Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe figurative language and meaning of figurative language.The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method which analyzes figurative language.The result of this research is to find the figurative language song lyric Lenka Kripac. The results are repetisi with percentage 22,7%. Antisipasi, koreksio, sinisme, and koreksio are 2,3%.

Abstract

Maxims are rules for determining whether the speaker is being cooperative in a conversation or not. When a speaker refuses to be cooperative during a conversation, this is known as flouting of maxim. This research focuses on flouting maxims uttered by the characters in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. The objective of this research is to identify the types of flouting maxims contained in this movie. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that the researcher found 41 utterances that flout the maxim in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. There are flouting the maxim of quality (6 data), flouting the maxim of quantity (16 data), flouting the maxim of relevance (15 data), and flouting the maxim of manner (9 data). The number of utterances and the number of flouting maxims used are different because one utterance may include more than one flouting maxim.

Abstract

The research aims at determining the effect of using Genre-Based Approach towards students’ skill on writing recount text at SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta. It uses quantitative design by giving treatment of the application of Genre-Based Approach to the experiment class. The population was all students of eight graders at SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta and was taken 50 of them as the samples. They were divided into two classes; the experiment class consists of 25 students and the control class consists of 25 students. The result shows that the mean of the control class is 69.78, the median is 70, and the mode is 65.94 with standard deviation values is 7.63. While, the mean of the experiment class is 81.06, the median is 81.35 and the mode is 101.5 with standard deviation values is 10.1. The Fobserved is 1.78 < Ftable 1.98, meaning that both classes are homogenous. The hypothesis test tobserved is 4.44 > ttable 2.01, which means that H1 is accepted which confirms there is an effect of using Genre-Based Approach towards students’ writing skill on recount text at SMP PGRI 9 East Jakarta.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the Effect of Vocabulary Mastery on Students’ Writing Skill. The approach of this study is quantitative. The research is conducted at SMP Negeri 46 Jakarta, the total sample of this research followed by 20 students of grade VIII at SMP Negeri 46 Jakarta. The sampling technique is probability random sampling. The techniques of collecting data used are test to get the vocabulary mastery score and writing skill to know of students’ writing skill of description text. The techniques of analyzing data used simple linear regression and significant test. The result of analysis shows that there is positive effect students’ vocabulary mastery on students’ writing skill of grade VIII at SMP Negeri 46 Jakarta. This is obtained from the data, the value of Fcount > Ftable is a value of Fcount 5,67 ≥ Fcount 4.74, which show Fcount > Ftable.Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Students’ Writing Skill

Abstract

In our daily life, we are using language to communicate with each other. A lot of linguistic aspects in a language, one of them is called figurative language. Figurative language is a word or phrase that has an isolated meaning from its exact definition. People usually use figurative language to emphasize or modify their sentences, so their sentences don't sound like something you often hear; making their sentences more unique has a lot of advantages, just imagine everyone using the same structure, emphasis, and the same emotion in their sentences, it's very horrible. Figurative language is also often used in stand-up comedy. Stand-up comedy is simply a single performed comedy actor in front of the audience.

Abstract

The research aims to describe and to analyze the forms of code-mixing used by Boy William on Vlog #Dibalikpintu. This study was a descriptive qualitative method and human research is the main instrument of this study. In collecting the data, this study utilized observation and documentation methods. This study employed content analysis which focused on analyzing the forms of code-mixing which were defined by Suwito (1983). The result of this study: In the word form, there are 19 data found, (15 nouns, 2 verbs, 1 adjective, 1 question word). In the phrase form, there are 19 data found, (17 noun phrases, 2 adjective phrases). In the baster form, there are 5 data found, (1 noun as a form of gerund suffixation, 3 noun suffixation, 1 verb suffixation). In the word reduplication form, there are 2 data found, (1 noun, 1 compound noun). In the idiom form, there are 2 data found, (1 formal idiom, 1 informal idiom). In the clause form, there are 25 data found, (8 noun clauses, 14 verb clauses, 3 adjective clauses).

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of taboo words, to identify the functions of taboo, and to observe the subtitling strategy in the translation of taboo words in Indonesian subtitles in Sex Education Season 2 TV Series. The source of data in this research is the dialogue that contained taboo words in the English subtitle and the Indonesian subtitle script in the Sex Education TV Series season 2. The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method. The first result of this study show there were 201 data can be classified as types of taboo words where the highest type is sexual activity 70 data (35%), and the lowest type is lavatory 38 data (19%). The second result shows the 201 data can be categorized as a function of taboo words where the highest type is surprise 60 data (30%), and the lowest type is joking 15 data (8%). The most common use of sexual activity taboo words is to express anger and/or frustration. Furthermore, the lavatory is commonly used to express surprise as well as to identify the descriptive-evaluative function. Furthermore, the author discovered 5 of 10 subtitling strategies in this study, which included expansion, paraphrasing, transfer, condensation, and deletion. The transfer strategy is the most frequently used in translated taboo words, while expansion is the least frequently used.

Abstract

Listening is something that everyone can do it, especially now that there are many media that use English as a basis for learning an aspect. The habit of listening to music, or sounds from films that use English makes the addition of vocabulary increases with time as a result of these habits. Regardless of what genres are listened to and what kind of films are served, if we often listen to something that is used in English, it will increase our understanding of the vocabulary we have. With many songs or films that use English, it will make our ears respond to the brain for what it receives. Because when we often listen to something using English the brain will respond quickly to whatever it gets. This makes the brain store more vocabulary that it receives. Therefore, from a habit will lead to a lot of understanding of what it gives to the brain.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to reveal sincerity of main character in “The Vow” movie direct by Michael Sucsy. This research used qualitative method to obtain data through the way human’s things and behave as social being. This phenomenon is used as a group of data and analyzed for trends. The writer will analyze the data by using text analysis approach. Text analysis particularly oriented toward ethnography methods or grounded theory. It means that all the methods of test analysis which somehow approach texts by means of categories, since it no longer a matter only of the communicative content of the text but also their linguistic form. Based on the research sincerity of main character in The Vow movie direct by Michale Sucsy, the writer found 32 data invention which divides into 3 kinds of sincerity there are the noble high virtue in response to righteous request, the fundamental duty in response to lawful right, and sincerity of the utterly faithful by thought, feelings and desires. There are of the data,25% data of thought, 40% data of feelings, and 35% data of desires that found by the script in The Vow movie directed by Michale Sucsy.

Abstract

The aims of the research are to identify the implementation of autonomous learning in teaching speaking for senior high school students in SMA N 3 Bantul and to find out the factors that influence lack of speaking. The research was conducted in descriptive qualitative methodology. The data findings were obtained from the observation, interview and documentation of senior high school students of SMA N 3 Bantul. The participants of the research were the students of X IPA 1 of SMA N 3 Bantul. The data was divided into four points as follows: 1) the characteristic of autonomous learner, 2) the work-cycle of autonomous learning class, 3) teacher-students’ role in autonomous learning, 4) the factors that influence lack of speaking performance of senior high school students. The results of the research were categorized into two aspects. First it is the characteristics of autonomous language learner namely having high motivation, strong curiosity, aware to use technology, having the high self-confidence. The work-cycle of autonomous classroom were plan, do, and evaluate. Teacher- learner role in autonomous class consisted of teacher as facilitator, teacher as motivator and teacher as the resource and responsibility for making good environment of autonomous class.  Second, it is the factors that influence lack of speaking performance namely incorrect pronunciation, low grammar comprehension, low vocabulary mastery, low motivation, less self-confident, nervous and speaking anxiety, and lack of language input.
