Abstract

Stunting is a condition in which toddlers have a length or height below the standard for their age, reflecting chronic malnutrition. Various strategies have been implemented to address this issue, including the provision of complementary feeding (MP-ASI) using locally available food sources to ensure age-appropriate nutrient intake. According to the Auxiliary Public Health Center in Turirejo Village, Gresik Regency, the prevalence of stunting has declined in recent years; however, in 2022, 30 toddlers were still identified as stunted, making it a continuing public health concern. The intervention employed a structured approach consisting of problem identification, development of a problem-solving framework, pre-test assessment, health education and practical training, and post-test evaluation. As a practical solution, a demonstration of complementary food preparation using moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves was conducted. Moringa leaves were processed into moringa pudding as a protein-rich supplementary food for stunted toddlers. Pre-test and post-test results were presented in percentage form, and differences in knowledge among mothers of toddlers and posyandu cadres regarding stunting, complementary feeding, and exclusive breastfeeding were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The findings indicated a p-value < 0.05, demonstrating a significant improvement in knowledge after the educational session. Participants were able to prepare and serve moringa pudding according to the demonstrated recipe. This socialization and local food–based complementary feeding initiative serves as a community learning strategy to prevent further increases in stunting prevalence in Turirejo Village.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an acute disease that can lead to death. Mortality cases caused by this disease are still reported in Indonesia, indicating that DHF remains a significant public health concern that requires continuous vigilance and prevention efforts. The flagship community service program conducted by the Community Service Program (KKN) group aimed to improve community knowledge regarding the causes, prevention, and management of DHF. The methods employed included lectures and discussions. The lecture session covered the theoretical aspects of DHF, including its etiology, modes of transmission, prevention strategies, and management. This was followed by a demonstration on how to construct a mosquito trap, which was subsequently practiced directly by community health cadres and PKK mothers. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated using a pretest–posttest design. The results demonstrated an increase in participants’ knowledge regarding DHF and its prevention, with the average pretest score of 85 improving to an average posttest score of 100.

Abstract

Aging is a degenerative process that leads to a decline in physiological functions and increases the risk of noncommunicable diseases. Obesity is particularly prevalent among individuals aged 55 to 64 years, with contributing factors including diet, physical activity, and lifestyle. This article reports the results of a community service program aimed at educating the elderly on healthy living to prevent obesity at Yayasan Pondok Lansia Bahagia Surabaya. The program was conducted on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 08:00 to 10:30 AM at the foundation’s secretariat. Target participants included 25 elderly and pre-elderly women who regularly attend the foundation’s Islamic study groups and exercise sessions. The activities utilized counseling and practical methods, including health education and group gymnastics. Participants engaged enthusiastically, noting the material was both interesting and beneficial for their health. Evaluation through pre-test and post-test assessments demonstrated a measurable increase in participants’ knowledge after the program. This community service effectively enhanced awareness of healthy behaviors and obesity prevention among the elderly. The findings suggest that combining educational sessions with practical exercise can improve knowledge retention and encourage the application of healthy lifestyle practices. The program also highlights the importance of continuous community-based interventions in supporting elderly health and promoting sustainable habits to prevent obesity.

Abstract

Air quality in Surabaya is seriously challenged by motor vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and lack of green space, which have a direct impact on public health, especially on the respiratory system, which can cause diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. To overcome this, a community service program using lecture and simulation methods was carried out, involving 40 male and female students at the Islamic boarding school. The lecture lasted 40 minutes with PPT and poster media, as well as pre- and post-test questionnaires to measure the increase in participants' knowledge. In addition, the simulation was carried out in collaboration with the Islamic boarding school in planting bamboo palms on May 11, 2024. The results showed a significant increase in students' knowledge regarding the benefits of bamboo palms as an effort to prevent air pollution, with a significant difference in pre- and post-test scores (p <0.05). The lecture approach accompanied by visual media has proven effective in increasing understanding of the role of bamboo palms in reducing pollution in the Islamic boarding school environment, so that this education has succeeded in increasing students' awareness of the importance of efforts to overcome air pollution.

