Abstract

Background: Severe fear of childbirth (FOC) may impair psychological well-being and readiness for birth. This report describes changes in FOC during continuous antenatal midwifery care. Case presentation: A woman in the third trimester, at 33 weeks and 6 days of gestation, reported fear of labour pain, concern for her own and her baby’s safety, restlessness, and sleep disturbance. Her Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire version A (W-DEQ A) score was 86, indicating severe FOC. Care and outcomes: Five visits were conducted up to 37 weeks and 6 days of gestation. Care included therapeutic communication, childbirth education, breathing and relaxation exercises, family involvement, and spiritual practices aligned with the patient’s preference. W-DEQ A scores across visits were 86, 80, 75, 70, and 65. At the final visit, the patient reported feeling calmer and better prepared for childbirth. Conclusion: The decrease in W-DEQ A score indicates clinical improvement during follow-up. Because this is a single case and several components were delivered concurrently, causality and the contribution of each component cannot be determined.

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is one of the reproductive health problems commonly experienced by adolescent girls and may affect daily activities, quality of life, and academic achievement. The high prevalence of dysmenorrhea at both global and national levels indicates the need for effective management efforts, one of which is through health education. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of warm compress education in improving adolescents' knowledge of dysmenorrhea management in the working area of Pilohayanga Public Health Center. This study employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design, using a one-group pre-test and post-test. The research sample consisted of 32 adolescent girls who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire to assess knowledge levels before and after the educational intervention. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed an increase in adolescents' knowledge after receiving education on warm compresses as a non-pharmacological method for managing dysmenorrhea, with a p-value of 0.000 (p <0.05). Good knowledge was influenced by the effectiveness of education and by the information received, both orally and in writing. In conclusión, education on warm compresses was effective in improving adolescents' knowledge of dysmenorrhea management.

Abstract

Quality sleep plays a crucial role in supporting infant growth and development, particularly during the transitional period between 6 and 12 months of age. Infant massage is a non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to improve infant sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the effect of infant massage on the sleep quality of infants aged 6-12 months in the Motoboi Kecil Community Health Center (Puskesmas). This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretestposttest approach. Thirty infants were selected using a total sampling technique for the study sample. Infant sleep quality was measured before and after the infant massage intervention using the Sleep Quality Index. The results showed an improvement in infant sleep quality after infant massage, characterized by longer sleep duration, reduced frequency of nighttime awakenings, and calmer infants. The conclusion of this study, based on the Wilcoxon test result (p=0.001), indicates that infant massage improves sleep quality in infants aged 6–12 months and can serve as a promotive and preventive measure in infant healthcare services.

Abstract

Vaginal discharge is a common reproductive health problem among women of childbearing age and can lead to health problems if not property managed. One non-pharmacological approach is administering pineapple juice, which contains active compounds such as bromelain, which acts as an antibacterial. This study aimed to determine the effect of pineapple juice on vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age in the Pilohayanga Community Health Center (Puskesmas) area. This study used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest and posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 23 women of childbearing age selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through observation sheets and analyzed univariately and bivariately using statistical tests. The results showed that before administering pineapple juice, most respondents experienced pathological vaginal discharge, whereas after administering pineapple juice, pathological discharge decreased. The statistical test results showed a p-value of 0.005 (<0.05), indicating that pineapple juice has an effect on vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age. The conclusion of this study is that pineapple juice reduces vaginal discharge and can be used as an alternative non-pharmacological therapy.

Abstract

Background: Diaper dermatitis is a common skin condition among infants who wear diapers and is characterized by redness, irritation, and discomfort. Appropriate diaper area care is essential for maintaining skin integrity and preventing worsening of diaper dermatitis. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has been used as a topical agent in infant skin care; however, evidence regarding its effectiveness in reducing the severity of diaper dermatitis among infants aged 0–12 months, particularly in primary healthcare settings, remains limited. This study aimed to determine the difference in changes in diaper dermatitis severity between infants receiving EVOO and those receiving standard diaper area care in the working area of Samata Public Health Center, Gowa Regency. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 34 infants aged 0–12 months with diaper dermatitis who were selected using purposive sampling, with 17 infants in the intervention group and 17 in the control group. The intervention group received topical EVOO at a dose of 2–3 drops at each diaper change, with an average frequency of 3–4 applications per day for 14 days, whereas the control group received standard diaper area care. Diaper dermatitis severity was assessed before and after the intervention using the Diaper Dermatitis Severity Index Score (DDSIS). Changes in DDSIS scores were calculated as the difference between pretest and posttest scores and were compared between the two groups using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: The median DDSIS score in the intervention group decreased from 2.0 at pretest to 0.0 at posttest, with a median change of 2.0 (IQR, 1.0–2.0). In the control group, the median DDSIS score decreased from 2.0 to 1.0, with a median change of 1.0 (IQR, 0.0–1.0). The Mann–Whitney U test showed a statistically significant difference in changes in DDSIS scores between the intervention and control groups (U = 78.5; p = 0.002). Conclusion: In this study protocol, 14 days of EVOO administration was accompanied by a greater reduction in diaper dermatitis severity compared with standard care among infants aged 0–12 months. EVOO may be considered as a potential topical intervention for diaper dermatitis; however, its use should be accompanied by standard diaper area care and monitoring of the infant's skin condition. Because this study employed a non-randomized quasi-experimental design, the findings should be interpreted as a difference in changes in severity between groups rather than as evidence of causality equivalent to that provided by a randomized controlled trial.
