Abstract

Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed," first published in 1968, is a seminal work in educational theory that critiques traditional educational practices and offers a revolutionary framework for learning. Freire challenges the "banking model" of education, where students are passive recipients of knowledge, advocating instead for a "problem-posing" model that emphasizes dialogue, critical thinking, and active engagement. Central to Freire’s pedagogy is the concept of critical consciousness, or conscientização, which involves developing an awareness of social, political, and economic forces that shape one’s life. Freire argues that education should be a collaborative process that empowers students to question and transform oppressive structures in their society. By fostering a more participatory and democratic learning environment, Freire’s approach aims to liberate both students and educators from traditional hierarchies and promote social justice. "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" has significantly influenced educational practices and social movements worldwide, emphasizing the role of education in achieving personal and collective emancipation. Despite criticisms regarding its feasibility and implementation, Freire’s work remains a foundational text in critical pedagogy, providing valuable insights into the potential of education as a transformative tool for societal change.

Abstract

This research examines the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the challenges faced in achieving satisfactory conviction rates and employing effective investigation methods for business robbery cases. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study involved a comprehensive literature review and structured interviews with fingerprint experts and data processors affiliated with the Carletonville SAPS. The primary aim was to investigate and analyze potential solutions to the identified issues. The study reveals that the implementation of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) represents a viable solution. The findings indicate that AFIS technology has the potential to significantly enhance the investigation and prevention of various criminal activities, including theft, business robberies, and homicides. AFIS facilitates the rapid matching of biometric markers and fingerprints, enabling the swift identification and linking of suspects to specific crimes. While acknowledging both the strengths and limitations of AFIS, the research underscores its substantial potential to revolutionize law enforcement practices. By integrating AFIS, law enforcement agencies can achieve notable improvements in the efficiency and accuracy of criminal investigations. This research provides a foundational step toward the development and implementation of effective strategies for crime prevention and combat in South Africa.

Abstract

Excessive sugar consumption in children has become an increasingly worrying public health issue, especially due to the increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other diseases. The government has an important role in monitoring and controlling the sugar content in food consumed by children through various policies and regulations. This paper examines the role of the Indonesian government in monitoring sugar content in children's food, including the policies that have been implemented, the challenges faced, and evaluating the effectiveness of these policies. The results of the study show that although measures such as sugar content labeling and education campaigns have been implemented, the effectiveness of these policies is still limited by various factors, such as food industry resistance, low public awareness, and limited supervision. Based on policy analysis in other countries, such as the UK and Mexico, it is recommended that the Indonesian government consider implementing additional policies, such as a sugar tax, as well as strengthening public education and monitoring existing regulations. In conclusion, the government's role in monitoring sugar content in children's food is very important, however still needs strengthening and improvement so that the goal of protecting children's health can be achieved effectively.

Abstract

The food security challenge has affected many households in South Africa, as some households struggle to maintain a healthy diet and adequate food access. Many households in South Africa experience food hunger and starvation, in particular households in rural areas which is often characterised by large family groups. The pressing challenge encountered by policy makers is ensuring that all households in South Africa are food secure, as it stands this has not been achieved. Despite pro-active initiatives such as the Integrated food security, nutrition program, zero hunger programme and social grants, households in South Africa continue to be negatively impacted by food insecurity, especially in the awake of climate change. The paper aims to argue that food security challenges faced by households in South Africa could be addressed if strategies are formulated not only to secure the individual but the entire household. The paper analyses three literature themes namely: food security globally, accessed food security challenges in South Africa and finally critiqued food initiatives that potentially play a role in household food security. The findings of the paper conclude that food security initiative programs are available in South Africa, however they often rely on monetary terms of ensuring food security, the social grants for example are targeted to some household members not everyone in the household. The paper suggests that targeting certain household members is not a comprehensive approach in addressing food security at household level. Lessons drawn from literature, provide a way forward towards policy effective and efficient interventions that seek to foster household food security interventions while observing nature-based agro-forestry initiatives that are community-led.

Abstract

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicides within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are pervasive, yet often overlooked, problems affecting students and faculty worldwide. The objectives of this study were three-folded, namely; 1) The effects of GBV on victims/survivours, 2) The global recent trends of Gender-Based Violence and femicides, and; 3) The connection between GBV, sexual abuse and silenced students on campus. This qualitative study adopted the non-empirical research design: Systematic review to presents a comprehensive literature study on this phenomenon. The sample data was restricted from 2010 to 2024 (not in sequence). The inductive Thematic Content Analysis (TCA) analysed the collected data, to identified the two (02) study themes, emanating from the reviewed literature studies and the applied theoretical framework (Rational Choice Theory - RTC). This was done to shed light on its multifaceted nature, encompassing physical, psychological, financial and sexual abuse. This study confirmed the alarming cases of GBV and femicides cases within the South African HEIs, the complex dynamics perpetuating various violence were uncovered, including the institutional complicity, power imbalances, and systemic failures. This study also emphasises enduring trauma experienced by survivours and the urgent need for support and failing justice. It is recommended that proactive recommendations for policy reform and awareness campaigns remains essential to enforce efficient campus culture that actively condemns GBV and femicide against students. It is envisaged that by bringing the existing issues forefront can possibly stimulate dialogue, and change can be inducted to ultimately create safe and inclusive educational environments for all interested stakeholders.
