Abstract

Smoking habits among school-age adolescents have the potential to cause negative health effects, particularly on physical fitness levels. This study aims to describe the physical fitness levels of smoking students in grade XI at State Senior High School 9 in Jambi City based on the results of the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test (TKJI) for ages 16–19 years. This study used a quantitative descriptive method. The study population consisted of all male students in grade XI at SMA Negeri 9 Kota Jambi in the 2025/2026 academic year, totaling 97 students. The study sample was determined using cluster random sampling, resulting in the selection of 20 male students in grade XI Phase F2 as research respondents. Data collection was conducted through smoking habit observation sheets to categorize students into active smokers, occasional smokers, and passive smokers, as well as through the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test (TKJI), which included a 60-meter run, pull-ups, a 60-second sit-up, vertical jump, and a 1200-meter run. Data analysis used quantitative descriptive analysis with percentage calculations. The results of the study show that the physical fitness level of smoking students in grade XI at State Senior High School 9 in Jambi City is generally low, with an average TKJI score of 13.7 (below average category). Based on smoking habits, active smokers had an average TKJI score of 11.25 (poor category), occasional smokers had an average score of 14.33 (moderate category), while passive smokers had an average score of 16.67 (moderate-good category). These results indicate that the more frequently students smoke, the lower their level of physical fitness.

Abstract

Strengthening students’ character has become a major priority in modern education, requiring relevant and applicable value internalization models. This study is motivated by the limitations of previous research that tends to address character education in a general manner and the lack of studies integrating Imam Zarkasyi’s educational values within public senior high school contexts. This research aims to describe the forms of value internalization, analyze the implementation of spiritual programs, and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies applied at SMAN 1 Makarti Jaya. The study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Research informants include the principal, spiritual program supervisors, Islamic education teachers, and students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques based on the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that the internalization of Imam Zarkasyi’s values is realized through structured religious habituation, teachers’ exemplary behavior as role models, and the strengthening of a school culture grounded in discipline and responsibility. These strategies have proven effective in enhancing students’ religiosity, integrity, and discipline, while also reinforcing a value-based and character-oriented school ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines novice English course teachers’ views on the use of anonymous peer feedback as a means of enhancing grammar awareness. The participants consisted of 14 newly appointed English teachers at a language course institution in Sidoarjo who took part in a grammar-awareness workshop within a Teacher Induction Program. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, the study gathered data through classroom observation and a post-workshop questionnaire. The results reveal that anonymous peer feedback fostered more active engagement, lowered participants’ anxiety, and supported reflective awareness of grammatical accuracy. In addition, the workshop enabled teachers to recognize recurring grammatical errors and encouraged self-regulated learning during professional development. These findings suggest that anonymous peer feedback can serve as an effective and supportive strategy for strengthening grammar awareness in English teacher induction and training contexts.

Abstract

Listening skills are fundamental abilities in English language learning, which include the ability to accurately receive, understand, and interpret spoken language. The aspects of listening assessed in this study were identifying main ideas, identifying specific information, making inferences, and spelling vocabulary. The Cake application is a language learning platform designed to support foreign language acquisition. Some features that can be used to teach students’ listening skills are video lessons, quizzes, and video history. In this research, only the teacher used the Cake application during lessons, while students were not permitted to access or use the application either during or outside classroom hours. This approach was intended to maintain instructional control and ensure that improvements resulted from guided use rather than independent practice. This research aims to investigate the effect of the use of Cake application in teaching listening skill and to find out the effect size of its implementation. This research uses a pre-experimental design with one-group pre-test and post-test. The research participants were tenth-grade students at SMAN 2 Teluk Keramat and the sample was selected using cluster random sampling which consisted of 28 students. The data was collected using tests given to students before and after the treatment. The results showed an increase in the average score from 68.21 on the pre-test to 75.18 on the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test showed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test (T = 17.5 t-critical = 46). The effect size value was 0.72, which indicates a large effect. This finding concludes that the use of the Cake application in teaching listening skill has a significant effect, therefore the Cake application can be used as an alternative medium for teaching English in the classroom

Abstract

This study investigates the extent of EFL students’ understanding of the suffix -en in English word formation at Tadulako University. This research employs a descriptive quantitative design, with data collected through a multiple-choice test and a questionnaire focusing on recognition, word formation, and meaning of the suffix -en. The data are analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that students experience low difficulty in recognizing the suffix -en, moderate difficulty in understanding its meaning, and high difficulty in word formation using the suffix -en. These results suggest that students’ difficulties lie mainly in productive and semantic aspects rather than in formal recognition, indicating the need for explicit instruction focusing on word formation practice and contextualized meaning analysis.

Abstract

Globalization has brought significant and multidimensional changes to the social life of the people of Simpang Baru Village, Binawidya District, Pekanbaru City, influencing patterns of behavior, interaction, and values through the rapid flow of information, technology, and global culture. This study aims to describe and analyze the impact of globalization on technology use, economic activities, cultural practices, and social interaction within the local community by employing a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving community members and local stakeholders to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The findings indicate that globalization has generated positive impacts, particularly in the technological aspect, where easier access to information and communication technologies has improved efficiency in daily activities and expanded community knowledge. Economically, globalization has opened new opportunities through digital platforms, small businesses, and access to broader markets, contributing to improved livelihoods and economic growth. In terms of lifestyle, the community has increasingly adopted modern ways of living characterized by practicality and global connectivity. However, the study also reveals several challenges arising from globalization, including weakened face-to-face social interaction as digital communication becomes more dominant, a gradual decline in local cultural values and traditions, especially among younger generations, and increased dependence on technology that reduces social sensitivity and communal solidarity. In conclusion, globalization presents both opportunities and challenges for the social life of the Simpang Baru community; therefore, it needs to be managed wisely so that its benefits can be maximized without neglecting local cultural identity and the preservation of social cohesion.
