Abstract

To support success in the future, the mastery of writing is significant for school students. However, acquiring this ability may take time because students have to learn to minimize errors. This research aims to describe the students’ errors in their writing of descriptive texts and finding out the degree of the errors made by the eight grade students of SMP N 6 Kebumen in the academic year of 2019 / 2020. The writer used descriptive qualitative method in conducting the study. The research involved 32 students of grade VIII in the academic year of 2019 / 2020 at SMP N 6 Kebumen as participants that were selected by purpose. Data in this research were in the forms of words and sentences showing the students’ writing ability of descriptive texts taken from the worksheet documents done by the students. The writer analysed the documents by using the surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay et.all. (1982:152). Data validity was gained by using investigator triangulation. It is how examination of the credibility of the data is done by making use of other observers for checking the degree of trust of the data.The results of the research showed that there had been found 123 items of errors in the descriptive writings made by the students of grade VIII at SMP N 6 Kebumen in the academic year of 2019/2020. These errors consisted of four types. They covered errors of ommision, errors of misformation, errors of addition, and errors of misordering. The sequence of the errors from the most dominant type to the least one was errors of misformation (61%), errors of omission (20%), errors of addition (15%), and errors of misordering (4%). This research was described the students’ errors in writing descriptive texts. Accordingly, this possibly helps students correct their errors to produce better writing later. Abstract

This research aims (1) to find out a significant difference in teaching reading comprehension between students who learned using the Jigsaw II technique and those who did not.  (2) To find out the extent to which Jigsaw II technique used in teaching reading comprehension to the tenth-grade students of SMK N 1 Gombong to be effective. This research was experimental research.  The research design used the pre-test-posttest control and experimental class.  The population in this study was X grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Gombong.  Sampling used a random sampling technique with the results of X TKJ C as an experimental class and X TKR C as a control class.  Data collected with pre-test and post-test given to the experimental class and the control class.  The validity used content validity and construct validity.  Content validity carried out by expert judgment.  The construct validity has done with the help of the Pearson program.  The instrument reliability test conducted using split-half in the SPSS program and a value of 0.889 was obtained.  The data analysis technique used the Mann Whitney test with a significance level of 5%.  The results of testing the requirements analysis showed that the pre-test and post-score scores were not normally distributed and homogeneous. The results of the study can be concluded as follows: first, there is a significant difference in reading comprehension skills between experimental class that got learning using Jigsaw II techniques and control class that got learning without using Jigsaw II techniques in X grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Gombong.  It can be proven from the results of the Mann Whitney test post-test control class and the experimental class were obtained by Asymp Sig = 0,000.  Secondly, the Jigsaw II technique has been proven effective to improve reading comprehension of the X grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Gombong.  It can be proven from the calculation results of the experimental class Gain Score of 23.78 and the control class 6.11. Abstract

The purposes of this study were (1) to know how is perceptions of student in learning English through Communicative English Club (CEC) IAIN Salatiga and (2) to know how is the student’s perception of the stimulus for the English material given by the Communicative English Club (CEC) IAIN Salatiga. This study uses qualitative research to find out the purposes. Sample is chosen by the researcher or called a purposive sample. Six students who joined in Communicative English Club (CEC) were interviewed. From the results of this study, it is concluded that students who join the Communicative English Club (CEC) Student Activity Unit (UKM) had a positive perception of learning English at CEC and the materials that were given. CEC activities or work programs improve their English language skills, especially speaking skills. Although not aiming to learn English, students got an experience of learning English at CEC that is different from learning in the classroom. They got the opportunity to practice English more often. In addition, CEC provides environmental and mental support for learning English. Students consider English material to be not just written grammar material, but English material can be obtained through an environment, discussion, and experience that can improve their English language skills. Abstract

Human cannot communicate with one another without language. Good language will affect the effectiveness of the information delivery. Using a good adverb clause is one of effective sentence example. However, the continuous use of adverb clauses will also create redundancies in the delivery of information. Therefore, it is necessary to have a variety of uses of adverb clauses, one of which is the use of reducing adverb clauses. This research provides a description of what elements that can be reduced in the Reduced Adverbial Clause and what changes that occurs in Reduced Adverbial Clause after the reduction process is carried out. The data of this research is collected from corpus with note-taking technique. This study uses qualitative methods with interactive techniques. Interactive technique covers three components, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. This research found that adverbial clause can be reduces as long as it has the same subject. Elements that can be reduced in adverbial clause are subject, subject and auxiliary, and conjunction. The changes of reduced clause can be in the form of present participle, past participle, and clause without subject and auxiliaries. Keywords: Reduced Adverbial Clause, Language, Adverbial Clause

Abstract

This study aims to find out the text genres, the generic structure and language features in English textbook Pathway to English used by tenth grade students. This study analyzed the genre of the text, generic structure, and language features. A descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the genre in Pathway to English textbook. There were four genres found in collecting data, descriptive text, narrative text, recount text, and announcement text. Then the researcher analyzing the generic structure and language features used in the text. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that from 18 texts taken, 4 texts (22%) data were descriptive text, 5 texts (28%) data were narrative text, 5 texts (28%) data were recount text, and 4 texts (22%) data belonged to announcement text. Based on the theories, the generic structure and the language features of each genre found in Pathway to English textbook were correct in English. Keywords: genre, text, textbook