Abstract

Self-awareness has been identified as a key modality in efforts to prevent mental illness in adolescents, especially those in boarding school settings. Adolescents are highly vulnerable to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress due to biological changes, environmental pressures, and social stigma associated with mental disorders. Methods: This community service activity was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Zainul Hasan, Probolinggo, using the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) method. The participants consisted of 28 santris who participated in a socialization on the importance of self-awareness in preventing mental illness. This activity involved filling out pretest and posttest questionnaires to measure changes in participants' knowledge levels before and after the socialization. Results: The results showed a significant increase in santri's understanding of the concepts of self-awareness and mental health. The pre-test results showed that 20 respondents (71.5%) had a poor assessment, 5 respondents (17.8%) had a sufficient assessment, and 3 respondents (10.7%) had a good assessment of knowledge about mental health in adolescence. As for the post-test results after counseling, where 21 respondents (75%) had a good assessment, in this case there was an increase from 3 respondents to 21 respondents, an increase of 18 respondents. Conclusion: This finding confirms the importance of self- awareness education as a preventive measure in addressing mental health problems in adolescents in pesantren, where access to formal mental health services tends to be limited.

Abstract

Gunungsari Village, renowned for its camping and natural tourism attractions nestled amidst mountains and rivers, faces potential hazards such as snake bites and fractures resulting from falls. Prompt and appropriate first aid and treatment are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with these incidents. However, there is a notable gap in public knowledge regarding snake bite management and the availability of antivenom, which can exacerbate mortality rates. In response, the community service team from Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences, The University of Muhammadiyah Semarang initiated a training program aimed at educating locals about snake bite management and splinting techniques. Fifteen participants, comprising members of the disaster management agency team in the Boja area, engaged in the training sessions. While possessing foundational knowledge, participants acknowledged the novelty and importance of information regarding snake venom management. Pre-training assessments revealed an average knowledge score of 68, which significantly increased to 84 post-training, indicating a substantial improvement in understanding. Additionally, simulation exercises assessing splint application demonstrated commendable proficiency among participants, with an average score of 82. The training initiative underscores the significance of enhancing community preparedness in managing medical emergencies such as snake bites and fractures. The newfound knowledge and skills acquired through the training sessions equip participants with the ability to administer timely and effective first aid in emergency situations. Continuous training efforts are recommended to sustain and further enhance the preparedness of Gunungsari Village residents in addressing medical emergencies in the future.

Abstract

Noise is a problem that is often found in every industry. The use of machines and tools that support the production process has the potential to cause noise. Noise is the unwanted sound of a business or activity in a certain level and time that can cause disturbances to human health and environmental comfort. UD RiWood is a wood industry in Sidoarjo district that produces goods in the form of pallets. Based on the identification results, there are noise hazards in the production process caused by production equipment. Many workers are not aware of this so that the socialization of noise hazards in the workplace is carried out. Educational activities use the lecture socialization method by delivering noise hazard material, interactive discussions, and providing educational media in the form of posters attached to the workplace area. Practitioners also use the interview method before and after using a test interview instrument (pre-test and post-test). The purpose of this educational activity is to increase workers' knowledge and awareness of the dangers of noise in the workplace. The results of the educational activities that have been carried out show that there is a significant increase in the results of the previous pre-test. The success indicator of these educational activities is the increase in general knowledge about occupational safety and health and related to the dangers of noise in the workplace which is measured by evaluation through a post-test conducted by practitioners.

Abstract

The main problem faced by Burhanul Hidayah Islamic Boarding School is that awareness of the existence and impacts of poor waste management remains low due to a lack of knowledge and understanding about waste and how to manage it. The boarding school, which has more than 380 students, has the potential to implement independent and sustainable waste management. Community service activities at Burhanul Hidayah Islamic Boarding School include training on waste management to increase students' awareness. This training covers sorting and classifying waste into organic and non- organic types. After sorting, students receive training on processing organic waste into fertilizer that can be used to enrich the soil within the boarding school environment. Non-organic waste, such as coffee wrappers, detergent packaging, and similar items, is processed into creative products that are valuable, economical, and usable in daily activities. Based on the results of the waste education and processing activities, it can be concluded that there has been an increase in students' awareness and knowledge of waste management. Students are now capable of transforming both organic and non- organic waste into products with added value.
