Indonesian, and heritage languages. This demonstrates a nuanced balance between cultural pride, national identity, and the global opportunities associated with these languages. The research highlights that while many students value all three languages equally, others exhibit a preference for one language over the others, depending on their immediate academic, professional, or personal aspirations. These variations reflect the dynamic interplay between cultural heritage and global competitiveness in shaping language attitudes. The findings underline the critical role of educational policies in supporting linguistic diversity and fostering inclusive learning environments. By integrating students’ linguistic backgrounds into educational curricula, institutions can enhance learning experiences and promote multilingual competence. Such approaches can help prepare students for the challenges of a globalized world while maintaining their cultural roots, thereby contributing to more comprehensive and meaningful educational practices. This study emphasizes the significance of aligning language education with students' diverse needs and aspirations.

Abstract

The act of reading necessitates that student readers employ various cognitive and linguistic tactics to comprehend the meaning embedded within the text. Using an e-learning method through WhatsApp groups to teach reading comprehension on narrative texts can be a new breakthrough. Therefore, the present study aims to find out the effect of WhatsApp groups on narrative text in junior high school students to teach reading comprehension. To reach the research aims, the study used experimental research method. The population of this research was 330 students of grade 9 of junior high school in Pematangsiantar. The researchers divided the samples intor control group and experimental group. The data collection method used was the reading tests employed to the students which covered pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The statistical analysis employed t-test analysis. Comparison of data from both groups indicated superior performance by the experimental group. The findings unequivocally show that the experimental intervention employing WhatsApp have significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text compared to traditional approaches. While WhatsApp has proven to be an effective tool, researchers must consider the challenges of using it for reading instruction in remote areas with limited internet connectivity. Students cannot access WhatsApp-based reading lessons without internet access, though they can still search for information through text messages. Therefore, it is important to examine the limitations of utilizing WhatsApp for reading education in areas with poor internet infrastructure.
