Abstract

The research focuses on analyzing the deixis used in the Al Jazeera English Inside Story episode “What’s Behind the Widespread Unrest in Indonesia?” and aims to examine what types of deixis are used and how these deictic expressions function pragmatically to depict Indonesia’s socio-political crisis in international media discourse. A qualitative descriptive approach is used to analyze 341 deictic expressions in the episode’s script using Levinson’s (1983) five types of deixis, i.e. personal, spatial, temporal, social and discourse. The findings show that personal deixis is the most prominent one, in which the perspective particularization and responsibility attribution by the interlocutors lead to mutual alignment (all participants’ identity alignments) and, however, time and discourse deixis strengthen the construction of collective immediacy and coherence of the narratives. Although the spatial and social deictics are the least frequent, they still employ the spatial grounding of the events and the indication of power relations hierarchy. The findings indicate that in the international media discourse, deixis functions not only as a referential strategy, but also as a pragmatic device in the context of political events framing and the manipulation of the audiences’ interpretations. These results extend previous deixis research by highlighting its role in global news reporting and offering insights into how linguistic choices contribute to the international framing of Indonesia’s political unrest.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of teachers’ teaching styles and students’ learning responses in two preschools in Malaysia that implement different learning approaches. Kindergarten A adopts an authoritative–assertive teaching style emphasizing structure, discipline, and consistent classroom routines, while Tadika B applies a permissive–creative style that promotes freedom of expression and play-based learning. The study employs a qualitative case study approach involving four preschool teachers (two from each kindergarten) and observations of a total of 48 students (24 students in each kindergarten). Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with teachers, and documentation analysis. The findings show that the authoritative–assertive approach in Kindergarten A fosters disciplined, organized, and instruction-responsive students who demonstrate higher levels of independence. In contrast, the permissive–creative style in Tadika B stimulates creativity, confidence, and self-expression but presents challenges in classroom management, particularly in maintaining discipline, lining up, and turn-taking. The study concludes that teaching style differences directly shape students’ learning responses, behavioral patterns, and socio-emotional development. These results highlight the need for a balanced approach that integrates both assertiveness and flexibility to create an optimal preschool learning environment. The findings offer practical implications for teachers, preschool administrators, and policymakers in designing developmentally appropriate instructional and classroom management strategies for early childhood education.

Abstract

This study investigates the speech acts in Hayle Bieber’s motherhood journey interview with WSJ.Style using Searle’s framework (1979), containing an illocutionary point, direction of fit, and psychological state. Employing qualitative content analysis, 34 units of utterances were identified. The discoverers emphasize that assertive (58,82%) dominates the result, followed by expressive (38,24%) in the second position. This determines that Hailey Bieber interviewed to share her experiences and express emotions as a new mom. In a case of direction of fit, most utterances are identified as word-to-world, portraying her tendency to describe events that correspond to reality. Hence, null fit emerges in expressive utterances to cover her personal emotions. Otherwise, psychological state represents belief and emotions, which are proven based on her statements on personal conviction and affective responses. Certainly, the findings expose that Hailey Bieber builds an identity as a reflective and emotionally attached mother. Furthermore, this study verifies how speech acts determine personal branding in celebrities’ media interviews and contributes to a deeper understanding of language use attached to emotions.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the main strategies in increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the tourism sector in Medan City through digitalization and technological innovation in the framework of an inclusive economy. The focus of the research includes the use of digital technology in marketing, optimization of online reservation systems, the use of e-commerce platforms, and the application of service automation to increase operational efficiency and MSME revenue. Digitalization is seen as a strategic solution to overcome MSMEs' dependence on conventional methods in marketing, production, and business management which has been the main obstacle in facing competition with large companies and imported products. Based on data from the Medan City Cooperative Office, there are around 18,000 active MSMEs, but the level of digital adoption still varies. This study uses a quantitative method with purposive sampling techniques on 100 MSMEs from the souvenir, culinary, and handicraft subsectors that have interacted with local digitalization programs. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with a Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) approach because the research variables were latent and construct-based. This approach allows testing of structural relationships as well as direct and indirect influences between variables. The novelty of this research lies in the development of the Conceptual Model of Inclusive Digitalization for SME Competitiveness (CDISC), which integrates digital inclusivity indicators—including digital access, digital literacy, and technological readiness—with MSME competitiveness indicators. The results of the research are expected to make a theoretical and practical contribution to the development of MSME digitalization policies that are sustainable, inclusive, and oriented towards increasing turnover, expanding market reach, and operational efficiency of MSMEs in Medan City

