Abstract

Infectious diseases are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality globally, especially in developing countries. One of the most common and dangerous pathogenic bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus, that can cause a range of infections by mild skin problems to life-threatening diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of methanol extract of brown algae Sargassum vulgare against S. aureus. This laboratory-based experimental research was conducted. Extraction was carried out utilizing the maceration technique with methanol solvent. Phytochemical screening was performed to detect alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and steroids. Antibacterial activity was tested utilizing the disk diffusion technique at extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, with chloramphenicol as the positive control and aqua pro injection as the negative control. The outcomes performed that the extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins, but not steroids. However, no inhibition zone was observed at any extract concentration against S. aureus. In conclusion, although the extract contained bioactive compounds, it did not perform antibacterial effectiveness against S. aureus.

Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The analysis showed a significant relationship between maternal knowledge and stunting prevention (p = 0.001), as well as a significant relationship between maternal attitudes and stunting prevention (p = 0.003). Mothers with good knowledge and positive attitudes were more likely to take stunting prevention measures. In conclusion, maternal knowledge and attitudes regarding the use of local foods are significantly related to stunting prevention measures. Therefore, ongoing education is needed to increase knowledge and foster positive attitudes in mothers in an effort to reduce stunting rates in the community.

Abstract

Breast milk (ASI) is strongly recommended as the sole intake for infants during the first six months of life. It serves as the primary and optimal source of nutrition for babies. Consuming additional nutritious foods is crucial during the breastfeeding period, as it can support breast milk production. Edamame has the potential to be a nutritional source that supports maternal health due to its phytosterol content, which contributes to additional nutrition and can help increase breast milk volume. This study aims to identify the contribution of edamame decoction in supporting breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers from the second day to the first week postpartum with insufficient milk flow in Kertonegoro Village, Jember. The research design used was a pre-experimental approach with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, involving 15 breastfeeding mothers between days 2 to 7 postpartum. The study was conducted over a two-week period and employed the Wilcoxon statistical test for analysis. The results showed a p-value of 0.001, indicating that there is a significant effect of edamame decoction on breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers on days 2–7 in Kertonegoro Village, Jember. Health workers are expected to provide education about adequate nutrition for postpartum mothers during the breastfeeding period, as it can support the achievement of government programs aimed at increasing the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract

The most common complaint experienced by mothers during the first stage of labor, active phase, is pain, which can trigger excessive stress and anxiety. This condition may lead to increased respiratory rate and pulse, potentially disrupting oxygen supply from the placenta to the fetus. One simple method that can help reduce labor pain is the endorphin massage technique. The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in pain levels experienced by mothers in the first stage of labor, active phase, before and after receiving endorphin massage. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. It involved 20 laboring mothers in the active phase of the first stage who experienced discomfort ranging from severe (scale 7–9) to very severe (scale 10). Measurements taken before the endorphin massage intervention showed an average pain intensity score of 5 and a maximum of 10. After the endorphin massage was administered, the average pain intensity decreased to 4 with a maximum of 9. There was a notable difference indicating a reduction in pain levels among mothers in the active phase of the first stage of labor before and after receiving endorphin massage intervention.

Abstract

Hypertension and hyperuricemia are two metabolic conditions that frequently coexist and may lead to cardiovascular complications. This study was motivated by the high prevalence of hypertension and elevated uric acid levels among individuals in their productive age, particularly in high-stress occupations such as police officers. The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between hypertension and uric acid levels among police officers aged 30–60 years at the Pasuruan Police Department. This quantitative research used a cross-sectional design with an analytic approach. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select 60 respondents, and data were collected through blood pressure and uric acid level examinations. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results showed that 83.3% of respondents had hypertension and 28.3% had hyperuricemia. The Chi-Square test indicated a significant relationship between hypertension and uric acid levels (p = 0.005). It can be concluded that there is a relationship between hypertension and uric acid levels, where individuals with hypertension are more likely to experience hyperuricemia. It is recommended that regular monitoring of blood pressure and uric acid levels be conducted among individuals in their productive age, along with the adoption of a healthy lifestyle as a promotive and preventive measure against further complications.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases, often occurring without clear symptoms, making early detection difficult. One of the risk factors contributing to the occurrence of hypertension is an increase in Body Mass Index (BMI). Individuals with high BMI, particularly those categorized as overweight or obese, tend to have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure. This study aims to determine the relationship between hypertension and BMI among police officers aged 30 to 60 years, considering that this profession involves high levels of stress and workload, which can also impact cardiovascular health. The research employed a cross-sectional design with a total of 60 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between hypertension and BMI (p = 0.000), where the majority of respondents with hypertension had BMI values classified as overweight or obese. Therefore, regular monitoring of body weight and blood pressure is highly recommended, especially for high-risk professions such as police officers, to prevent more serious health complications in the future.
