Abstract

Abstract This study entitled “The Meaning Of Verbal And Non Verbal Sign In Cigarette Advertisements". Advertisements usually contains signs both verbal and non-verbal signs. This study found there are signs contained in advertisement of verbal and non-verbal signs. These advertisements are depicted from the words, pictures and utterances that appear. By using theory purposed by Saussure (1983) and by using Roland Barthes theory (1967), in this study to discuss and analyzes verbal and non-verbal visual sign in cigarette advertisements. The data source of this study is the cigarette advertisements of Esse, Marlboro, Surya, LA Bold, Camel, GG Mild, Gudang Garam Signature, and Lucky Strike. This study used observation method to collect the data that both verbal and non-verbal sign cigarette advertisements contain hidden message. Abstract

In the process of reading sometimes the readers have difficulty identifying the meaning of words correctly, especially words with affixes of prefixes and suffixes. The writer had made three objects of research. The first research is to find out how many affixes were used in the poetry “The Forerunner” by Kahlil Gibran, the second research is to find out what types were used in the poetry “The Forerunner” by Kahlil Gibran, the third research is to find out what types were dominant use in the poetry “The Forerunner” by Kahlil Gibran. In this study, the writer uses a descriptive mixed method that described, identified, classified, and calculated numerical data on the words of affixes found in Kahlil Gibran’s poetry. The result of the research shows the total number of affixes is 105 data found in the four chapters of the poetry “The Forerunner” by Kahlil Gibran. There are two types of affixes used in the four chapters of the poetry “The Forerunner” by Kahlil Gibran prefixes and suffixes. The dominant types of affixes found in the four chapters of the poetry “The Forerunner” by Kahlil Gibran were suffixes found in 99 data with a percentage of 94,3%.

Abstract

This article analyzes “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” film Subtitle Translation from English into Bahasa Indonesia. Mona Baker’s Translation Strategy is used to find out the equivalency of the meaning of the dialogs at word and idiom level. The data is collected by observation method with free observation technique and record technique. The analysis is conducted through four steps: first, make data list of sentences based on its appearance through time set for the film. Next, identify the English and Bahasa Indonesia translation, then collect the words and idioms of the dialogs which have non-equivalency conditon. Third, evaluate the translation by using Mona Baker’s translation strategy, and last, make conclusion from the data analysis. As the result, the words and idioms translation mostly fulfill Mona Baker’s Translation strategy approach. However, unavoidably there are words and idioms which wrongly translated, then should need correction.

Abstract

English is an international language that needs to be mastered by people who want to connect with other people from all over the world. Studying at a school or course institution is not enough to facilitate someone in speaking English quickly. There must be direct communication that is done to improve speaking skills. One of the international organizations that gives a person free space to use English is IMUN (International Model United Nations). IMUN is a simulation forum for the UN session that aims to mobilize young people from all over the world to express their opinions on international issues, which ultimately seeks to find a solution to a series of existing problems. This study's objective is to investigate English use in IMUN. The researchers use the descriptive qualitative method with the participation method as the primary data, and the screen captures of video or photo method to obtain additional data. One of the author's direct involvements in the Internship at IMUN (Campus Ambassador) and the simulation of the UN session (Online Conference) reinforce the fact that IMUN is truly an international organization that can be used as a forum to improve English language skills. With those experiences, the participants can improve their English skills quickly.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Teaching listening and speaking can be done by listening to audio, then assigning students to retell English. The author believes that listening teaching methods can be combined with speaking or other basic skills. This research reveals the application of listening and speaking teaching using the Integrated Learning method at the Faculty of Language and Culture, Semarang University, on August 17, 1945, and the obstacles faced in its application. The aim is to implement the integration of this method effectively, and in the future, it can be a reference for curriculum renewal according to the community's wishes. This research uses a research and development (R&D) design. Researchers collected data using listening tests and recordings of students' English speaking while listening to materials or tests. After that, the researcher conducted interviews with students as input for the application of this integration. The recordings were then transcribed and analyzed using a qualitative description. From the discussion, most of the students agreed with the application of integration, but a small number disagreed. From the experiment, the method of teaching the listening test combined with the English/speaking assignment in the first semester can be integrated or blended. The result will be that students' speaking abilities will be better and more effective because only 3 out of 20 students will answer only a few sentences that do not represent the content of the test. Two students answered in Bahasa Indonesia. Most of the others responded well.

