Abstract

Teacher mentors play a crucial role in supporting and guiding student teachers during their teaching practicum. While the benefits of teaching practicum and mentorship are well-documented, this qualitative study aims to delve deeper into the experiences of five EFL student teachers to understand the role of  teacher mentor during student teacher practicum. Through in-depth interviews, the research explores the perceptions of student teachers towards the practicum and mentorship. The results reveal that the role of teacher mentors is positively perceived by most of the students, because most of the mentors play a pivotal role in providing guidance and motivation, desiging a lesson plan and giving constructive feedback.  However, some students experienced lack of guidance, support as well as constructive feedback from the teacher mentors. In general, the mentorship aspect is particularly valued, as it offers essential support and professional growth opportunities. However, amidst the positive experiences, the study also uncovers various challenges encountered by student teachers such as lack of class management skill, limited student engagement and active involvement in the learning process, inadequate facilities, limited technology or classroom space and lack of sufficient preparation.

To complement this, quantitative data was collected through a random questionnaire distributed to 50 communities. This questionnaire investigated the use of regional languages, their users, and how they are maintained. The findings of this study explain the dynamics of the use of interesting language in Wakasihu Country. Age is an important factor, the older generation shows a higher level of language retention. In contrast, the younger generation shows a lower level of retention of their local language. This generational shift signifies a change in the linguistic landscape in society. This study underscores the complex relationship between social dynamics, attitudes, and patterns of language use, offering a comprehensive understanding of how these factors influence language preservation and vitality. Abstract

The choice of instructional media is pivotal, requiring innovation and practicality. One such medium that has demonstrated considerable promise is the Audiobook, whose effectiveness has already been demonstrated in the context of ELT in Azerbaijan. Building upon this precedent, the present study seeks to adapt this medium for implementation in Indonesia, employing distinct instruments and datasets. The overarching aim of this research endeavor is to assess the viability of Audiobooks as an instructional medium for teaching question tags to ninth-grade students in Indonesia. To rigorously investigate this question, the research design adopts a quantitative approach, utilizing an experimental methodology. The study selects two classes from the ninth-grade population as the sample, encompassing a total of 56 students. Data analysis techniques encompass both descriptive and inferential methods, with the Mann-Whitney U-test applied.. The findings reveal a noteworthy outcome: the achievement of students in the experimental group, exposed to Audiobook-based instruction, surpasses that of the control group. Crucially, this difference is statistically significant, as evidenced by the z-value exceeding the critical z-table value (6.198 > 1.96). Consequently, it is possible to conclude that Audiobooks serve as an effective method for teaching question tags to ninth-grade students in Indonesian junior high schools. These results contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the integration of innovative media, such as Audiobooks, into ELT practices. Moreover, they underscore the adaptability and potential transferability of such instructional approaches across diverse educational contexts, emphasizing the importance of pedagogical innovation in fostering effective language learning.

Abstract

The development and formulation of English language learning materials, meticulously tailored to encompass the cognitive processes of both the left and right brain hemispheres, emerge as a matter of profound import in the realm of promoting efficacious language acquisition among Junior High School students. In light of this imperative, the present research endeavors to construct and design English instructional materials with a distinct focus on seventh-grade learners within the Junior High School milieu, with an overarching objective of optimizing left- and right-brain accommodation. The research methodology employed is Research and Development (R&D). The procedural trajectory encompassed writing a syllabus, designing the materials, doing material evaluation, and revising the material draft. In the context of data collection, a twofold approach was undertaken, featuring targeted questionnaires designed to elicit data pertaining to both the students' instructional requisites and their perceived learning needs. This validation is derived from a tripartite evaluation, encompassing data analysis, expert assessment, and student feedback. Expert judgment, indicative of the materials' categorization as falling within the "good" bracket, substantiates the meticulous development process, with an average score of 3.8. Likewise, the evaluation, reflected in an average score of 3.13, corroborates the materials' efficacy in cultivating a conducive learning environment. In summation, this study epitomizes a deliberate and comprehensive endeavor to forge English instructional materials that transcend conventional paradigms by cognizantly accommodating the cognitive dimensions of learners' brains. The harmonious fusion of pedagogical design and cognitive insight, as evinced in the development and evaluation process, advocates for a dynamic shift in instructional material construction to better align with the multifaceted cognitive attributes of students in Junior High Schools.
