Abstract

The kacak technique is one of the techniques in making shibori. This technique is generally only used to produce shibori with one color. This is the basis for the creation of this work, namely, to produce three colors in shibori fabric with the kacak technique. Therefore, the purpose of creating this work is to find a new application of the kacak technique in shibori. The results of this finding are then used as the main material in the creation of ready-to-wear deluxe, which is combined with an angklung motif stamp batik as a complement. To realize this work, the creation method used is the three-stage design process, including problem definition and research, creative exploration, and implementation. The results of this creation are in the form of 4 (four) ready-to-wear deluxe looks presented at the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MF) 2024 at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the function of Batak Toba sacred songs in the Charismatic worship of GBI Mawar Saron, Simalingkar B, and in the worship of HKBP Pardomuan, Simalingkar B, Medan. It also seeks to identify and compare the meanings contained in Batak Toba sacred songs within Charismatic and HKBP traditional worship, as well as to examine how the functions and meanings of these songs transform when used in different worship contexts. The researcher employs a qualitative-descriptive approach using observation, interviews, and documentation conducted directly at the selected research sites. The theoretical framework applied in this study includes Alan P. Merriam’s theory of the functions of music and Jean-Jacques Nattiez’s musical meaning analysis. The findings indicate that there are significant changes in musical style, song presentation, and worship structure, revealing differences in the liturgical and expressive functions between the two churches. Nevertheless, Batak Toba sacred songs continue to serve as a medium of spiritual unity and cultural identity among the congregations. Through this study, the researcher hopes to contribute to the field of ethnomusicology and enhance cross-traditional understanding within the practice of Christianity in Indonesia.

Abstract

The fashion industry innovates with the concept of convertible fashion to meet consumer needs for flexibility and sustainability. This creation research explores the application of this concept to a ready-to-wear deluxe collection through the application of resin embellishment and fabric painting inspired by the Spider Lily flower. The urgency of this research lies in the potential for increasing consumption efficiency, extending the life cycle of clothing, and offering higher functional and aesthetic values. The purpose of this research is to produce an innovative, versatile, and artistic fashion collection by combining convertible fashion with resin embellishment techniques and spider lily-inspired fabric painting. To achieve this goal, this research uses a design thinking approach consisting of five stages, namely: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This approach was then adapted into six stages by adding the embodiment stage, so it can be called design thinking plus. The result is three sets of clothing that can be combined into nine different looks that offer style flexibility for the wearer.

Abstract

This study examines the preservation of the Jaran Kepang art form by Sanggar Wahyu Satrio Putro in Binjai City using a qualitative approach. The objectives of the research include: (1) adaptation and innovation without compromising traditional values, and (2) passing down Jaran Kepang to younger generations. Jaran Kepang is a traditional Javanese art that portrays the skills of horseback warriors through dynamic and captivating dance movements, accompanied by gamelan music. Although this art form has existed since the Majapahit Kingdom, its development outside Java, including in Binjai City, North Sumatra, reflects a cultural transformation. The study applies a qualitative method through non-participant observation, interviews, video recordings, and audio documentation. The findings reveal that the preservation of Jaran Kepang by Sanggar Wahyu Satrio Putro is not merely an act of safeguarding cultural heritage, but also a strategic effort to maintain the relevance of traditional arts in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of Simalungun popular songs in traditional wedding ceremonies in Pematang Raya Village through textual and musical approaches. The research focuses on three main songs: Sitalasari, Etah Mangalop Boru, and Horas Sayur Matua. A qualitative descriptive method was applied using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The findings reveal that Simalungun popular songs function as a medium of cultural communication, a form of prayer and blessing, and a symbol of respect toward social structures and customary values. Musically, the songs use diatonic major scales, moderate tempos (85–100 bpm), and simple rhythmic patterns that reflect the sacred and harmonious atmosphere of the ceremony. The transformation from traditional instruments such as gondrang bolon to modern ones like keyboards and guitars does not diminish their cultural meaning. Instead, these songs embody a creative adaptation that preserves traditional values while embracing modern influences. They play a vital role in maintaining Simalungun cultural identity, strengthening social cohesion, and ensuring the continuity of local traditions amid modernization.

Abstract

In general, Kuntilanak is known as the vengeful spirit of a woman who died during pregnancy or childbirth. In Indonesian horror films, Kuntilanak is typically portrayed as a terrifying female ghost seeking revenge after experiencing an unnatural death. However, the Kuntilanak Universe films produced by MVP Pictures offer a different representation. Here, Kuntilanak is depicted as a dual-natured female entity, both frightening and humanized, who can be summoned through the ancient Javanese chant Sekar Durma, titled Lingsir Wengi, and used as a medium for the Mangkujiwo cult's wealth rituals—inspired by the Kuntilanak Universe films, including Kuntilanak (2006), Kuntilanak 3 (2008), Kuntilanak (2018), Kuntilanak 2 (2019), Kuntilanak 3 (2022), Mangkujiwo (2020), and Mangkujiwo 2 (2023), the artist aimed to represent this duality through artwear design. This creative work is significant as no designer has previously explored the Kuntilanak phenomenon from the Kuntilanak Universe films as a concept for artwear. Therefore, the objective of this project is to present a novel form of artwear inspired by these films. The creative process follows four stages: exploration to understand the character and visuals from the films, experimentation with materials and techniques, realization of the designs into an artwear collection, and evaluation to ensure conceptual relevance. The outcome is a series of three artwear looks presented through a fashion cinematic
