Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the Visual Semantic method (VSS) in enhancing students' acquisition of general vocabulary, as well as to document the reactions of junior high school students towards the use of the VSS method in their vocabulary learning process. The present study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing classroom action research (CAR) as the chosen research design. The data collection methods employed by the author encompassed observation, interviews, and documentation. The present study was carried out at a junior high school located in Indonesia. The observation took place in a single classroom. The participants in this study consisted of six students enrolled in the class. The results of the study indicated that the implementation of the Vocabulary Self-Selection (VSS) strategy resulted in favorable outcomes in terms of student engagement. Specifically, students exhibited increased levels of activity and autonomy in their efforts to comprehend unfamiliar words. Moreover, students displayed a heightened curiosity towards previously unknown vocabulary encountered in the text. Additionally, the classroom environment fostered a more collaborative approach to learning. Furthermore, the students expressed a belief that engaging in group discussions proved to be highly significant as it facilitated their completion of the VSS group chart and enhanced their comprehension of the book. Regarding the challenges encountered by students in vocabulary acquisition through the use of VSS, several obstacles were identified. Firstly, students reported encountering a large number of unfamiliar words, which hindered their progress. Additionally, they expressed difficulty in comprehending the meaning of words within the context of the text. Furthermore, students acknowledged that they were encountering vocabulary that had not been previously taught in their educational curriculum, resulting in a time-consuming process of deciphering the meanings of these unfamiliar terms.

Abstract

Cultural diversity frequently causes a number of challenging issues. Ethnic conflicts frequently arise in Indonesia as a result of a lack of tolerance and respect for others. Ethnic conflicts occur not only in adults but frequently involve school-age children. Therefore, multicultural education is needed. One of the important tools in learning activity is textbook. Thus, this study aimed to explain the cultural dimension predominantly presented in the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris Untuk SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas 10. This study implemented a qualitative method and the data were analyzed by using Critical Discourse Analysis. In addition, this study also adopted Huberman, Miles, and Sladana (2014) model of qualitative data analysis which consists of four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed there were 60 cultural contents that cover the four dimensions of culture; Products, Practices, Perspectives, and Persons in the textbook. Furthermore, the most dominant cultural dimension found is Products with the frequency of 36, whereas the second most frequently occurring element is Persons which is 21. Perspectives is the third dimension that often occurs with the frequency of 2, followed by  Practices with a frequency of 1. This finding suggests further research is needed on teaching methods, strategies, or techniques teachers use in the classroom to teach cultural diversity in the textbook.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether using comic strips in instructional activities improves students' reading comprehension, particularly when it comes to narrative texts. This study employed a quasi-experimental design in a quantitative manner. Students from MA Ma'arif Roudlotuth Tholibin, with two sample classes of 20 students each, made up the study's population. There was an experimental class and a control class assigned to both classes. The pre- and post-test methods were used to gather the data. The computation in this study indicated that comic strips are a useful teaching and learning tool for narrative text. The experimental class's mean post-test score, which was 70.40 while the control class's score was 68.17, confirmed this conclusion. This suggests that the post-test mean for the experiment class (70.40>68.17) was higher than the control class's. As a result, the statistics showed that 1.937 > 1.67= tobserve > ttable, proving that The Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis is rejected.. In conclusion, using comic strips to instruct students in reading comprehension of narrative texts is an effective strategy to raise their reading skill.
