Abstract

Reading comprehension still became a problematic competence for some EFL students in High School level. Many scholars have implemented various cognitive reading strategies. Thus, the objective of this research is to explore whether or not the implementation of Question-and-Answer Relationship Strategy (QAR) can boost students’ reading comprehension of eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Sindue.  Narrative text in terms of local folklore was focused on this research and limited in literal and inferential level of understanding. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. The researchers applied a random sampling technique and selected XI G as an experimental class with 22 students and XI C as a control class with 22 students. Then, tests were used as research instruments which consisted of pretest and post-test. Furthermore, the researchers used SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 29.0.2.0 to analyse the data. The data prove that the mean score of the experimental class was higher than the mean score of the control class. In addition, the result of sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05. Therefore, it can be indicated that the hypothesis is accepted. Thus, this research concludes that Question and Answer Relationship Strategy can effectively enhance the students’ reading comprehension of eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Sindue.

Abstract

This research is qualitative research, namely research whose data sources are obtained from observations, interviews, and documentation obtained at the research location and on the objects and samples studied by the author to obtain valid and relevant information on the variables studied, namely in the form of movements, words, and images collected at the research location. Based on the research results, researchers found that: 1) The implementation of religious studies at the Waara Village Qur'anic Education Center (QEC) is routinely carried out every day after the Maghrib prayer, and sometimes continued after the Isha prayer if there are still children who have not had time to recite the Qur'an. The teaching carried out by the teachers starts from the introduction of the Hijayah letters, both pronunciation and makhraj, to children who are still at the Iqro level, as well as learning the laws of tajwid to children who have entered the Qur'an level. 2) The understanding of Islam, in this case understanding and implementing the pillars of Islam in the children of the Waara Village QEC, is quite good. This can be seen from the diligence of the children in performing prayers and fasting during Ramadan, and understanding the sentence of the shahada. This can be consistent because of the affirmation and supervision carried out by the Waara Village QEC teachers, who do not allow their students to learn to recite the Qur'an before performing prayers, and advise them every day before and after carrying out the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of verbal interaction in developing speaking competence classroom by analyzing verbal interactions between a lecturer and fourth-semester students at the University of Asahan. Using the Initiation–Response–Feedback (IRF) framework by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), data were collected through classroom observation and analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal a predominantly teacher-centered discourse, where lecturers control most exchanges, with limited space for student participation. Although some extended IRF sequences indicated potential for dialogic engagement, overall interaction lacked spontaneity and learner agency. The study recommends adopting more student-centered discourse strategies to foster meaningful participation and promote communicative competence in EFL classrooms

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the evolving role of local governments and the structuring of regional apparatuses within the framework of regional autonomy in Indonesia. Guided by Law Number 23 of 2014 on Regional Government, decentralization has positioned local governments as key actors in delivering effective, efficient, and participatory public services. However, despite this expanded authority, the implementation of regional autonomy continues to face substantial challenges, particularly in the institutional structuring of local government apparatuses that often remain misaligned with the diverse needs and characteristics of each region. Employing a qualitative research design with a policy analysis approach, this study draws on secondary data from policy documents, government evaluation reports, and academic literature published between 2020 and 2024. The findings reveal a significant gap between the normative frameworks established by national regulations and the practical realities at the local level. Many regional apparatuses are structured rigidly, mirroring centralized bureaucratic models, which undermines their ability to respond effectively to local socio-economic dynamics. The study proposes an ideal role model for local governments that integrates three core functions: as facilitators of development, providers of public services, and enablers of community participation. Additionally, it recommends restructuring regional apparatuses based on principles of flexibility, responsiveness, and actual regional needs. Practical strategies include strengthening institutional capacity through targeted training, conducting periodic organizational evaluations, and fostering collaboration between central and local governments. These efforts are essential to ensure that decentralization not only transfers authority but also enhances governance quality, reduces regional disparities, and supports the achievement of inclusive and sustainable development goals across Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how Instagram memes related to the Palestine-Israeli conflict convey political narratives through both denotative and connotative meanings. Using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, a descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyse 60 memes tagged with #Palestinememes and #Israelmemes. The analysis focused on the interaction between visual and textual elements and their role in constructing meaning. The findings reveal nine dominant themes, including state delegitimisation, opponent dehumanisation, and media propaganda. Denotation provides literal anchors, while connotation embeds ideological stances, such as the keffiyeh symbolising Palestinian identity or the Star of David representing Israeli statehood. The results indicate that memes serve as condensed political texts, allowing users to share emotionally impactful messages that shape public perceptions. The study highlights the role of memes in digital agenda-setting and emphasises the necessity of critical media literacy when engaging with political content on multimodal platforms.
