Abstract

This research intends to analyze and search for 7 areas of Chafetz's masculinity using Roland Barthes' semiotic method in the film High and Low the Movie 3 Final Mission. The semiotics presented by Barthes regarding the meaning of denotation and connotation were implemented in analyzing 12 screenshots of scenes presented in the film High and Low the Movie 3 Final Mission. Then the 12 research findings were analyzed using a predetermined method, namely using Janet Saltzman Chafetz's theory regarding 7 areas of masculinity. This study uses a qualitative method. Based on semiotic analysis in the film High and Low the Movie 3 Final Mission, it has a relationship with the 7 areas of masculinity proposed by Janet Saltzman Chafetz. Namely the character's physical condition and appearance that is fashionable, the figure of provider or breadwinner for both oneself and many people, aggressive nature and experience in fighting, the ability to regulate one's emotional condition, the ability to think rationally and based on logic/knowledge, high interpersonal attitude, and spirit and fair competitive attitude.

Abstract

Many Indonesian learners continue to struggle with learning English as a foreign language (EFL) and frequently produce errors in grammatical aspects when speaking English spontaneously. This may be influenced by several factors. Hence, this research reports on a study aimed at investigating and examining the errors produced by Indonesian learners in their oral presentations and the sources of the errors. In conducting this study, the error analysis procedures and a descriptive qualitative study were used. The data were collected from sixteen college students’ oral presentations of the non-English department. To gather the data, the students’ presentations were video-typed and the utterances were transcribed. In analysing the data, a theory of error classification proposed by Dulay et al. (1982) namely a surface strategy taxonomy was employed. The findings reveal that four types of errors based on the surface strategy taxonomy namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors are found in the students’ productions in their oral presentation. The frequent errors made by the learners are omission, followed by misformation, addition, and misordering. Meanwhile, two major causes driving learners to make numerous mistakes are intra-lingual and inter-lingual interference. However, from both factors, the largest cause is intra-lingual interference. Thus, the students’ L1 interference affects their mastery of the target language. Finally, this study is expected to contribute to the improvement of EFL teaching and learning.

Abstract

This research was motivated by observations of students' English language skills. Seeing the phenomenon of students' abilities, it is felt necessary to be more intensive in improving their mastery apart from the learning material provided. This encourages educators to apply English audio-visual media to train students to get used to hearing English pronunciation. The aim of this research is to determine the importance of improving vocabulary mastery and English writing using audio-visual media. The approach used in this research is qualitative with descriptive analysis. The sample in this research was a literature review of previous research on published books, newspapers and scientific articles. Samples were taken in the form of articles about English vocabulary and writing using audio-visual media. Data collection techniques use test techniques to strengthen the influence of sampling and vocabulary. The results of the analysis indicate that efforts to increase vocabulary are followed by improving writing skills first. Therefore, the more vocabulary a student has from audio-visual media, the better he or she will be at writing English text content

Abstract

One of the efforts to develop ecological literacy skills can be done through formal education. The system owned by formal education, namely schools, is able to induce components that support ecological literacy skills, including knowledge, skills, attitudes and actions. The purpose of this study was to find out what eco-literacy content is in language learning and its impacts on students' pro-environmental habit. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 4 Kota Ternate. The method used in this research is content analysis on textbooks and students interview to obtain information and practical experience of students. Based on the results of data analysis, in class VII and IX, there is one unit each in the textbook which contains literacy ecology with the respective themes 'Let's Clean Up' and 'Let's Live Healthy' (Let’s live a healthy life). For the first theme, the significant impact that is visible and integrated in daily activities at school is that students always maintain cleanliness by sweeping and cleaning before starting lessons, throwing garbage in its place, always cleaning the black-board after use, wearing clean and tidy uniforms when going to school. Interview data also showed that students always helped their parents to clean the house on Sundays, cut thick branches, clean gutters, clean bedrooms, etc. The second theme is about maintaining a healthy life, there are some students who bring food from home because it is cleaner and safer, students regularly cut their nails, cut their hair (for boys), bathe with soap, brush their teeth and wear perfume to school. Based on the analysis and interview data above, it can be concluded that students know, understand, and practice the habit of maintaining cleanliness and healthy living practices in daily life at school and at home, meaning that eco-literacy learning has a positive impact on students' understanding of environmental insights both at school and at home.

Abstract

Pronunciation refers to the manner in which humans articulate the sounds of a particular language. Language proficiency is crucial for effective communication with others. In the event that our pronunciation is inadequate, we may have difficulties in being comprehended, regardless of the accuracy of our grammar and vocabulary. The objective of this research is to identify errors in the production of Velar consonants by second-semester students enrolled in the English education study program at Muhammadiyah University Purworejo during the academic year 2023/2024. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research methodology. The research focused on second semester students studying English language education. The researcher selected a sample of 20 students for the investigation. The researchers used a pronunciation test as the device to get the data. The investigation revealed a significant occurrence of mispronunciations in the final position of the /g/ sound. Students often exhibited a proclivity to replace the /k/ sound with the /g/ pronunciation, as exemplified in terms like "big" and "beg." The consonant /g/ in the last position is unquestionably a strange consonant for Indonesian students. As a result, they often replaced that sound with the /k/ sound. Furthermore, students faced difficulties in determining the sound of vowels or consonants that come after encountering the consonant /?/. For example, the phonetic representation of /?f????r/ changes to /?f??d??r/, while the phonetic representation of /?s???r/ turns into /s??g?r.

Abstract

This research investigates the issue of multiculturalism in Khaled Hosseini's novel The Kite Runner (2003). The novel narrates the friendship, betrayal, and redemption between two boys (Amir, who is from the Pashtun tribe, and Hassan, who is from the Hazara tribe) in Afghanistan, separated by social backgrounds and traumatic incidents. This research applies the Hybridity theory proposed by Homi K. Bhabha (1994), an Indian literary theorist and professor recognized for his contributions to postcolonial studies. A qualitative method is preferred as textual analysis heavily permeates the research. The main objective of this research is to center on Hosseini's presentation of the main characters in the novel, Amir and Hassan in the context of multiculturalism's failure in Afghanistan. The findings illustrate that the failure of multiculturalism between the Pashtun and Hazara tribes in the novel encounters challenges which include discrimination, persecution & violence, and systemic injustices. Efforts such as Building Inter-Ethnic Friendship and Solidarity and Against Discrimination and Injustice to overcome the failure of multiculturalism between Pashtuns and Hazaras fail due to the complexity of structural factors, limited access to healthcare and education, the persistence of violence and discrimination, differences in values and culture, and stereotypes and social practices in Afghan society.