Abstract

Language teaching should have portions for cultural reviews and studies that are relevant to the topics and learners’ needs. This research was qualitative descriptive aimed to describe the cross-cultural understanding implementation in business and economic ESP class. It is significant to describe the class realization toward cultural aspect understanding since the findings are expected to enhance future class preparation. Better cultural-based-prepared material is believed to bring a better social impact on learners. Lecturers’ and students’ perspectives based on several interviews were the basis for final finding construction. Three English lecturers were involved. Snowball sampling was the sampling method employed resulting in 40 students involved in interviews. In the context of business and economics ESP in Universitas Putra Bangsa, lecturers provided material related to cross-cultural understanding in verbal realization i.e. in the level of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The above levels were introduced by the lecturers with cultural and contextual approaches. Students expected more strategic-applicable utterances for daily communication in a workplace setting. Lecturers delivered the general importance of non-verbal cross-cultural understanding in the form of kinesics (eye contact and gesture), proxemics, and artifactual in a workplace setting. Kinesics was prominent, while proxemics and artifactual were least prepared. Students found practical activities in non-verbal cross-cultural understanding realization were interesting and challenging. Abstract

This study deals with Janet Quin-Harkin’s novel entitles “California Girl”. It was aimed to see the main character’s motivation in achieving her dream. It’s a qualitative study which employed psychological approaches. The primary data were in the forms of written expressions found in the narrations, dialogues, sentences and paragraphs in the novel showing the character’s behaviour and motivation in pursuing her dream. Data analysis applied procedures, namely data collection, data reduction, data serving, and drawing conclusion. To validate, data sources triangulation was used. The researcher read some related theories through books and articles. The study concluded that: First, Janet portrayed Jennie as a girl who was tall and skinny for her age with short mid-brown hair. She didn’t have a good physical outlook. She was introvert; and, therefore she had problem with social relationship. She was emotionally unstable and worried about losing her chance to make the Olympic team. Second, Jennie achieved her dream by trying to fulfil her fundamental needs for priorities. She ate enough food for her physical calories. After that, she fulfilled her psychological needs. She found love in Mark and never let him down. She also wanted to be accepted by her mother. Besides, swimming was her chosen sport to show that she was worth appreciating. Keywords: Analysis, motivation, dream

Abstract

The problems of the study are : (1) how is the teaching and learning process of speaking English of the first grade of Nursing Academy of Purworejo regency in Academic Year of 2019/2020. (2) Whyare the problems found during the teaching and learning process of speaking English of the first grade of Nursing Academy of Purworejo Regency. Tehe theories which are used as a basis of this. Study are the nature of language, teaching and learning, the model of curiculum in Nursing Academy. Teaching and learning of speaking English, the lesson plan of speaking English, media and the source of learning, act. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that: (1) Some Casees occur during the teaching and learning of speaking English . (2) the students find the difficulties in pairing and perfoming speaking because the situdents limited of vocabularies, pronounciation, and grammar mastery. This research is a casestudy done at the first grade of Nursing Academy Purworejo regency in Academic Year of 2019/2020. The technique of sampling is purposive sampling. The data to get from: 910 the teaching and learning process of Speaking English language; (2) the informants: they are the teacher of English lesson of the first grade and the students; and (3) the document. The technique of the data gathering are: (1) obseravtion; (2) indepth interview; and (3) document analysis. The observation was done to capture the teaching and learning process of speaking, indepth interview was done to test. The bvalidaty process of speaking, to get the data from document, a document analysis done are syllabus, the lesson plan the criteria of minimal achiesment and students assessment. The gathered data were analysed by using reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. Key word: process, during, limited, conclusion, Assessment.

Abstract

Each language, including English, uses deixis differently due to various distinct settings, such as grammatical restrictions and cultural or customary backgrounds in society. Descriptive qualitative research is the method used to analyze the data. As data-gathering instruments, human instruments and text analysis were used. All of which are used in written form to refer to the speaker, recipients, and references who are not speakers or recipients. According to the research, the personal pronoun deixis is most commonly used in the human subject's second, third, and possessive plural forms. Additionally, deixis with a temporal focus is used in CNN International articles as speech moments, and there are two different times: the "coding" and "receiving" times (the time of recovering information by the listener who is informed). Abstract

‘Black or White’ described of complains, blames, jealously, selfishness, and understanding about the family love from Elliot Anderson’s character. This research is aimed to know the character of Elliot Anderson as main character by analyzing the evidence from the dialogues and his actions in the film. To know about the character of Elliot Anderson, the writer used the descriptive qualitative method in this paper. The writer employs himself to collect the data by reading script, watching the film and marking them. The writer used the film of Black or White by Mike Binder released in 2014 by Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The writer focused on the dialogues of the film, and then followed by analyzing the character through conscientiousness and neuroticism of personality. In this analysis, the writer finds out that final result about the protagonist character of Elliot Anderson. Elliot Anderson is a recently widower and visible wealthy grandfather. The writer found Conscientiousness of Elliot Anderson characteristic is ambitious and neuroticism Elliot is irritable or anger, complaining person, blaming person, selfish, and jealous. It’s all happened when on one particularly bad day, in which he loses his wife, he wishes people would recognize how hard he is trying and how good his heart is and just leaving him alone in his big house with its big swimming pool and his Mexican maid to raise his young granddaughter Eloise.  Keyword: Black or White Film, Elliot Anderson, Protagonist Character
