Abstract

The advancement of technology enables young learners to access and use devices that they can use for socialization and the accomplishment of school-related tasks. This study determined the use of technological devices among elementary learners in relation to their academic engagement. It was conducted in a private institution in Ozamiz City during the School Year 2023-2024. The descriptive-correlational design was used in the study. There were 120 Grades 1 to 6 learners and their teachers who served as the respondents selected through total enumeration. The Learners’ Use of Technological Devices Questionnaire and the Learners’ Academic Engagement Questionnaire were the researcher-made instruments used in gathering data. Mean, Standard Deviation and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient were used as statistical tools to analyze the data gathered. Results revealed the great extent of use of technological devices by learner-respondents. They also had a very high level of academic engagement. The extent of use of technological devices was generally not influential to the level of the learners’ academic engagement except on task completion. The use of technological devices has become a core part of the educational journey of young children. However, parents need to set limits on their children’s use of these devices, which may affect how well the young learners accomplish academic-related tasks.

Abstract

This research is based on the reality that Acehnese students staying in Malang often experience the phenomenon of cultural shock and negative labeling during their studies in Malang. The negative labeling they have received such as “ Aceh pungo, marijuana dealers, members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM)”. This labeling causes the lack of self-disclosure and lack of confidence of Acehnese students in their communication in Malang. This research aims to analyze the effects of cultural shock and negative labeling on self-disclosure and self-confidence of Acehnese students in their communication process in Malang. The research uses Winkelmann’s cultural shock theory and Edwin E. Lemert’s labeling theory. Utilizing a quantitative approach and a correlational method, the research targets members of IPPMA, comprising a population of 133 individuals. A sample size of 100 respondents was determined using the Slovin formula. The data are collacted by distributing questionnaires to respondents. After the data obtained, they are sequenced and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that cultural shock affects self-disclosure and self-confidence, while negative labeling does not affect self-disclosure and self-confidence. The simultaneous testing indicates that the combined effect of cultural shock and negative labeling on self-disclosure and self-confidence is weak.

Abstract

The ageing process often brings challenges in physical, psychological and social aspects that can affect the quality of life of the elderly. Non-formal education with a geragogy approach offers a significant solution to improve the quality of life of older people through learning. This article uses the literature review method to explore the concept, relevance, benefits and challenges in the application of geragogy to promote the quality of life of the elderly. The results show that the geragogy approach can reduce social isolation, improve cognitive capacity, and empower older adults socially and psychologically. However, geragogy implementation faces challenges such as financial barriers, age discrimination, and limited programme evaluation. This research highlights the importance of policy support and inclusive learning environments to maximise the positive impact of geragogy in improving the quality of life of older adults.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become necessary for students to complete online assignments, which threatens the creativity and originality of student thinking. This study explores the background, frequency, and strategies of AI usage from the perspective of management study program students at affordable universities. The qualitative results show that all students use AI with very high frequency. Students consider using AI for (1) practicality, (2) speed, (3) accuracy, and (4) information sources. Students have become wise and intelligent in using AI and hope for the legitimacy of AI as an assistive tool. Students do not feel guilty about using AI as long as they do not engage in full plagiarism and cite other information sources beyond AI. The formation of a new paradigm or sub-paradigm is highly recommended, where AI is encouraged as a reference source and the learner as a quote. Further research development is suggested to use quantitative methods to examine the relationship between practicality, speed, accuracy, and information source on students' assignment outcomes using AI. It is also highly recommended to conduct further research on whether AI can be considered an official citation source and to make AI an official assistive tool for students at affordable universities.

Abstract

Research has always been considered one of the most challenging aspects of being a student. This study explored the challenges encountered by college students in conducting research in one of the higher education institutions in Ozamiz City during S.Y. 2023-2024. This study utilized a qualitative approach and adopted a case study research design. Purposive sampling was applied to 17 participants. Data elicitation was achieved through face-to-face, in-depth interviews that used a researcher made interview guide. Yin's approach suggests that three themes emerge from the data. These are the initiation, design, and execution phases, multifaceted challenges of students, navigation of methodological, ethical, and analytical challenges, and strategies for overcoming challenges to access literature, collect data, analyze, interpret, and communicate. The use of university resources and academic databases provides necessary information and support for accessing relevant literature and data. Clear communication and proactive problem-solving ensure that students can address issues promptly and make informed decisions. Together, these strategies significantly aid students in overcoming research obstacles.