Abstract

This research studies about politeness strategies in Charles Dickens Great Expectations. The writer analyze of Speech Acts in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations: A Politeness Language Analysis. The purposes of the research were to know the kinds of politeness strategies which used by the main characters in directive utterance and the politeness strategies of directive act in title. The data of this research was Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. This research was done by descriptive qualitative method. The research findings show that there were 2 types of politeness strategies. Based on the frequencies, the strategies applied in the data were Positive Politeness 145 frequencies (86%) and Negative Politeness 31 frequencies (14%). Based on the frequencies of directive utterance in the data were Pip 88 frequencies, Miss. Havisham 340 frequencies, Mrs. Joe Gargery 31 frequencies and Joe Gargery 8 frequencies.

Abstract

Death is inevitable, inapprehensible, yet it is the most trustworthy experience by human. People have their own various ways to encounter deaths, some by witnessing the death of others, some by reading fictional stories. Death and literature has close relationship as the literary genres portray deaths in various perspectives, such as death is praised in Classics, death is tragic in Romantics, and death is a part of life in postmodern literature. However, the attitude of people towards death and grief are vary. This research aims at finding the stages of grief (death and dying) using Kübler-Ross theory in C. G. Lewis novel A Grief Observed (1961). This research is qualitative using content analysis approach. The data were gathered through words, phrases, and sentences contained in the novel. The findings shows that the main charater, Lewis, finally succeed managing the whole five stages such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Moreover, with his acceptance of the death of his wife, he can capture the world in more meaningful ways and find peace in his heart. This is also strengthen that literature can be a media for consolation from suffering since this novel is based on true life story by the author himself.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare two stories with the same concept, namely stories about 1-inch humans from two different cultures, namely from British culture represented by the story of Tom Thumb and from Japanese culture represented by the story of Issun Boshi. This study uses a Comparative Literature approach that focuses on Zepetnek's theory of comparisons of literary works with different languages or cultures. Qualitative descriptive is used for the method in this study with a research design that is looking for similarities, differences, and the values contained in the two stories. The results obtained from this study are similarities such as 1. the main character's body size is 1 inch, 2. the origin of the main character's birth comes from prayer, 3. the main character's profession which is a knight, 4. setting of place at the beginning and the end of the story, 5. and the enemy of the main character who is a giant. In addition, differences were found, namely 1. differences in the nature of the main character, and 2. the ending of the story. The differences in the two stories are due to differences in family values. The family value found in Issun Boshi's is responsibilities, while the family value found in Tom Thumb's is self-reliance.

Abstract

Language is a system of spoken, manual (signed), or written symbols in which human beings express themselves as members of a social group and participants in its culture. The audio-lingual teaching method is defined as a method that emphasizes on repetition of words to help the students to understand the use of the target language communicatively. The objective of this thesis is to measure the students’ accomplishment in increasing their English vocabulary after using the audio-lingual method and to find the benefits of using the audio-lingual method in increasing the vocabulary for students. In finishing this research, the method used is class action research by applying mixed methods. The population of this research was students in 3A Generous of SD Shalom Semarang, which consist of 25 students. The writer used the theory of Larsen-Freeman in this research. The instrument of the research were multiple-choice tests of 15 items and short essay tests of 5 items. In finding, the score of the post-test (84,6%) is higher than the score of the pre-test (75,8%). It means that using the audio-lingual method in teaching English vocabulary gives enough effect on the third-grade students’ accomplishments.

Abstract

This study aims to find the discriminatory actions in the 200 Pounds Beauty Movie. 200 Pounds Beauty is a 2006 film. This film tells the story of a fat woman named Hanna who wants to become a famous singer. However, because of her plump body, Hanna receives discriminatory treatment from other characters. Discrimination is the unfair treatment of a person or group of people who have differences in race, ethnicity, gender, and others. Therefore, the authors chose the film 200 Pounds Beauty to analyze the discriminatory treatment received by Hanna’s character. To be able to conduct research, the author uses a structural approach method. Then, the researchers collect data using the library research method and present the data collected in a sentence and pictures. From the research that has been done on the film 200 Pounds Beauty, it can be said that many of the acts of discrimination are accepted by Hanna’s character. Each discrimination that has been carried out has a different effect. The authors suggest that future researchers analyze discrimination more deeply.
