Abstract

State universities and colleges in the Philippines adopted English as the primary medium of instruction, with speaking playing a significant role as part of the four basic skills when learning a language. Therefore, the study explored the perceived oral proficiency of tertiary students in a state university, with ESL teachers suggesting possible interventions to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning oral English skills. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was used, where simple random sampled respondents among tertiary students answered online survey questionnaires, while conveniently sampled ESL teachers answered the supplementary open-ended questions based on the initial quantitative results. Through descriptive analysis, students were found to have generally decent oral proficiency skills, with strong to neutral agreement on the influence of environmental and psychological factors. The teachers then interpreted the quantitative results, saying that for oral proficiency skills, students had satisfactory skills, a lack of self-assurance in those skills, and a need for targeted support for those skills, while for environmental and psychological factors, students had confused self-concepts, primarily extrinsic motivation for learning, and an appreciation for their learning environment. ESL teachers suggested speech practice and integration, interactive activities, and real-world experiences as pedagogical interventions for oral proficiency and motivating experiences, acceptance of mistakes, and safe learning environments for the factors of oral proficiency. Besides taking into consideration the possible pedagogical interventions, the researcher recommended expanding research on the structures and variables that affect oral proficiency skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how these smart monitoring technologies can be effectively implemented in marine engineering practice through a structured, management-oriented approach. The study utilized a descriptive-correlational approach with the participation of selected 106 marine engineering personnels within the Philippines. The study was focused on human resource and competency development, process optimization, system integration management, and project implementation supervision among maritime companies in the Philippines. The study used various statistical methods to analyze the profile of the respondents and evaluate the identified problems and best practices such as frequencies, percentages, and weighted means. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was employed to test the relationship existing between the level of difficulty and change in the best practices in the four major areas. The results indicated that the project implementation monitoring was the most difficult with the mean of 3.13, whereas system integration management was the least with the mean of 2.42.  The management’s best practices regarding system integration received the highest score of 3.50, which is significant for the technology’s integration effectiveness. Although the issues of human resource and competency development showed weak and insignificant correlations with the related best practices, several other areas, especially system integration management, process optimization, and project implementation oversight, showed stronger correlations This means that when difficulties arise in these areas, the organization will be more willing to adopt flexible, effective best practices to maintain operational performance and promote the successful adoption of technology in maritime engineering operations.

Abstract

Mathematics is a foundational subject, yet many elementary pupils struggle with abstract concepts such as multiplication and division. In the Philippines, gaps in mathematical proficiency remain evident in national and international assessments, further aggravated by limited instructional support and inadequate learning resources. Video-based instructional materials offer a promising approach by integrating visual, auditory, and contextual elements to make mathematics more interactive and accessible. This study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design with 38 Grade 3 pupils from Tinigaw Elementary School during S.Y. 2023–2024. A validated researcher-made test (KR-20 = 0.822) identified least mastered competencies and measured learning gains, while semi-structured interviews explored pupils’ challenges. Experts evaluated the acceptability of the developed materials using the DepEd LRMDS tool. Pretest results showed low mastery in the properties of multiplication (42%) and multi-digit division problems (62%). Qualitative findings revealed that pupils struggled with weak foundational knowledge, limited guidance, and poor-quality modules. Difficulties in multiplication and division, especially in problem-solving, and mismatched examples contributed to frustration and incomplete activities. After 12 weeks of video-based lessons, pupils’ mean performance improved significantly from 5.16 (SD = 2.03) to 8.61 (SD = 1.17), with a paired-sample t-test confirming statistical significance (t = -10.795, p < .05). Expert evaluation rated the materials “Acceptable” (M = 1.99). These results suggest that video-based instructional materials effectively enhance mathematical performance, increase engagement, and address learning gaps, supporting their integration in basic education to improve achievement in Mathematics.