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how teachers and students teach and learn English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This is also changing how schools work. Current research primarily examines the advantages of various digital writing assistance tools; however, there has been insufficient exploration of ChatGPT, an AI-driven language model, in the context of Indonesian EFL. This study seeks to investigate the influence of ChatGPT on the writing proficiency of eighth-semester students in the English Education Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES). Using a qualitative design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with three subjects and subsequently analyzed thematically. The findings suggest that ChatGPT can enhance students' overall grammatical precision, lexical variety, conceptual organization, and writing confidence; nonetheless, there are apprehensions regarding dependency, originality, and contextual accuracy. The research findings demonstrate that, when employed critically and responsibly in EFL writing instruction, ChatGPT can function as an effective supplementary resource.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of principal leadership on interpersonal skills and the use of Canva media by teachers at SDN 6 Talang Muandau. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The sample in this study were all teachers at SDN 6 Talang Muandau, totaling 16 people. Data collection techniques were carried out by distributing questionnaires to 16 teachers who were respondents in this study and observation sheets. The research instrument includes three variables, namely principal leadership (X), interpersonal skills (Y₁), and use of Canva media (Y₂). Data analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS Statistic 25 through simple linear regression tests and partial t-tests. The results of the study showed that there was a positive and significant influence between principal leadership and teacher interpersonal skills, with a regression coefficient value of 0.984 and a significance value of 0.000 (0.05). In addition, principal leadership also had a positive and significant effect on the use of Canva media by teachers, with a regression coefficient value of 0.651 and a significance value of 0.030 (0.05). From these results, it can be concluded that the quality of the principal's leadership contributes directly to improving teachers' interpersonal skills and encouraging the use of digital media such as Canva in the learning process. This study recommends the importance of increasing the leadership capacity of principals and ongoing training for teachers in utilizing learning technology.

Abstract

This study examined how students’ religious beliefs relate to their motivation to learn English in four Islamic secondary schools in Central Java, Indonesia. Using a mixed-methods design, questionnaires were administered to 287 students, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven purposively selected participants. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between religious beliefs and English learning motivation (r = .308, p .001), and regression analysis indicated that religious beliefs explained 9.5% of the variance in motivation (R² = .095). Qualitative findings revealed that students positioned English within Islamic concepts of lifelong knowledge-seeking (thalab al-‘ilm) and global Islamic communication (da’wah), viewing English as compatible with, and supportive of, their religious identity rather than as a threat. These results suggest that, in Islamic school contexts, religious beliefs can function as a motivational resource for learning English when appropriately acknowledged in pedagogy.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of Good Corporate Governance (GCG), sales growth, capital structure, liquidity, and firm size on firm value in industrial sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the 2019–2023 period. A quantitative approach was employed using secondary data obtained from published financial statements. The sample consisted of 20 industrial companies selected through purposive sampling, resulting in 100 panel data observations. Panel data regression analysis was conducted using EViews 12. The findings indicate that capital structure has a positive and significant effect on firm value, while GCG, sales growth, liquidity, and firm size do not show a significant influence. Simultaneously, all independent variables jointly affect firm value. These results suggest that an optimal capital structure plays a crucial role in enhancing firm value by strengthening investor confidence and improving market perceptions. Therefore, managers in industrial sector companies are encouraged to carefully manage their capital structure to maintain financial stability and increase investment attractiveness in the capital market.
