Abstract

he issue of air quality continues to be a major concern for both the environment and human health on a global scale, especially in developing nations. In 2015, Indonesia garnered international recognition as a result of the extensive forest and land fires. Exposure to PM particles in the air presents a substantial health hazard to individuals participating in their everyday routines. Research on the effects of forest fires on respiratory health in Central Kalimantan is still lacking. The Chest Miyagi multipurpose HI-801 spirometer, which was calibrated, was used to do lung function measurements. The participants were assessed while standing indoors in an environment with consistent air movement. Prior to the test, the individual's height and weight were measured and recorded in the spirometer, which then used this data to automatically determine the expected lung function. A sample size of 215 respondents who fulfilled the research criteria was selected for the study. The examinations took place in 7 urban and rural locations that were considered to be most susceptible to forest and land fires, based on the researcher's subjective judgment. These locations were chosen to meet the required sample size and were in close proximity to the fire sources. The spirometry device measures lung function, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), the ratio of FEV1 to FVC, and Forced Expiratory Flow (FEF). This study aimed to assess the effect of recurrent forest fires on lung function, specifically in relation to gender, in Palangka Raya City, Pulang Pisau Regency, and Kapuas Regency, located in the Central Kalimantan Province. The analysis was conducted using spirometry tests. There were no notable disparities in lung function among the respondents based on their gender.

Abstract

Echinococcus infection in the spinal cord can lead to various complications, including compression of the spinal cord. In some cases, Echinococcus infection can result in the formation of dumbbell structures within the spinal cord, extending into the paravertebral region. This type of infection is characterized by a high recurrence rate, ranging from 50% to 100%. This study used reliable and important scientific databases like PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, as well as official databases from health organizations. Furthermore, studies have shown that individuals with preexisting conditions like pressure ulcers are at an elevated risk of postoperative infections following spinal cord surgery. Echinococcus infection in the spinal cord can have serious consequences such as compression and the formation of complex structures. Understanding the risk factors associated with postoperative infections and the persistence of viral infections in the spinal cord is crucial for effective management and treatment strategies in affected individuals.

Abstract

Inflammation is the body's response to foreign substances that enter the body and is characterized by redness, fever, swelling, pain, and impaired organ function. Anti-inflammatory is a term for substances or medicines that work to reduce or suppress the inflammatory process. One of the plants originating from Papua is anthill (Myrmecodia pendens). Ant nest (Myrmecodia pendens) contains lots of synthetic secondary metabolite substances such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids. That ingredient is presumed to have an effect as anti-inflammatory. This research aims to examine the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of anthill ointment extract (Myrmecodia pendens) on the feet of white rats induced by carrageenan. The test group was divided into 5 groups in which each group consisted of 3 rats. The positive control group was subjected to bioplacenton, the negative control to ointment base, and the extract group to anthill ointment extract (Myrmecodia pendens) with concentrations of F1 (10%), F2 (20%), and F3 (40%). The test was conducted by inserting 1% carrageenan liquid into the sole of the rat's right paw. The volume of edema was measured using a syrup bottle filled with water every 60 minutes for 360 minutes. The data were analyzed statistically using (ANOVA) and obtained data p = 0.580 > 0.05. The conclusion of this research is that there is no significant difference in the percent of anti-inflammatory power between the dose groups F1 (10%), F2 (20%) and F3 (40%) with positive control.
