The principle of frugality, beauty, coherence, and language feature as language varieties should be considered in language use in newspaper columns. Thus, various news can be studied from various approaches. News varietes redundancy is treated differently by the stylistics, semantics, discourse analysis and sociolinguistics because of different language design orietantion of each field. Stylistics and semantics approach language use in expalanative descriptive point of views that results in regarding redundancy in news varietes as normal and acceptable. In contrast, discourse analysis and stylistics approach the language use in normative prescriptive point views that results in regarding redundancy in news varietes as mistakes should be avoided.

Abstract

This article discusses how words from the Javanese language in Okky Madasari's novel Kerumunan Terakhir are preserved in the English translation of The Last Crowd by the same author. Translating from Javanese to English will certainly experience incompatibilities and strategies that can be used, but this does not happen because these words have their equivalents, and the novelist continues to use Javanese either directly, providing paraphrases, or include a translation in English. There are twelve data that use Javanese words, either at the word or sentence level. From the discussion of the overall data, it appears that the novelist tries to maintain the nuances of Javanese culture, especially Jogjakarta or more precisely, Puncak Suroloyo, Menoreh mountains, which of course is thick with the use of Javanese in their daily lives.

Abstract

This study analyzes the depression experienced by Tina Evans in the novel of The Eyes of Darkness written by Dean Koontz. The focus of this research is the symptoms of depression, the causes, and effects of depression, as well as the solution of the depression of Tina Evans. This study uses a qualitative research and applies a psychological approach. From this analysis, it can be found that there are two symptoms of depression experienced by Tina Evans: sadness and sleep disturbances. Meanwhile the cause of Tina's depression is the stress of losing someone she loves. She gets divorce as her husband, Michael Evans, has an affair. Trauma becomes her next cause of her depression, and the last cause is the spiritual terror. Her depression provides three effects: insomnia, lack of concentration, and nightmares. In overcoming her depression she manages it in various ways. There are six solutions in overcoming her depression. The first is to distract her mind by hard working. The next is to take significant responsibility for her work. The third is trying to divert her mind by consuming alcohol. The fourth is to think positively. The fifth is expressing herself to talk to other people, in this case, to her boyfriend. The last one is to accept the spiritual terror haunting her and find the facts about the death of her son Danny Evans with the help of Elliot Stryker.

Abstract

This study is intended to investigate the interpretant of five selected Batak Toba Songs about breaking the promise which causes breakup of love relationship. The research question is answered by applying Pierce's theory of signs or semiotics. It is used as the theoretical framework to show the relationship between the Object (Referent), Representation (words), and Interpretant, also known as the (reference). The object of the song is the brekup, the representamen is the lyrics of the five songs. The lyrics of these five songs are examined using semiotic analysis, and the meaning is interpreted based on Ogden and Richard's semantic triangle (1946). The finding shows there are nine signs of Interpretant found in the lyrics, they are heartbroken, sadness, loyalty, curse, profanity, sweet memory, gratuitous act and despair. It shows that there are some specific vocabulary in Batak language, like ripur, malengleng, matapor, magargar, etc.

Abstract

This analysis presents the emotional feeling found in Colleen Hoover’s It Ends with Us especially in the main character, Lily Bloom. The findings show that Lily Bloom’s way of coping with her trauma is learned from her experience during her teenage years and adult life. In this analysis, the writer focuses on Lily Bloom’s trauma as well in analysis of causes and effects of her trauma and her specific coping-mechanism. The writer uses a psychological approach to analyze the main character's trauma by using the theories of Cathy Caruth, Judith Herman and James Pennebaker. The analysis shows that Lily’s trauma reflected in the novel is when she finds comfort in shuffling cards and when she has hallucinations. The causes of trauma is the abusive cycle that her father does to her mother when she is a teenager. Lily Bloom's experiences with traumatic events have negative and positive effects. The negative effects include difficulties in relationships, self-conflict, and being affected by feelings. The positive effect is that she has finally realized, by looking at her life possibilities that she wants to explore things to make them better. She uses expressive writing as a specific coping mechanism to learn about her trauma.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Margo’s Identity in John Green’s Paper Town. The primary source is the novel Paper Town by John Green. To analyze the problems formulated above, the writer uses the theory of identity from Erik Erikson. The result of the study is Margo is an introverted person. She does not like to share her feelings with others. She always keeps her problems to herself. It makes other people create their perspectives about her and she cannot show her real side of her. Margo is also a smart girl. When she is a child, she does an investigation about the dead man. She manipulates the police and the woman in the apartment so she can get information about the dead man. Her decision to leave the town and never want to come back is a big decision. Her parents, sister, friends, and all the people live in that town, but she chooses to leave all of them forever. When she finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with her best friend, she starts to change her way of thinking. The finding of this thesis is identity is developed by individuals, but must be recognized and confirmed by others. In Paper Towns, those that are idealized are done so in a positive light. If people have a negative outlook on generalized portions of life, then when faced with individual forms, their negative outlook will translate and prevent people from truly being honest about whether something is good or bad for their identity.