Abstract

This study examined the psychological perspectives of single mothers employed in higher education institutions and their implications for women’s self-empowerment. Guided by Carol Ryff’s Theory of Psychological Well-Being, the research focused on five dimensions—self-acceptance, relationships with others, autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth. Using descriptive research design, data were gathered from purposively selected 49 single mothers in Cabanatuan City through a validated 25-item questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. Findings revealed that respondents strongly agreed on self-acceptance, autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth, while they agreed on their relationships with others. The results highlight that single mothers exhibit resilience, autonomy, and a strong sense of purpose, though they remain guarded in forming deeper interpersonal relationships. These findings imply the need for holistic empowerment initiatives that reinforce strengths in self-acceptance, independence, and growth while addressing vulnerabilities in relational support. The study concludes that empowering single mothers requires both personal development opportunities and institutional policies that recognize their dual roles as educators and sole caregivers, thereby fostering their well-being and capacity to thrive.

Abstract

The economic support of many farmers in the Philippines is shaky, mainly due to the unstable prices of the agricultural products and livestock they deal in, along with the constant increase in the prices of basic necessities. The research investigated the link between food price volatility and Farmer’s Terms of Trade (FTT), which is a metric for measuring farmers’ purchasing power, for the period from 2018 to 2024. Six leading commodities, namely rice, copra, lakatan banana, pork, broiler chicken, and cattle, were studied. The volatility of food prices was assessed using Coefficient of Variation (CV), while FTT was computed through the use of Producer and Consumer Price Index data. The analysis unveiled that rice was the least fluctuating item and thus, it provided farmers with a more stable income source. Bananas came next with less variability. On the other hand, copra prices were the least stable, as reflected by the extremely high CV, indicating a very risky market. Among the animals, pork, being the most volatile, faced high prices and disease outbreaks. The FTT numbers showed severe poverty issues from 2018-2020, meaning farmers’ incomes had fallen behind their needs, hence they could not afford to live. The situation slightly improved from 2021 when a partial recovery was seen, but the values remained close enough to indicate a very weak improvement in buying power. The results imply that the combination of high price volatility and weak FTT means farmers ascend through the low-income tunnel, and their welfare gets worse.

Abstract

This study assessed the implementation of city ordinances in a highly urbanized city in the Philippines and their implications for public safety and security. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, with data collected from 149 respondents, comprising police officers, barangay officials, and community residents, using a self-administered survey questionnaire. The findings revealed a strong consensus among the three groups, who rated the implementation of community service, issuance of violation receipts, filing of cases, and reporting procedures as "Highly Implemented." Common violations, such as curfew breaches, public smoking, and drinking in public, were identified as persistent challenges. ANOVA results confirmed no significant differences in the assessments of the three groups, indicating a unified perception of ordinance enforcement’s effectiveness. This study highlights the importance of collaborative efforts among law enforcement, local officials, and the community in maintaining public order. Recommendations include developing an integrated digital management system to strengthen documentation, reporting, and public engagement, as well as fostering continuous collaboration with local communities and organizations to enhance trust and actively participate in upholding public safety. The findings contribute to the understanding of effective urban governance strategies and align with the principles of the "Safe City" framework, emphasizing the significance of data-driven, technology-enabled approaches in ensuring sustained public safety and security in complex urban environments.

Abstract

The study aimed to explore the students’ insights by examining the factors that influence their school preference and overall experience during the enrollment process. The study utilized a descriptive-quantitative research method employing survey research to analyze the perspectives of incoming college students. The participants of the study were all admitted students for the school year 2024-2025 at Baliuag University, Baliwag City, Bulacan. Specifically, the study employed a nonprobability sampling technique known as purposive sampling. A total of 707 respondents were involved in the conduct of the investigation, which comprised the total number of students who answered the survey questionnaire. The students’ school preference, based on the results of the study, spans factors not limited to advertising strategies. With friends’ and relatives’ recommendations being the most influential, this underscored the importance of the respondents’ social groups in choosing their university for higher education pursuits. Along with this factor are programs offered, academic excellence/quality education, mode of transportation being tricycle, sportsfest, and learning modality preferred as face-to-face classes. Further, the outstanding enrollment process satisfaction results also indicated that the institution should continuously maintain its current operational techniques as well as its openness to feedback, as service quality proved to be fundamental in how students perceive higher education institutions. The findings of the study served as a basis for targeted recommendations aimed at continuously improving university positioning in the student market, proactively responding to evolving student preferences, and ensuring relevance in the highly competitive Philippine higher education institution academic landscape.

Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of peer-based learning on the problem-solving skills of students in marine transportation, providing evidence-based suggestions for the development of maritime curricula. During the second semester of the 2024–2025 academic year, 80 third-year students enrolled in SEAM 6 (Trim, Stability, and Stress of a Vessel) at the College of Maritime Education, Dr. Yanga’s Colleges, Inc., participated in the true experimental design. Participants were randomly assigned to either a peer-based learning group or a conventional individual learning group. Validated problem-solving activities were employed to collect data, and t-tests were used in the statistical analysis to identify performance differences between groups. Results showed that students who engaged in peer-based learning consistently performed better than those in the traditional learning group, as seen by their noticeably higher exercise scores, according to the data. The t-test results highlighted the practical value of the findings by confirming statistical significance and demonstrating a significant effect size. A training program was created in response to these findings to encourage the incorporation of peer-based teaching techniques in skill-based marine courses. These findings provide empirical evidence for the implementation of cooperative learning methodologies in maritime training programs, demonstrating their effectiveness in technical education. By highlighting how peer engagement improves student comprehension, skill development, and overall competency, the study advances educational philosophy. Practically, peer-based learning can promote improved performance in technical topics and a deeper grasp of the material. Future research is recommended to investigate the impact of peer-based learning on information retention.

Abstract

This study examines the attitude of the non-math major education students on learning mathematics online as a new way of delivering learning during the ongoing pandemic. It determines their attitude in the selected events of instruction. The study make used of descriptive design. Furthermore, the data used in this study were obtained from 50 respondents of Holy Name University who are taking General Education Course - Mathematics online.  Data were collected through self-administered survey questionnaire sent through google form to comply with the existing policies in the midst of pandemic. The responses made by the respondents were collected, tallied, recorded, tabulated, and interpreted with the help of the statistical tools. The result shows that students develop a positive perception in the event of presenting the content. Students got neutral level of perception to the rest of the events of instruction. The result also indicates that there is no significant difference between students’ attitude towards learning mathematics online when grouped according to area of specialization and events of instruction. Moreover, it was concluded that employing various strategies, techniques, and teaching aids in the event of presenting the content develop a positive perception on the students’ attitude towards learning Mathematics. The result proves that the events in instructional method employed in the mathematics classroom show a significant impact on developing students’ attitude towards mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between demographic and professional factors—specifically gender, age, and physical education (P.E.) areas handled—and health and sleep metrics among P.E. teachers. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed among 374 P.E. teachers. Data were collected using validated instruments, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), along with direct and smart app health measurements. Statistical analyses included independent t-tests, Pearson correlations, ANOVA, and chi-square tests. The sample comprised 58.8% males with a mean age of 38.9 years. Gender showed minimal relationships with health metrics except for daily steps (females higher, p = 0.05). Age was significantly associated with sleep quality (r = 0.15, p = 0.03), sleep disorder prevalence (χ2 = 10.5, p = 0.03), BMI category (χ2 = 12.3, p = 0.02), and blood pressure (systolic: r = 0.20, p = 0.01; diastolic: r = 0.18, p = 0.02). Most notably, P.E. areas handled showed the strongest associations with health metrics, particularly physical activity levels, daily steps, sleep quality, and BMI categories (all p < 0.05). Professional specialization within P.E. teaching emerged as the most significant predictor of health and sleep outcomes, surpassing demographic factors. These findings inform institution for targeted wellness interventions to revisit and review institutional policies for P.E. educators.
